    Default What's Your Day Job?

Please move this topic if necessary. Well, since it has been extremely slow in the city I work (i.e. took home $18 Tuesday and $11 yesterday), I am going to have to get a day job. I have a degree, but hate the field I would be working in. So, I was just wondering what you all do for a day job.... do you work 5 days a week.... and how do you handle working two jobs (I'm afraid I'd be tired all the time)?

I go to school. It doesn't pay very well... yet... But it's still a pain in the ass. When school's in session, I just work weekends. I can't handle school and work in the same day.
If you think school is hard, try being stupid.

I too have a degree...I got my B.A. in math last December...but I never had much luck finding a job so I kept with dancing as my "safety net" for a while. After all, the very reason that I even started dancing was because no one else would hire me to the point that my bills caught up to me and I became totally desperate for a way to survive/pay bills. I do daytime work for politics, but it's more of a way to network and tell employers what skills I employ, than a paycheck. Now though, a lot of aspects of customers/dancing are getting on my nerves, so I realize that I need to start looking for a full-time job. That, and I really think that landing a full-time job might boost my self-confidence a lot. I generally have pretty good confidence, with the EXCEPTION of how worthy I view myself as a good job candidate. Tons of past brutal job rejections have kinda "convinced" myself that I'm just too inexperienced and not what anyone wants, and actually have lowered my confidence, at least in the job sector. It's also hard because customers will ask me "what I do" and if I'm in school, and when I tell them that I got my degree, they usually say in a mocking, sing-songy way, "And now you're here" and it really burns me up(these are usually also the customers who are cheap).

i work(ed) at davids bridal, im in my 2 week notice now. they were giving me no hours to begin with so thats actually what got me started dancing. and i go to school. i go to school 2 days a week, just cause the commute is crazy, so i take all my classes in those 2 days. i try to keep it to one thing a day as well. itll be alot harder to get one full day off, but youll have alot more time to yourself throughout the day so it wont feel as bad. depending on what job you want youll be working different hours. i worked retail so anytime i had work i knew it would be between 11am and 9pm, other corporate jobs might be 9-5 stuff like that

I am currently in school. Work as a professional and I do well. However, I have been bouncing in and out of working to pay unexpected expenses and to pay off my student loans....

i danced and had a day job once. i wanted to kill myself. my day job payed me every two weeks and the guy who ran it (he wanted ME to run it so he could fuck around...thats a loooong story) tried to under pay me and i had to dance four nights a week while i worked days on top of that. i had on average four hours of sleep each day, and he kept asking me to work weekends. every time he did that i'd pick up something sharp and ask him if he was sure because he knew i had to work nights. it was very stressful for me and unless you have a day job that pays enough to only dance when you want to or is understanding enough to let you have some time off, don't do it. if you need money consider changing clubs, or job hunt till you find something to replace dancing. just be very careful with having two jobs. it is never wise to burn the candle at both ends. i hope this goes well for you.

I'm in school part time and work at a used bookstore part time. Neither pays well, but they keep me sane

Other than the money, this would be my favorite place to work--I love used bookstores, especially well-stocked ones, which are more fun than barnes & Nobles (and I do love B & N). It's always the first thing I do when moving to a new city, go find them.

My 'day' job, which I have sadly neglected in the last six months, is doing architectural illustration and site planning. I got burned out on it, which was why I got into SC DJing, but it's definitely time to jump back into it--there's a lot of building going on around here.

^^ I totally agree - if the money was better, I'd probably still be working at a bookstore. What fun! My stint was at the Century City mall in LA: free new-release checkout program AND celebrity sightings! Whee!

My background is actually in classical dance; grew up on ballet, got my BFA in dance, spent over a decade as a modern dancer in various little pickup companies. Naturally, in my first two weeks as an exotic dancer I made more money than I made in my entire LIFE as a, um, regular dancer. No exaggeration.

My day job, though, after years of retail and temping and waitressing (worst job ever, for me - I just don't have the knack for it) and bartending, etc., is as a licensed massage therapist. I let this slip exactly ONCE at the club, on my very first night, and swore to myself I'd never let it happen again - I just don't want any crossover in either direction. I picked a 45 minute commute to the strip club in order to keep my superhero identity secret. No clients in the club, no customers in the office (and yes, it's definitely and obviously a legit office and not a 'parlor').

Funny how I run into the same problem in both locations, though. No, sorry, NOBODY gets a "happy ending"!

I've had day jobs ranging from therapeutic support (good because the hours are flexible, intense emotionally tho), to working at a women's shelter, to having a dog training business, to selling life insurance (that was awful).

I agree with the person who said travel is a good option. It definitely is, and I'm doing it most of the time now.

    I believe you...

Every single time I have worked with a dancer with a serious dance background or any kind of extended training, it shows--much to their advantage!

I have a small ebay store, and that earns me about $1000.00 (net) of extra money every month. I also sell X-rated items on ebanned, but don't have anything listed right now.

I am also involved in construction. I was building a fence today (I've been dying to use the little fencing smilies for weeks now). I'm also working on building new house for speculation. Looks like we break ground in July. I thought I would have to wait until August, and I am very glad that it is sooner.

I travel when I dance, so I schedule myself a week at a time, and I take my lap top with me to manage my auctions and the HUGE amount of paperwork involved in new residential construction. Construction can be a very flexible business to work around other schedules. I can usually fib about the progress of a project, or control the time frame by applying for permits with the 3+ week delay in mind.

And lastly, the agency that I've worked for doing bachelor parties sine 1998 has hired me in an administrative role-I answer phones. They are very flexible with my schedule, and totally understanding about the fact that I still need to dance in clubs.

Promote yourself and earn more money! This is a business that is owned by strippers for strippers. Let's make that money!

First and fore most i'm a mom of three.

I also work a freelance artist (mainly Graphic only because Fine art doesn't pay the bills as well) www.theartofsilena.net I make my own hours and can almost always work from home.

I also model on and off, fine art nudes mainly. Once again I make my own hours.

    Stripping is third.

All three let me work my hours around my family which I love.

To which you should reply, "yes - and paying it off much faster than if I were working entry level in my field." The "and now you're here" bull$hit is just a means to try to tear down your self esteem. You could also say, "mmm hmm, and why are YOU here?" (Perhaps because you're too much of a douche to maintain a relationship?) Not that all s.c. patrons apply, but the majority that offer disparaging conversation are battling their own demons...

    You are adorable. Period.

I currently don't have a day job, but I say that I do as it's a conversation point that I know a lot about and can regale them with. Frankly, I draw, read, poke around on the computer, masturbate, and otherwise enjoy my life. If anyone sees fit to pay me for that I'll stop buying these stupid powerball tickets.

when i first started dancing i was also working as a pre-school teacher, teaching after school science classes And training horses. man, that was an exhausting month. the guys at the club loved the whole pre-school teacher thing though...heh
