Default i love my club owner, but...

last night was Such a slow night...day after memorial day and what not.

there were maybe 5 guys in the club. no one tipping stage sets, few buying dances, even fewer tipping decently for the dances they did buy. Except, one regular who is an older guy and Loves to hear what he calls "blue eyed soul." (righteous brothers, elvis, etc.)

if i play the music he likes he tips me at least $10-20 a song on stage. but the club owner hates it when we play this music and won't let us do much of it.

i can understand this if the club is crowded with younger guys who like the top 40, but, under circumstances like last night's, it irritates me. if the girls have a legal and classy way to improve earnings on a bad night, i think it is unwise for the owner to not allow it. not to mention the fact that this guy is a good regular who tips well, buys a Lot of drinks for himself and the girls and is always respectful and pleasant. why not let him enjoy himself if he's the only decent customer in the club?!?

    am i wrong about this?

You're not wrong, but neither is he. You're looking at your own bottom line, and we all should do that, but the music in the club can affect EVERYONE'S bottom line. Yes, that regular may be the only decent customer in the club at that time. If you put on music that kills the room, you have also killed any potential for the other customers to spend. In addition, if new customers come to the door, they may not even make it past the door girl before hearing that music and deciding to leave, thus taking their money with them. The musical formats in strip clubs are designed to keep the mass of the customers spending. Unfortunately, slower music makes people too relaxed and sleepy and can really kill the mood to get dances, tip on stage, or even stay out on the town!

^^ yep yep, my club does not allow any hip hop, unless you want to pay $25 per song.. I think it kept the club upbeat, but I think it also welcomed a lot of the drug dealers (regardless of race) that would sit around, sell to the girls and rarely spend anything. So, now we have a very regulated song system, it gets irritating sometimes, but not much we can do about it.
Please don't lick me, it tickles..

Glamazon - the music he likes isn't necessarily slow. just old. and most of the customers we get on week nights are older anyway. i'd say the average age of our customers last night was in the late 50's. true, some older guys like current rap and alternative, but a lot of them like the old stuff. plus older songs can be really sexy to dance to. much sexier than what i often here at work. And i get complaints about the music being too hard and fast every single shift.

Was the owner in a bad mood that night or something? I had a customer like that once... I don't remember what he liked... But I remember it was really horrible and hard to dance to. Still, it was only a set and if people didn't like it, they would probably be able to deal with it for that long. I think he tipped the DJ a $20 to play it and the girl something, too.

I would happily play older stuff, as long as it wasn't like...."Unchained Melody" or something. Then again, I play Elvis on a fairly regular basis anyway. If it's upbeat and so on, I certainly see no point in mixing it up and keeping the custie happy, particularly if it's dead. Music rules are often good ideas, but all rules are meant to be broken from time to time. There are plenty of uptempo groovy old "blue eyed soul" type songs that should be allowed, IMHO. But hey....he IS the club owner. Maybe try to discuss it with him and explain yourself a bit?

Explain to him that hey, with Taylor Hicks winning American Idol*, this is the latest craze! SOUL PATROOOOOL!

*Disclaimer: I do not now and have never watched American Idol. I am only privy to such cultural phenomena through osmosis. Indie cred intact.
