    Default Yeast Infection or Not?

To all you wonderful smart ladies out there...

I'm sorry to be so long winded and graphic but I think I might have a yeast infection and I was suppose to go to a club tonight to try to get a job. Now I'm all depressed because if I do have a YI then it's really not a good idea to go right?. I'm not sure I do though.

Here's the situation I'm in as I know it... Probably about 4-5 days ago me and my boyfriend had sex that night and then again the next morning using a latex lubricated condom ("Trojan Magnum XL" to be specific because the damn things don't say if they have spermicide or not or what they use for a lubricant!) and also "H2O" personal lubricant that contains glycerine which I've heard can trigger YI's.

We don't have sex like, all the time, maybe twice a week or so, but we've been together for awhile. We were particularly rough the first night and included oral favors so I was sore the next morning but we did it again anyway. The next day after the soreness and irritation went away I noticed my clitoris was very sensetive, almost inflamed, and kind of itchy. I always wash in the tub squatting under the water like a frog after sex and pee too to prevent UTI's so my first thought was okay I didn't wash very well.

I've been keeping extra clean the past two and a half days. I even bought feminine wipes (Summer's Eve because they were flushable and came in a small package) to use instead of the Charmin toilet paper that they have at work because that stuff leaves loads of lint on my kitty and drives me nuts.

The irritation has gone down immensly but there is still a hint of it if I go say half a day without cleaning my clit really well. I also noticed the past two days when I've been at the gym I have gotten a lot of vaginal discharge that is thick and white, I'd say about 1/4 of a teaspoon worth but that's the only time I really have had a discharge problem that I've noticed. When I got out of the tub today I was using a mirror to look at my kitty to make sure I'd shaved everything and when I open my kitty I can see some white discharge that concerns me. Other then my clit there is no itching or discomfort.

I'm flat broke... car has no gas in it and the electric bill is due today. Buying calcium pills which were $8.99 put me over my budget... We're going to make the bills but I have no money at the moment to go see a Gyno. I already have an appointment for June 14th for a birth control perscription renewal because this is the first month in 12 that I have been off the pill.

My mom said to douche with a vinegar and water mixture as she said that in the early stages this restores the PH or whatever and I should be fine . I've read the YI thread and the douching thread and this sounds like a bad idea to me but given my finances or lack therof what should I do? And this DOES mean that I have to wait to go and get a job right? Or should I still try?

    Sorry again for the rambling,
    -=Phoenix

Ive done the water and vinegar flush and it helps alot. Also, sticking a whole clove of garlic up there for 24hrs can make YI go away depending on how severe they are. Is there any odor?
You may also have bacterial vaginosis which you will need a RX to get rid of.
heres some info that may help you:

There isn't any odor to the discharge that I've noticed but I'm also keeping extra clean so might that have anything to do with it? Even when I stuck my finger in it to see it didn't smell.

If it is BV then can I still do the vinegar or garlic or will it just agrevate it? If it is BV then I'll have to wait until mid June to do anything about it... what happens then? Do I do the garlic or vinegar option?

By the way BV can be cause by other things than a partner for example wearing workout pants too tight. There may only be a fishy smell after sex..if so its most likely that. If you have anything like that you can contract PID going into your fallopian tubes causing infection from having BV. Vinegar flush can help the symptoms of BV but will only mask it.
If you dont have anything like that then yea vinegar flush and some garlic will clear it right up. Stop using those feminine wipes too they mess up the natural ph of your vagina and can make it worse. Stick to baby wipes instead unscented kind.

I think you should do both. If you're going to do the garlic, make sure you tie a clean piece of string around it. Like a tampon, easy to take out after. Cut the sides too.

I can switch to baby wipes, that's easy. I can do both the garlic AND the vinegar at the same time? I thought the garlic had to be whole... it won't be irritating if I cut the sides?

You messed up overcleaning and using Summer's Eve wipes. Those are probably scented and screwed up your ph even worse than it already was. A white thick discharge that looks like cottage cheese with itching indicates a yeast infection. Go to the drug or department store and get some Monistat seven day. The one or three day ordeals tend not to work as well. It shouldn't be more than 20 bucks. Refrain from sex while using Monistat as well because the medicine can injure a condom.

From a medical standpoint I wouldn't recommend putting anything else in your vagina except for a yeast infection medication. If their is a fishy odor and the discharge is gray instead of white than you could have BV instead and in that cause you will need an anti-fungal medication to get rid of it from the doc.

The problem is I'm not having any odor or itching. The discharge isn't normal for me, not as thick as it is and as much as I had in my panties when I worked out the past two days. Unless being off the pill this month is changing what I'm used to that much.

