    Sad Getting fillings replaced (teeth)

Well, I just found out I need 3 fillings replaced (that are old), & the teeth need crowns. It will be $1500.00 & is not covered by my insurance. I spoke to the dental receptionist, they will put me on a plan, but? The dentist said the teeth (they are upper molars) could go anytime (get shattered), & then I'd need root canals . Things are not that great @ my job anyway, not sure how long I'll be there . My appt. is scheduled for this Tues . I also have to take a valium or two beforehand which means I'll have to take a cab to & from. There is a Univers. Dental school that does work on a sliding scale, (no appt. either you sit & wait 'til you're called) then I have to take time off work & go into city

I got some money from my mom's stock, and I'm using it for this myself--yuck...

Good luck on the ordeal, I'm not looking forward to mine.

yes, as much as it sucks, you have to get it done before you need root canals, which will happen when the decay spreads. And those are like $1500 per tooth.

If it makes you feel any better, I've spent about $6,000 on non-cosmetic dental work in the last couple years for cavities and root canals. UGH. I put it on carecredit (carecredit.com) which let me pay it off over a year with no interest.

I go to a town right across the Mexican border from Yuma AZ called Algodones for all of my dental work. The patients are ALL Americans, many retired, and it is ALWAYS busy. I have an EXCELLENT dentist there who did better work on my mouth (I had extensive work done) than the dentists I had previously used in Texas. I go there for all my dental work now. Many times I drive from the Upper Midwest directly there when it is time for my dental work.

The dentists all speak English and most live in the US border towns of Yuma, Calexico, or El Centro.

A root canal is $250, and crowns I believe are around $90. A regular cleaning is $30, and deep cleaning is $45. Fillings aren't much.

Based on what you said above, I would guesstimate you costs for this would be in the neighborhood of $600-$700.

you might want to get a second opinion. I say this because I was told the same thing and I went to another dentist and they said no. I am not saying this is the case with your situation, but there is a trend with dentist's who will tell you that your fillings are too old and need to be replaced, or you have OLD fillings and aren't good anymore... fillings do not go bad unless another part of the tooth that is not filled starts decaying around it. Get a second opinion before you do this. And you are right, insurance will not cover it because it is NOT a standard practice. Call up a different dentist, get a consult before you have any work done to replace your fillings.

I am not 100% sure what I paid for a crown, as I have had several of them, one
several months ago. I know it was not over $200 though, and when I lived in Houston about 4 years ago, I paid $400 for a crown.

My last dental bill was not much more than $400-$500, including a root canal.

^^ What Gynger said ^^ A second opinion might cost a few bucks and a few hours from work, but in the end, it COULD save you TONS of money. And the pain-in-the-ass.
