    Default to mohawk or not

hi! I have a question. I have a mohawk... well. I did have a mohawk. I just recently got extensions to make it look like I didnt. after I did that I got a job at a strip club here in town. my hair looks good but I dont really like it and they kinda still hurt. im afraid to take them out because custs might not like it and I might lose money. what do you guys think. do you think I will lose money by having a mohawk?

depends on the club. some clubs (i assume especially gown glubs) you would notice a decrease in earnings. but if your in the right club and your customer base is ok with alternative looking dancers, then you might as well be comfortable.

remember a mohawk is a niche hairstyle, more guys will dislike it then those that like it.

I have a 'faux-hawk' which it sounds like you have (about four and a half inches wide) and I've actually been making more cash since I nixed the extensions! YMMV, it will depend on the club and everything. I wear mine with brightly colored schoolgirl barettes and it seems to get me good attention.

    Thanks for sharing your story.

I'll admit that a mohawk is more controversial. You need a real strong attitude to pull it off. If you can, you'd be the center of attention.

(opinion from a somewhat aged late 80's punker who sported a mohawk in the days)

I wonder what popular artists are associated with the mohawk style? In my day, it was TSOL, Black Flag, the Ramones to a lesser extent, with the Clash being the cross-over band who mixed with ska to make punk popular.

I work with a girl that has one. She does seem to make some money, but I always see her with young guys. I think she alienates herself from older guys. I've heard them ask her about it. They don't quite get it.

no offense but the majority of guys i've come across aren't turned on by short hair... most males prefer women with medium length to long hair.

I danced with a 'hawk for a few months before I got my extensions too. Men really seemed to like it, but I couldn't get all types because a lot of them really like longer hair. The mohawk was all damaged from me bleaching it too, so I opted for the extensions to hide some of the damage.
I live in Hollywood, so most of the ones that were into it were younger musicians. I'd get some older dudes too, but that was somewhat rare.
My opinion: DON'T take the extensions out. You'll make more with the long hair overall, but it's hard for me to tell if I made more with or without it because I was such a shitty hustler when I had the mohawk. LOL
I work with a girl who has one and she makes great tips, but she is also an incredible stage performer. She rarely hustles because she knows she will make enough money on stage. But the guys who do buy dances from her are absolutely crazy over her and she ends up doing several at a time.

Those who appreciate it will treat you well, but you have to be thick - skinned and "punk rock" enough to handle guys being jerks about your hair.

I do pretty well with older guys, actually, but then it's a fairly wide mohawk.

Here are two pictures, one with my hair grown a little longer than it is usually, the other shorter than it is usually. You can just see the shaved sides a little bit the way I normally wear it -- mostly pinned back with barettes, little strands hanging out in front.

And yes -- I have, as azcustomer says, a really strong attitude! So that's just me and my hustle, and may not apply to everyone else. Much of the information one can give and get about this industry is awfully subjective.

so I have decided to get them removed today. im going to play up the mohawk and put on a strong additude. its more me anyways. I feel a little weird with the long hair and I think its coming out when I dance. im just not myself anymore and I dont want to keep dancing if I have to totally change who I am. I will let you guys know how it goes this week.

Have you thought about a wig for work? Then you can have a variety to choose from and your own hair as well.

When I'm in the club, I'm working.

    Bottom line.

So if a guy want's a mysterious girl, I'm vague and seductive. If he want's a giggle-girl barbie type, that's me. Learn to read what the guys want (pay attention to body lang. and slight comments). I can be anyone he wants, and I'm pretty good at knowing who he wants.

It helps that I'm a theatre major, perhaps, but once you can do this so comfortably that custys don't know you're acting/lying/thinking he's a moron, you'll see a major increase in money.

Since a successful hustler (making major $$$) is acting, at least a little bit (don't go overboard), your hair/clothing ect. are a part of that.

Which role do you want to play, and who are you performing for?

I'm interested in if you make less or have to work harder w/out extensions. It's like an experiment. I'ld also ask your management what they think before you do it, esp. if you're in a higher class or gown club.

    That said, good luck!

    it is an experiment huh!
hmmm.. I didnt even think that I should ask management but that is a good idea. they just sent 2 dancers home the last time I worked for being overweight... which they were not really... I really should ask to make sure they would not fire me.

    Hey good luck with it!!!
When I had my mohawk (which was a good 20 years ago) people loved it. This was long before I started stripping but I got far more positive reactions to it than negative ones from all types of people. One thing - mohawks are certainly great for getting attention (-:

I second what keira said. Wigs are great, temporary, they help differentiate work persona from the rest of you, and while some of them are highly realistic and some aren't (look for something that accentuates your own face and neck/shoulders) I've been surprised before by the number of compliments I've gotten on "your hair", in inexpensive wigs I've thought were totally obvious. :-)