I had the same symptoms about a year ago though the clitoral itching was worse and treated myself with a one day monistat thing, which is the WORST experience I have ever gone through. My gyno saw me two weeks later and said that luckily I was right in my diagnosis and it was almost all gone. A week later to redo my tests and it was gone completely.

The pill tends to dry some women out down there and sex can do it too but you said you used lubricant. Now that you are off of the pill you may have more discharge. A had a friend who was convinced she had a yeast infection when she in fact did not, the doctor just told her she produced more discharge than some women do. I just stopped the pill myself a couple of months ago and I am more horney but sex doesn't dry me out as bad as it use to when I was on the pill. But then again we use condoms and lubricant. You could also have a latex allergy or allergy to certain lubricants. Spermicides can cause allergies as well. I would stick with KY or Astroglide lubs.

You shouldn't use any of the wipes other than maybe a baby wipe. That can irritate you body...especially if it was slightly irritated from sex. I would not suggest using any kind of a douche. Any good effects the vinegar can have are in most cases minimal compared to the amount of germs forced where they are not supposed to go. I would never treat a yeast infection until I knew for sure that the diagnosis was correct. Your body become immune to the medication if used to frequently. I have used the one day medication on two separate occasions and I got very quick and clean results. I am also a swimmer, and one semester I had to go from a swimming class straight to differential equations, and so I left the suit on because I didn't have time to change. I ended up with bacterial vaginosis. The discharge for BV was a uniform texture, and the discharge for a yeast infection is more of a cottage cheese texture. Also, as you said, you just got of bc, so your hormones may take a little while to level out, and don't forget that you don't want to over clean down there. You'll end up getting rid of the good bacteria that help you fight off any infection.

With garlic, do not cut the clove -- I have heard awful horror stories. Leave it whole, maybe press on it with your nail just slightly to let out a little more of the active chemicals, but no more than that. But it will help with infections whether yeast or bacterial: garlic kills a lot of different kinds of microbes.

I've actually had pretty good results with vinegar & water douches, and my mother said a doctor told her to use them once. It's not really a great strategy for a bad infection, just for resetting to normal PH.

I found a site when I searched Yahoo about yeast infections and that site said PLAIN yogurt was good for yeast infections. It said a good way to do it, w/o it getting real messy, was to take a plastic glove and put the yogurt in the fingers part only and then freeze it. then it's easy insert. I don't know how often you're supposed to insert the yogurtcicles or how many at a time, but if you just search yahoo or something, or go to webmd.com you can get a lot of info on both YIs and BV.

It could also be trichamodis (spelling?). Many things in common with yeast infection, often confused.

You should try to borrow some $$ and see the doc.

Maybe I'm a nerd but I would be scared to shove anything in my twat that wasn't a penis or something from the drugstore. The garlic thing makes me nervous.

If you are totally broke, call your county health department and see if they have a clinic. Most are free/low cost (based on your income). They should be able to test for yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis, trichimonis, and all other STDs. They should also have samples of meds for you if you need it. BV and trich are treated with flagyl...do not drink alcohol if you are on this med...will make you puke your guts out. A yeast infection can be treated with a one time oral pill that the doctor can prescribe.

you should definitely get it checked out be a dr. if at all possible. go to a free clinic if there's one near you.

if it is a y.i. then two things that will help are yogurt and tea tree oil. eating yogurt as well as applying it directly to the infection will help (use a syringe or coat a tampon). applying diluted tea tree oil (1 part oil to 10 parts water) will help as well.

but seeing a dr. is the best option.

I've Been Told By A Few Of My Doctor's To Never Douche As It Causes You To Rinse Away The Natural 'good' Bacteria Leaving You More Prone To Infection. Also Douching Can Lead To Getting Bacteria Vaginosis (again Because The Good Bacteria Is Gone). I Also Agree With Boxingdoc, The Best Thing I Think You Might Want To Do Is Go To One Of Those Free/low Cost Clinics And See If That Helps Or If You Have Some Plain Yogurt In The Fridge......suit Up....good Luck Ma!

Why don't you just get some Monistat? Its only about $12? Get the 3-day though, its cheaper and 10day doesn't always work. Also, they have the yeast infection pill at PlannedParenthood for less than $20, but they might want you to get the nurse to look at it. If it doesn't smell, its probably a yeast infection. Never use Trojans, they irritate the shit out of me, Durex and Lifestyles are much better. For some reason they get a bad rap but they are less drying, for me anyway.

You can also shove some yogurt up your cooch with a tampon applicator. I've never done that but I heard it is effective. Garlic....ouch ouch ouch, and stinky too! Fuck homeopathy, go with innovative 20 year old medicinal breakthrough, here, lol, ie Monistat or the other stuff like it....

