    Default Straightening Perms

I love straight perms. I got my first one in Beijing for about $30. It's better than straightening every day (My hair has layers and starts frizzing and waving if it's even remotely humid, and no frizz to boot. It's a pain at first, as you can't even tuck your hair behind your ears for a couple weeks, but it's worth it. Here in America, you have to hunt around in Chinatown salons for straight perms, as most salons only offer relaxing treatments. The price is a bit steep, as it starts at $150 for medium-length hair.

Anyone else swear by them? Anyone know any cheap places in Houston?

from my knowledge, a relaxer is a straight perm. There are two basic types, thio and hydroxide. Then there's the Japanese technique, which is applying heat to a thio relaxer. Do you know exactly what they use? I'd be really intrested to know if a new chemical/technique is out...

If your hair is naturally curly (like mine) the "regular" relaxers will probably only work for about 2 weeks. It still dries out your hair, but it doesn't stay straight for long.

I think the only way to go totally relaxed "permanently" is with the Japenese Straightening. But, I've never seen it done for less than $500. It's very time intensive and if someone's only charging $150, I'd be a little leery.

i have had the japanese perm done about 3 years ago. $250 i loved it when i did iti had long hair very thick. it gave me stick strait hair at first then after a while it managed to get a little volume. i could wash my hair all the time! some may think this is gross but before i would only wash it like every four days or untill it got really greasy. ahaha my secret. the only think i hated is that when it grew out it looked like i had a major case of hat head! i was thinking of getting it done again but the stick strait look is not very in right now. at lease in with me. i like the big curl look like soft waves

Yeah, it can be $150 for shorter lengths, but superlong hair (like mine used to be) can run upwards of $450. Everything is cheaper in Chinatown (Japanese salons tend to be disgustingly expensive), and straight perms are no exceptions.

I also avoided washing my hair a lot when I had the perm. Sometimes I'd slap on a shower cap, sometimes I'd just condition.
