    Exclamation Drinking problem at work

Okay, I'm kind of embarrassed to admit this on here because most of the dancers on here seem to totally have their shit together, but over the past couple of years, I've developed a huge drinking problem at work. I don't think I'm an alcoholic because I definitely don't drink every day-I only drink outside of work about twice a month. But I definitely have a huge problem at work. I've gotten fired because of my drunkenness (I was eventually allowed to come back, but still), pissed off other dancers, passed out in the dressing room, and not remembered stuff I did because I was too drunk.

I've tried completely quitting drinking at work, but that only lasted for a couple of days because I have to work 10, 11, or even 12 hour shifts at most clubs and the night would drag on sooooo slowly when I was totally sober. I definitely make way more money when I have a slight buzz going than when I'm totally sober, but a lot of times I don't know when to stop and I end up getting totally smashed instead of just buzzed. I don't need to drink to do my job, but I make more money when I drink and the night goes by so much faster after I've had a few. Plus I'm naturally a pretty shy person, but I'm much more bubbly and sociable with customers after I've had a couple. A couple customers who have seen me both completely sober and tipsy have even told me that I'm more fun to be around when I drink.

I guess what I'm looking for is advice on cutting back on my drinking at work. I've tried completely quitting, but I don't know if that's realistic for me. It's especially hard when I see all the girls around me doing shots. Thanks in advance for any advice you have to offer.

Well i had a slight drinking problem, only it was outside of work. I would not drink a lot of days during the week, but when i did...i did not always stick to my limit. When i go to the bars now, i always have a glass of water in between each drink. My problem was that i would just down drink after drink...having the glass of water forces ya to slow down. This has helped me alot, it could work for you. I now am able to have the nice friendly drunk "light" buzz in which you are referring to. It also helps hydrate ya and mininimize the dry ugly skin feeling that ya sometimes get the day after drinking. Now i am even switching to light liqour in glasses of water,,,so sticking to the liqour that is not "hard" can help ya too. Good luck!

Oh yea one more think ya mentioned shots! Try to just quit the shots, it is not hard i did it too. A little liqour in a cup of water and ice is way safer. Any time i ever had a bad night it was bc of those damn shots! When i am drinking the liqour in water, i always tell myself how this is better for me, and how i am gonna be a nice "fun" drunk tonight. It works!

Absolutely agree on the water. And don't forget to keep track of how many drinks you are having! I know that sounds like obvious advice but it is really, really easy to lose count. I keep track by paying for my drinks out of a separate stack than the cash I use for other things but that might not work if you have customers buying you drinks, etc

Silky speaks the truth. As a customer I enjoy a cocktail or four when I'm at the club, but I prefer the light buzz to being plastered. I almost always order a cocktail with a water back...that way, a) it's like ordering twice as many beverages since the water is usually gratis; b) I always have a beverage in front of me so I can space out my orders; and c) spreading out my drink orders means I can party longer, which means more dances

So blondhottie, that might be something to try, if your club doesn't charge for water.

Another good way to count drinks is with straws. If you are drinking mixed drinks they usually come with straws. Just tuck the straws in your purse and don't count them the next day. You'll be flabbergasted and maybe even a little disgusted with yourself if you empty 17 straws from your purse the next morning (and hung over).

You might think you are making more money when you drink, but I've noticed really drunk girls not keeping track of time and spending too much time with a customer who isn't spending, just buying drinks.

I quit in December and I hope for good this time . It has been difficult on many occasions but I made it through and the clouds and fog are starting to clear . You just need to really look into yourself and realize you just created a thread that kind of spells it out " Drinking Problem " . You must want to take the first step and reading into this you have had problems in the past ( cost you your job ) whats it going to be next ? I wouldn't say anything to you if I didn't care about the outcome .

I used to drink a lot at work, but I don't anymore. Here are just a few suggestions if you can't quick cold turkey. 1. Either drink beer or diluted cocktails instead of hard liquor. 2. Just make a target of drinking less each time you come into work. So hopefully if you cant stop all together you could have a few drinks through the night to maintain your buzz.

