    Default Bleh SICK!!!

It's not often I get sick, but I think the recent combination of job / moving stress and all the RockStar-esque partying we did in Vegas last weekend caused my immunity to plummet

It's Saturday night, I've been feeling like shit since Wednesday night / Thursday morning, and I have to fly to Philly this Tuesday for a 2week stripper booking.

    This is bad because:
    1. My head is so congested it feels like I'm carrying bricks on my head. I need to be better for the trip so I can maximize my travel time.
    2. Last time I flew congested my ears wouldn't pop during the descent and they felt like they were going to explode for the entire 45-ish minutes. I will do just about anything to avoid going through that again!

Dayquil / Nyquil usually work wonders, but not this time
I've been taking my vitamins and started gobbling Olive leaf, but not sure how well this stuff works on colds/flu. My internet research says it's good, and it kicked the shit out of a bacterial mouth infection a couple months ago, but still...

Anybody got any ideas? At least on how to clear this damn congestion for a plane ride??

You could take Zinc and Echinacea along with your vitamins (if you are not already) to reduce the length of time you are sick. You may want to take Mucinex to help with the congestion and sinus pressure. My mother says it helps a lot with her frequent sinus headaches.

Eat chili peppers (the capsasin makes your sinus mucus thin out.) + fresh peppers are high in Vitamin C.

Take some L-Lysine. & Drink a bunch of water too, to where you feel "satiated" & have to empty your bladder out.

    Hmmm

I followed a suggestion by CO

Get Zinc losenges, B-12 and drink lots of fluids.

    B-12 helps...a LOT.

I second the Airborne idea. Take it every 3 hrs, or whatever it says on the tube. On the plane, take Sudafed 1/2 hour after take off, I do this everytime I fly to avoid painful ear "popping". Oh, yeah, and steam your head as much as possible with hot showers or a humidifier, a humidifier w/ eucalyptus oil is ideal. Feel better!

Sweetheart, it wasn't the stress or the Vegas gig. It was those aluminum tubes known as aircraft. Petri dishes for rhinoviruses, damn them, with circulating air and enclosed spaces. With a 48-hour incubation period for symptoms, you were right on schedule for feeling like shit after your return flight home. You just caught a cold from some other bastard on the plane.

I am really sorry. I hope you feel much better soon.

I don't know how you feel about OTC (uh, over-the-counter) meds vs. prescription vs. natural cures, but here are my suggestions for fixing the congestion.

Sudafed will reduce your congestion by about 30-40%, and it works fairly well on the upper sinuses, where you are most prone to ear-blockage through the eustashian tube into your inner ear during the pressure changes caused by aircraft descent. As a guy, we pay a real price for this (Sudafed is known as the "anti-Viagra," and is actually prescribed as a way to shrink one of those "24-hour erections" the Viagra ads always warn you about.) But here is a dirty little secret -- Sudafed can increase orgasmic intensity in a male by at least 200%. But it does make it harder to get him off because of.... well, never mind. I digress.

Are you prone to rebound congestion? If not, you might try something like Afrin right before you get on the plane. It will allow you to breathe, but it will only clear your lower sinuses (if you've never used it before, it may also burn a bit). The down side of Afrin is that it can be highly addictive, like most topical decongestants, and that's why doctors have stopped recommending it. "Rebound congestion" is dependency on the Afrin just to keep your sinuses open after you get over the actual rhinovirus infection. Just go cold-turkey for 24 hours and you'll come out of it OK.

The infection will run its course in 7 - 10 days no matter what you do, but I know that you need a faster solution. I really hope you do feel better soon.

I had that happen on a plane once, the pain was so bad I was actually crying, for god's sake! It was sheer agony, and I think I damaged my hearing as a result. It happened several times within a couple years--though that was the worst. It was so bad I asked the stewardess if she had anything to help the pain, and I don't do that sort of thing.

She was a big help, too--snippily saying "Well, you're not supposed to fly at all if you have any sort of ear problem." Well, gee, thanks--could you land the plane then and let me off, please?

I was scared to ever fly again, but when I was flying up to Michigan all the time a couple years ago it was fine.

I'd say get lots and lots of rest, to--stay in fucking bed from now until then, if necessary. I'm sure your guy won't mind, lol...

Wow, do I ever appreciate this, since though I very rarely ever get sick, it's always the ears that get me.

I'll just pop a couple Sudafed from now on to be on the safe side, unless I'm flying to meet a woman again, lol...

Well I'm sure that's where I got it, but my point was that my immunity is normally ROCKIN and plane rides, etc, don't usually make me sick. I'm thinking all the recent stress, etc is what lowered my normal immune function to allow that to happen.

Sudafed - I used to use that in high school for colds but for a reason I can't remember, switched to day/nyquil. The multi-symptom thing I guess. Thanks for the tip, I'll get me some sudafed for the plane ride. Hopefully I'll be better (at least not contagious) by Wednesday, my first day of work.

I prefer natural meds if I can find something that works, but I'll use chemicals if I have to.

I'll be popping the vitamins / herbals like a maniac for the next few days.

I don't like taking anything for anything, but I'd gobble Sudafed like candy to avoid that kind of pain again...

Zicam works great. Also drinking pineapple juice along with golden seal drops, and drinking peppermint tea with elderberry drops throughout the day (elderberry has a high concentration of Vitamin C) you could feel better in a few days. I have been sick this week too with a cold, and have been doing the same things I am mentioning to you and am starting to feel better today.

I like this Super Lysine stuff and find it nips colds in the bud.

I hope you feel better! And fast!

I eat Vitamin C chewables like candy when I have cold/flu symptoms and it helps me a lot. Also, if the sinuses around your nose/cheeks area feel all blocked up... I know this sounds odd but... using a back massager or a vibrator on that area loosens everything up real good.

Take a shot of Otrivin nose spray before you get on a plane if you have ear issues. Since the ears, nose, and throat are all connected, if you keep your nasal passages wide open, your eustachian tubes will be too. Then, you will be able to release any pressure buildup by chewing gum and swallowing. Sipping a hot beverage during descent can also help, as the steam helps keep your nasal passages relaxed and open. So can strong peppermint.

I never get sick when I fly. I take an Emergen-C packet every day. Simple packets of vitamin C powder you add to water. When I am flying, I do a double dose, and sip the mixture the entire time I'm flying. I used to get sick every time I flew, but I no longer do. That, and never touching my hands to my face while I am on the plane, and washing my hands thoroughly. Airplanes are filthy, and the cold and flu virus will find their way into your system if you touch your mouth or rub your eyes after touching a contaminated surface.