If it itches and there is discharge, it can be either a yeast infection or BV...I have had both, but the reason I knew I had BV is because of the strong (sorta fishy) smell and with a YI, there is a thicker, cottage cheese-like discharge. The BV discharge is milky and greyish-white. The only way you can get rid of BV is to take antibiotics, but it should be treated ASAP so you don't develop PID.

If you think there is a chance you have BV, go to Planned Parenthood. You pay based on your income. If you don't make a lot, they will often treat you for free and give you free medication as well.

Is this a new sex partner?? A new penis can definitely bring on infections.

I have used the garlic treatment and that works. I just peel off the papery outside and break off the hard "stem" part at the end without puncturing the skin of the clove. Just put the whole thing up there...you don't need a string and definitely don't cut it. Put it in before bedtime and push it out with your vaginal muscles in the morning. The garlic can be a little strong smelling for the rest of the day, but just do it on a day when you're not stripping or having sex (unless you are dating an Italian boy - LOL -j/k).

Another way to help prevent YIs and keep the Ph of your vag normal and healthy is to take GSE (grapefruit seed extract) pills (NOT grapeseed)...they also sell it in liquid form and you just put a few drops in your drink every so often. Yogurt helps too. If you don't want to eat yogurt all the time, you can take acidophilus pills (which is the same stuff in yogurt).

Over-use of Monistat and other OTC yeast infection treatments can make you less responsive to the same treatments over time. For instance, if you get YIs all the time, it's best to see a doctor and get the YI pill or alternate with the use of garlic instead. I hear they aren't so good for you. I've used them frequently throughout the years and I try to avoid using them unless I absolutely can't help it.

NEVER use a spermicidal lubricant. I was told by a nurse in the STD clinic that scientists discovered that a nonoxynol-9 causes SORES and irritation on the walls of the vagina or rectum, thus making the chances of transmission of STDs (primarily HIV) greater. It's hard to find a spermicidal lubricant nowadays, but I am not sure if they are still making it. If you see that ingredient (nonoxynol-9) on the package of any lube or condom, DO NOT use it!
Plain old water based (for vaginal) or silicone based (for anal) lubes will do just fine. If you are using the condom correctly, they are very safe without the spermicide.
If you visit the Planned Parenthood and ask for condoms, they will most likely give you more than you will ever use in a lifetime...I have close to 75 or something just from a few visits to the doc.

Oh and for you ladies that use vinegar, do you use the clear white kind? I've never tried this and wonder what your results have been like. Do you dilute it with water 50/50?

    Ladies,

Thank you all for the great advice. I did end up doing the vinegar douche. I mixed one tablespoon with a quart of water. It didn't sting or anything and felt a bit strange. I haven't noticed a worsening or an improvement at all. I'm not going to do it again.

I called my Gyno that I'll be going to June 14th and they won't see me until I'm established as a new patient and the earliest time to do that is the date I already have. The Planned Parenthood at the Health Department here is booked until mid July.

I'm still getting the whitish grey, almost pearly, but even consistency of discharge. It's not thick or lumpy at all. It doesn't smell at all either. As long as I take a shower every day and don't use linty toilet paper then there isn't even any itching. If I wait and take a shower every other day though the itching comes back. I'm ust going to wait and go see the OB-GYN when I'm schedualed. It very well could be the difference between having birth control for 11 months and not this month.

    We'll see what happens.

On a side note: What do you ladies do about discharge when you're dancing or do you switch thongs so often during the night that it's not a problem? I guess the dim lights would hide it if there was any anyway. Not that the customer is really looking at your underwear.

    Hey there,
I just saw what was happening to you and had a very similar experience over the winter.. there was irritation, discharge and an itch that wouldn't quit. I ended up (after being checked many times for STDs because I freaked) using Monistat 3.. I used it one week, had a bit of an occurance the next, so used one more dose and have been fine ever since (knock on wood.)
Some way somehow I had become more susceptible to YI, and didn't even know what was happening. I also take a cranberry pill, they make them especially for UTI and are even more effecticve than cranberry juice. Although they are really for UTIs sometimes the cranberry juice touches elsewhere and is able to help heal.. Good luck!

p.s. I used the cream insertion Monistat, not the pill shaped things.. It works the same way, but I think helps a lot faster.. They also give you a cream to rub on the area that itches.

A lot of Planned Parenthood clinics have walk in hours.

I definitely do not recommend doing anything down there besides rinsing with water. Condoms lubed with spermicide give me YIs.

I use acidopholous tablets to naturally cure yeast.

And Kamryn, BV is bacterial vaginosis. It's as common as yeast but caused by an overabundance of bacteria.