Just becareful getting drunk and driving home.

I've had a similar problem. Drinking a glass of water per drink is excellent advice. Another suggestion, if you take you own alcohol, is to take only a certain amount and not accept any from other girls. This obviously wouldn't work in the clubs that serve alcohol, though.

Thanks for the advice everyone! I think I'm going to try to drink a glass of water in between every drink and quit doing shots-almost every time I've been trashed, it's from drinking way too many shots.

And Paris, I'm sad to say that on nights I've been too wasted, I didn't have 17 drinks, it was more like 30 or 40 (drinks and shots combined). Granted, most clubs around here pay drink commissions to the dancers (anywhere from $1 to $3 per drink, more if you sell a bottle of champagne) and the dancer's drinks are usually smaller than the customers' drinks, but still, that's a shitload of drinks. I once did 14 shots of Goldschlager in 5 hours. I was shit-faced, but didn't even puke that day or the next day. That's how high my tolerance has gotten from drinking way too much at work.

Lots of good advice here; please keep it coming!

The most beautiful girl at my club thinks she makes more money when she drinks. What actually happens is that she dances and drinks for about two hours, and then spends the rest of the night completely unconscious on the floor in the dressing room. It's a nude club so there's not supposed to be alcohol, but she brings in vodka and drinks it out of a cup like icewater. On a typical night she'll put away a full-sized bottle of vodka by herself. It's really sad, because this girl is absolutely, perfectly, stunningly beautiful and really friendly too; she could be making a thousand dollars a night. But instead she spends the busiest part of the night lying passed out on the floor.

    Don't be that chick.

Also with the water, i would make sure it was a tall glass with a good amount in it. When i first started doing this, i would end up swigging some little cup of water just as fast as i would swig my alcoholic drinks!...That did not help at all, and i ended up forgetting the water after a few drinks. It really is all about pacing yourself. Seriously, my friend told me i needed to just stop drinking altogether...but it has been a year (and a lot of nights out) and i have done great pacing myself.
The trick is to take your time while you are drinking the water...in order to allow an actual "rest" period in between drinks. It becomes useless if you just swig a glass of water real fast and then continue with a new alcoholic drink. Try taking a walk around the bar with the water to give yourself that break time. The water trick seems so simple...but infact it takes just as much dedication as limiting your alcoholic drinks! Still, it will work when done right.
Yes, shots are the number one culprit..i feel that this is the type of thing that either a person can or can NOT handle. Even if you switched to shots that were not as strong...most likely it will just cause you to drink even more of them since they do not taste bad (thats what used to happen to me.)So, just make sure your careful with the drink that "tastes really good." They are just as dangerous.
Also, make sure you have something in your stomach such as a half of pretzel before work. This way, you still have something in your system to absorb the alcohol, wont get so drunk as quick, but it will not make you feel bloated or big before work.

Yekhefah, I'm surprised your club hasn't fired that girl yet! I HAVE been that girl on a couple occasions. Not every night, but a couple of times. It's embarrassing being a sloppy drunk and that's why I want to cut back.

Silky, thanks so much for that tip on drinking water really slowly! There have been occasions where I would drink water along with my drinks and I'd still get drunk, but I'd drink the water really quickly, so that's probably why it didn't help.

I have seen plenty of lovely women get messed up because of booze so you are so not alone. The fact that you sense a problem is a very good sign. I must disagree about just alternating water. Just don't drink at work. You don't need to put a band aid on this problem. You need and CAN solve it.

If you can't say no then you might want to remove yourself from the environment. Can you work at a no alcohol club? If not, maybe it is time to hang up the heels. No job, no amount of money is worth your health or well being.

If you still find yourself not able to say no to booze then it is time to hit AA. No need to be ashamed. AA helps alot of people.

