Default So I found a web guy

I was out partying Friday night and with us was a friend of a friend and turns out he is a website builder. He offered to do my site for free on what ever host I wanted. He seems pretty cool and didnt try to hit on me the whole time we were all there.

*What are some things I can ask him to ensure his professionalism?*
I have some nude and some suggested nudes that I want to go in my portfolio for one website. The other is for work to show my schedule. The damn manager doesnt want to pay a guy to fix our schedule so we can make more money....another story.

I'm not sure what you mean by professionalism. Do mean like not hit on you or not sell your nude pictures and stuff?

I'm suspicious of any any dude (photographer or web designer) who offers his services free of charge to very attractive young women. I'd ask to see a portfolio of his work and I'd be cautious of giving any detailed information about yourself until you've seen it.

I've never not paid a web designer and I've worked with three. A lot of web designers can be....how shall we say....a little bit flaky. They're kind of like contractors; whatever they say will take two weeks will take two months. And they have a tendency to vanish into thin air. So when you agree upon a design make absolute sure you get all of the files used to create your site copied to a CD or uploaded to an FTP connection and transfer them to your hard disk.

Guy + pretty girl + offers for free help = guy wants to get in girl's pants.

Not always, obviously. Maybe just 98% of the time.

yeah it's probably likely that he wants to set up a paysite for you and take a percentage of the profits.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. That was my biggest worry that he would steal my pictures and sell them somewhere. I wouldnt run a pay site though I can see why someone would want to make a pay site. Fuckittoll I'll just do it myself.

Yes, if you are that concerned, then you can do it yourself. there are a few sites online that will help you build a site with relatively little web design/development experience. you're concerns are valid. if you run into your pictures later, suing him will be difficult to pursue and you might not getting anything out of it.

    good luck

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Designing a Webpage is a great course in HTML, Java, FTP, and all you really need to know. It even comes with a disk with an HTML editor, an FTP program, and other really great files and programs. I highly recommend it.

If I were a lady wanting to move into web work, I would totally contact that Kate's Playground girl. She seems well on her way and looks for up and coming talent. You can go as far or as short as you want.

TM, you can put up a site pretty easily by using a WYSIWYG editor and/or templates. My hosting provider charges $100/year and includes loads of templates to which you can add your text and such. Also included are form mail, gallery, guestbook, simple search, bulletin boards, chat generators, shopping cart, etc. It's pretty easy to setup these things and insert the code for them into your pages. It's not the most sophisticated thing in the world, but works well for most situations, certainly for what your goals are.

If you're concerned about someone selling your pics, any surfer could grab them and sell them unless you take certain precautions, the simplest of which would be adding your own watermark - the "property of _____.com" thing - directly onto the pics. That doesn't keep people from passing them around, but it would help stop them being sold.

Anyone with a little bit of knowledge and the right editor can make a website. It's only for the more technical stuff (databases etc) that you require a professional. Plus a professional will have a website with actual working examples of his work (usually clients' websites) and references who you can call up yourself to inquire about his work.
