ARGH! I hope that my work profile doesn't get included in this "regulation" I couldn't read the article as the bandwidth had been exceeded on the server that article is located. Ah well.. there are plenty of other alternatives out there on the web if it does happen.

Then again, I do have a disclaimer in my profile as such.

EXCLUSIVE: TEEN HAVEN MYSPACE A PLATFORM FOR PORNSTAR PROMOTION
    By Tom Tapp
The biggest porn stars in the world are using NewsCorp's MySpace.com to promote themseleves, often to kids.

Much like enterprising bands that used MySpace to market themselves, dozens of the biggest XXX starlets are now using the site for the same reason. These include Jenna Jameson, Tera Patrick and Nikki Benz. Even porn industry trade publication Adult Video News has a page. Many, like Patrick's, have links to the stars' official sites offering explicit imagery, videos and sex toys. All are wildly popular with the kids who are MySpace's mainstay.

For example, The average MySpace user has 68 friends. Jameson has 406,571. Patrick has 56,688.

One 18-year-old high school girl from Kentucky who calls herself "Pornstar" writes today on Jameson's page:

"...you have no fucking clue how much i want to be a pornstar when i graduate.. ive only got 4 more days!! then i begin trying to start my career as a pornstar."

All of this poses myriad problems for MySpace and corporate overlord NewsCorp, which paid $580 million for the site recently. One quarter of the site's 75 million users are ages 13-17. Obviously parents, already concerned about the site's alleged pedophiles, won't be happy with this newest twist.

Among the other questions is how advertisers will react. While it's pulling $156 million in ad revenue yearly, MySpace has struggled to attract name brand revenue. Its porn star problems are a case in point why. Weight Watchers was featured at the top of Patrick's page. T Mobile was prominent on Jameson's. Neither probably wants to be associated with XXX content.

And then there's the problem of sorting such content from among the millions of pages on MySpace. The Wall Street Journal reports today on Photobucket, one company actively developing new methods of filtering for MySpace. But that's only so effective.

    Writes The Journal's Julia Angwin:

...even though the basic elements of these Web businesses are computerized, no one has worked out an effective technology fix for the porn problem. Some scanning software has a hard time distinguishing between pictures of nudes and apple pie, and certainly can't make the subtle judgment calls required of Photobucket's human censors. Naked breasts partly obscured with tape? OK! X-ray-like images of sexual acts? Delete!

I think it's interesting how they say 25% of the site's users are underaged because a lot of people set their profile to underage so it will be private if I'm not mistaken but they are actually adults.

We'll probably have to start paying to use the stupid site soon anyway, so oh well.

Funny, this article reads a lot like the typical scare story in the mainstream media about the Internet in general circa 1999.

Ah.. well.. isn't it thanks to porn that we have some of the great 'advances' in re: the internet or am I mis-lead..?? Regardless, if the person has net nanny or some such program on wouldn't it automatically block those pornstars' websites once the minor has clicked on the link for those websites ??

I have no idea how net nanny and similiar programs work as I ..well.. don't use them and find no need to use them

More hype isn't it typical ! Kids will be kids I was one once it was amazing how resourceful I was then . People haven't changed much its the way the word gets out . News stories that maybe took weeks to circulate through society now can take a couple of days maybe less to pass through the net .And not to mention all the BS stories out there . Parents just need to talk to their kids like always .Porn has been around for years I think the Romans started this out .

Notice how much more controversial MySpace has gotten since it was purchased by Fox NEWS Corp. It's always in the news and popular media now. How strange...
We all imagine ourselves the agents of our destiny, capable of determining our own fate. But have we truly any choice in when we rise, or when we fall, or does a force larger than ourselves bid us our direction. Is it evolution that takes us by the hand, does Science point our way, or is it God who intervenes keeping us safe.

So much struggle for meaning, for purpose. And in the end, we find it only in each other. Our shared experience of the fantastic. And the mundane. The simple human need to find a kindred, to connect. And to know in our hearts... that we are not alone.

I don't have a problem with designation of profiles as "Adult." It seems entirely appropriate to me.

You know, everything Myspace is going through now, AOL went through 10 years ago. The more things change, etc.

Myspace should add the ability to make one's profile private, and the ability to designate one's profile as adult only. That should take care of adult content on Myspace fairly handily.

Haha. Are you suggesting any publicity is good publicity? And therefore, may be staged to drum up hits?

Btw, when's the media mogul offer for StripperWeb coming in?

Also, if the cops and parents think MySpace is bad, wait until they find about the things kids are doing with their avatars over at IMVU.

Except the real meat of the article doesn't have to do with little kids losing their innocence. It has to do with *insert major company* being associated with strippers, escorts and porn stars.

So obviously if a profile gets designated adult, bam, almost all the major advertisers won't want their ad up. If they don't want the ad up, that profile doesn't make mypsace any money. So now myspace has to resort to seedier advertisers for those sections. And so the spiral goes....

The oroginal article sounds more like 'sensationalism' than 'journalism'.

I just wish the religous right would shut up! In actual fact, society in general needs to loosen up a bit.

This sort of issue does keep popping up, over and over again...

BTW: Better filtering is a good idea, as stated earlier.

I don't think really it's a MySpace problem. Parents should be aware of what their kids see on the net. It's the parents responsibility, not MySpace.

I just started a Myspace page a few weeks ago, and my parents dont seem to have a problem with it.

I am far to impatient with myspace.com - it takes forever for those pages to load up.

Its parental responsibility. And from what Ive seen from models and actresses on myspace they mostly use it to talk to their friends and family.

I think myspace is a great thing for alot of people, just not for me right now. But it does allow alot of interests to flourish and network.

And who wouldnt want Tom for a friend.

Gee, parents are shocked that kids are using computers to explore their sexuality?

Its just an indication that they want to outside the influence of their parents. A difficult issue that I dealt with with an ex and teenage daughter. My ex insisted she demonize porn with her daughter. I preferred to politely laugh about it in an attempt to marginalize it's impact on the girl.

The last thing you want is to have your kids feel shameful about their sexuality.