A dancer friend developed a problem and decided to quit altogether. I was supportive. She was just uncomfortable in handling drink requests from customers, particular the ones who had known her for a while and bought drinks for her. I suggested that she say, "I can't drink alcohol - blood sugar problem." She thought it was brilliant. I think she used that from then on.

If you don't want to totally give up shots, you could just do shots that aren't as strong. I prefer doing shots, because that way you can move on to the next guy faster (if you get a drink, the guy usually wants you to sit with him while you drink that drink, but a shot you can do quickly and move on). I've been doing cherry bombs (redbull with a shot of cherry doctor) because they are really weak, but the customer still sees the alcohol being poured (if it's a customer that only will buy you a drink that has alcohol in it). I did a bunch of them tonight, and barely got a buzz (which is good, because I don't think I could work as well if I was drinking a lot, because I'm so used to not drinking at work. If you like having a little buzz at work, just do shots that aren't as strong, but space them out, like limit yourself to one shot every hour and the rest drinks.
Take the road less traveled- just make sure you have a map.

30? Ok that's pretty serious... I think you should at a minimum go cold turkey for 3 months.... if you are drinking 30 ounces of alcohol in a night, on a regular basis, you need to regain some perspective.... yes maybe you can drink again someday, I am not into the abstinence thing, but you need to regain control... it is hard for me to believe that you are in control if you are drinking 30 drinks in a night...

The last time I got too drunk at work, I made some rules for myself and stuck by them. I drink a ton of water at work and I bring a water bottle with only the amount of alcohol I'd allow myself to drink... and I make it gin or something hard (for me, at least) to drink straight. Just pay attention. If you work better a bit buzzed, then stop when you're a bit buzzed (like, at a couple drinks). If it's a matter of doing it because you don't want to look like a stick in the mud... the above posts all gave great advice on that.

    Good luck!

What stopped me from drinking too much was feeling crummy & listless, and having a beer gut. I have a photograph of me bending over & my beer pooch all hanging out like a loaf of bread- well, that's where it came from, liquid bread.
Yeah, you don't want to be "that girl" everyone talks about. I worked with a alcoholic dancer who was 30 but looked 40, sweet as pie when sober but violently arguementative when blackout drunk. (Ach, the stories...) I felt so bad it was within her understanding how bad her problem was, but it was too late for her to change. Don't let it get there.
You need a hobby to vent that energy you stifle with booze...working out is an obvious option, as is learning some new skills, reading, starting a home-based business...if you can tell yourself, I can't go home drunk & wake up too hung-over, I gotta (insert important task here)......
I recall from your previous posts you are a sweetheart who shouldn't be kept away from the world by a drinking problem. PS I also know residents of the Upper Midwest drink like champs (LOL, my ex from WI was all about Drinking) don't beat yourself up. Start a hobby, like Fly Fishing or Chautauqua projects!

Hey there this is my first post , ive been stripping for 5 weeks and wen I first started I promised myself I wouldnt drink but Ive discovered that wen I have just one or two I make more money. But I would recommend drinking vodka and redbull because the redbull gives you energy so you never tend to get too drunk on it ..

Yep, we all have. She knows. Sometimes she'll shrug it off and sometimes she'll mumble, "I'm not drunk. I'm just really tired." Well, having a bottle of vodka will do that to you. But yeah, she's fully aware of the situation so there's not really anything else to do but step around her when she's stretched out on the floor.

I understand what you’re going through. Last night I went to work on an empty stomach (I was so absorbed in that Mystery/PL thread....I forgot to eat), got plastered quickly and freaked out on management at 12 am. They were very supportive and told me it’s normal to have a “bad” day once in awhile, but I hate it.

I feel the reason why I drink at work is because I’m an introvert...most of the time I don’t feel like talking or being around people. So being “on” for 7 hours is friggin exhausting. I think I shouldn’t work the weekends anymore because it’s like a night club in there, so it’s difficult for me not to be susceptible to partying.

But yes, I do make a lot more money when my buzz is just right.
