    Default Bikram yoga newbie

Survived my second class last night. There were about 25 women and 3 guys. I think I was the only straight fellow. One of the men--shirtless, tattooed, spandex bottoms--took a matt next to me--doh!. He was, I think, checking me out during the class. Now I know how chicks feel.

In fairness, I was happily watching the young woman in front of me, who was both gorgeous (petite, very curvy, great body) and limber as hell. I'm guessing she comes from a circus family. It was very impressive.

Anyhow, it was a great workout/show.

Any other people here take yoga? I think it nicely compliments the aerobic things I do--mostly inline skating.

The sweating is sort of liberating, actually. Not to mention it feels fantastic when you get to stop & leave the room.

Its definitely hard the 1st few times. Youll want to leave the room and die b/c its so damn hot in there. Just bring a giant jug o' water and clothes that dont want to slip off. Its good for sweating out toxins. I drink some Kombucha before and a boat load of water too.
If anyone is here and likes it there is this place near downtown SD and is right off the 5 before the airport that charges $15/session for people under 25.

My friend has been doing it for years, and she swears by it. She's got one of the best asses I've seen, so I reckon it works She likes the sweating - one of those sweat masochists. Says the warmth helps loosen you up and allows you to stretch more. Very limber...

Gotta ask, TM: Why is the price tied to age? I wonder if that's even legal.

I never did Bikram Yoga...but I did do Ashtanga...but I can't anymore because they make the room so hot.

I love yoga. I can't do Pilates because my physio said I have to wait until my back's stronger (if those moves aren't done in exact form, it'll hurt a weak back). But yoga is genius. I never feel back pain anymore, if I keep up with it. It's toned me like crazy too. And a year ago I probably couldn't have touched my toes. I am naturally tin-man unbendy, but now i can do the splits! (one way at least)

Years and years ago---20, to be exact--I did karate and was able to do all the flexibility routines, including putting my palms down on the floor with my knees locked! Let's say I have a way to go to get back to this lovely, liquid, limber state. Sigh. Work in progress.

^^CE Im not sure why they price differently for different ages? Maybe the older you get the more chance you have of injury?

With age comes not only a greater chance of injury but wisdom and, in my case, a kind of irresistable, Sean Connery sexiness. So I'm Ok with that. <G>

I really enjoy yoga, but love pilates. I take about 3 pilates classes a week, and one yoga class. My balance sucks, so it's pretty funny to watch me try to balance in yoga!

However, I've only been to two Bikram classes, and it was enough to know it's not for me. I don't like to get all hot and sweaty (unless under the right circumstances!), so traditional yoga is more my thing...

Both yoga and pilates are a terrific compliment to weight training and cardio!

Remember to breathe through your nose in Bikram! It really, really helps to keep you from overheating too much...

Love Pilates too, it's actually very good for rehabilation (for the person who said they have a bad back), it was actually created as one of the first forms of physical therapy.

I find it amusing you were grossed out by a man checking you out and it made you know how women felt... so you did it to a woman.

    Learn your lesson, boy. -.-

Completed my 3rd class on Saturday morning. Did well. Better than the young lady I brought along. She nearly passed out in the heat. <g> Meantime, I'm feeling more confident and capable about the positions. Seems to be helping my overal mood, too. Sunday skating went nicely too, although this may have more to do with some wheel/bearings maintainance I finally got around to doing.

I did Bikram once. I love yoga, but I didn't like how I couldn't hold on to the appropriate body parts because I was too slippery. I also didn't like how the instructor reminded me of a drill sgt, rather than a calming yogi. That weirded me out. The heat wasn't so bad...it actually reminded me a little of helping bail hay in the summer back on the farm when I was a kid. I may try it again. There's a place in Montreal that charges 20 for unlimited classes, bottled water, and mat rental for your first week. Smart on their behalf, since most people run sweatily screaming after their first try.

There is a bikram place literally 2 minutes away from my house! I was going to go this morning - but I think I drank too much wine last night...

Booze the night before or coffee the morning of are definite no-no's, as is a big ol' breakfast. I plan to have a banana & water before the class tomorrow.

Bikram is my shit!!! Get through two weeks and you'll feel amazing, let alone the whole six days a week for two months... it'll change your life crap. Not that it's crap; it's true. But it's funny how they say that during every class.

Chicago, how do you feel about Utrasana, or the Camel pose? It's my favorite. Drugs for adults. I've never gotten a head rush like that in my life before bikram.

As for the sweating, I love it. I'm one of those cold blooded people and it just feels good.

Red, can't do the intense backward stretches--yet. I've always had an iffy lower back, so I'm taking it slowly. That said, finished my 4th or 5th class this Sat. morning and really enjoyed getting through it! I may go back one night this week, in fact. Like you, I don't mind the sweating at all. I LOVE the shower afterward, too. Good Gowd that feels great. If only they were co-ed! But I am getting ahead of myself.

I've signed up for three months unlimited. Have started going 2X a week, and this week may go 3X. Still not "fun" but definitely interesting, challenging and visually stimulating (the ratio of women to men in the class is 80/20).

As with any fitness instruction, be careful. Incidentally, several Bikram Yoga centers have been closed in my area due to inappropriate conduct (i.e. knowingly allowing ppl with heart issues to practice without proper supervision and also- the room is so warm, some were closed for health violations because germs, fungi, etc breed readily in the warm environment, and they were not cleaning their sweaty floors often enough). If the floor is not thoroughly mopped between classes, I would not go to the studio. That said, I'm weird that way.

I love yoga, and I love my instructor. I'm totally unflexible, so she is very good about giving modifications to each pose for ppl with heart issues, knee issues, back issues, etc... I'd be wary of instructos that do not prompt and show modifications to each pose for those that are less flexible, or those with injuries/health problems.

I've often considered yoga/pilates, have not made it beyond that stage though. I think if I want a sauna though, I'll just go and get a sauna. I don't enjoy too much sweat myself. Although a sauna can be fun with os company, as long as you don't dehydrate too much and keep track of time.

I think I just have to motivate myself to get off my coffee drinking bum and do my old takewando warm ups.
