    Default Gods Damned Hair...

OK so.... several things, and I need as much research help as I can get here.

    1) Anyone here been to a cosmetology school to get their hair done? I am dire need of a trim and a color and I am SO poor. Any good stories? Horror stories? Is it a 50/50 chance for me to do this?

    2) Ok this is where I need lots of help. I want to play with my hair. I dont want to cut it short again, or get bangs, or a perm. Nothing permanent or VERY long lasting. Stuff I can do at home. Its getting kinda close to my waiste, with a few bits in the front that are slightly shorter due to breakage back when I had stripes.

Now its VERY thin and hates to stay in place for ANYTHING. I am SO Scared of over productifying it by using tons of hair spray and such... but I wanna try something with this hair.... dunno wot! Maybe some curls? I dont really like layers on me but if it will help.... I dunno. Here's some celeb hair I like... but I dunno if it can be pulled off with such thin hair.

I dunno! Keep it straight but find a way to make it fuller? Add some waves? Some curl?

    *woe* *angst*

    Help?

And yes, I am keeping it long and Black No. 1

If you're going to look for a cosmetology school to get you hair cut, look for one that's more high end. You don't want to go to a cosmetology school where they place their people in Super Cuts or Professionl Hair type places you find in malls. I go to high end Spa/Salon here in NJ that runs their own school and the students their are top notch, I'll run into see them for trims in between regular cuts. I also like the Zeta-Jones style. I think it would look fabulous on you!

A cut can only do so much. You have to use heating tools to style in the majority of cases. Most of the photos that you posted appeared to have used about a 1 inch curling iron. You mentioned being a bit spent, so check out your local SALLy store if you have one. They carry a good line of curling irons that are fantastic. They are only about 6 bucks, and they are strong enough that african american women love them. They also carry some great products to keep the tools from burning your hair, and they are at reasonable prices. Another thing I love to do is use the conditioners from at home coloring kits. They are realitively cheap, and they give your hair a beautiful healthy shine even if you tend to have more dull hair from over styled hair. Basically your best bets will be from the products that you use to care for the over productifyed hair. Also....for a good cut in places that you are a bit nervous about, always bring in photos of your hair in different styles so that you can help the person to get a feel for your hair, and bring in photos that you like. They can usually tell you what is reasonable for you to attempt, and this way you don't get a bad cut off the assumption that your hair works a certain way. I've gotten FANTASTIC cuts from cheap places this way. Most of the cuts you pointed out will need long layers, and I would suggest a "swoop" bang. That way you don't have the full out 80s bangs or anything...I just think that a swoop band would fit your face shape well.

yeah, just about all of those pics are long layered cuts. I feel your angst I also have long, thin/fine hair. I keep mine in long layers it helps your hair appear fuller by not being weighted down. Make sure you specify how long you want your shortest layer to be...I usually request my shortest layer (my face framing layers) to be no shorter than chin length. The sides are graduated.

Blowdrying also helps my hair look thicker and gives it swing. I used to use an extremely large round brush but have recently started using a paddle brush and I like it much better, it's easier for me to work with.

Large velcro rollers are great for providing lift at the crown and giving that extra "oompf." You can mix up the sizes for a bit of wave.

it looks like most of the women in the pics. have long layers which were then curled with a lrg. curling iron as noted above.

I go to a high end beauty school and yes you can get GREAT results from going to one, but ask for a 'senior', or somebody who is about to graduate. You can get a great cut from a newbie on the floor (which is what I am) but I know sooooome of the girls in my class are dumbstruck when faced with a client lol. So its better to be safe than sorry! As far as the styles, yeah you are going to need to invest in a good curling iron and some good product. Also what kind of shampoo/conditioner do you use now? It could be weighing your hair down... Pantene is what most people use and its HORRIBLE. Tresemme too.
I dunno, you can ask me questions if you want about techniques or whatever because I could ramble on forever on this subject haha

What about a perm for more body? Not a nasty 80's spiral perm! But something to give more body.

And get some layers cut, will give you more body too.

The good news- what you want is not so difficult. The bad news: no one will dazzle you for under $100. (Kinda like being in a strip club. LOL)

You should have a minimal trim, and then use braid-styling & falls for flair....If you have thin hair, you can use sponge/ steam curlers for minimal wear & tear.

(^ A couple lessons from owning a JewFro mop of hair. LOL)

Hey Paige you can buy clip in extensions which are great especially for work. Just buy the hair and sew the clips on yourself, you can make wide layers to give more volume to your own hair or make small ones a few inches wide and these can be different colours to jazz up your hair for work but without ruining your real hair with bleach and colour. Shops that cater for African American hair are good places to find hair extensions. Hope this helps xx.

I used to use Pantene. Meh. Now I use Redken when I can afford it... if I am SUPER broke, I have some leftover Pantene... but I try hard not to use it.

What about making big pin curls? I hate using much heat or product on my hair, and it's what I do. You want to take your hair when it's completely wet and well conditioned and maybe use just a tiny bit of gell. Wrap it around something big (like a roller) in little sections and then bobby pin it to your head. Go to sleep and in the morning you'll have curls that'll last all day.

Is your hair black or dark dark brown? I have the falls and stuff I'm going to send you in a bag but I also have some loose dark brown hair that maybe you could make falls out of if it matches your hair. I dunno, I'm really bad with that stuff which is why I'm giving all my hair away! I know you can always benefit from just a trim though if you haven't had one in a while. My hair is long and thin and seems to matt up more when I haven't trimmed it for a while.

There are certain cuts that can make long thin hair look fuller while keeping the length .....there is a way that they can razor it in subtle layers that looks great. don't laugh, but I saw it on What Not to Wear on TLC (or some other show like that). The girl had hair just like yours, and she wanted to keep the length. I think they took off like 2 inches at the most and it looked completely different.

My salon hosts cosmetology students to come in and work every so often and it's really inexpensive, compared to the regular prices. The owner is a family friend and I know she carefully selects the girls that come in for this. Maybe you could call around and see if there's anything like that.

I think your hair looks fine.I would just get a trim with a little layers and roll ends on big curling iron if you want a small change. My hair looks kind of like yours but longer.I let my husband cut mine.I have never been to a salon so cant give you advice on a school salon.

Its naturally dark brown. If I dye it, I usually go black.
