It is completely fucked up that it's cheaper to eat crap rather than healthy food. However, you don't have to bankrupt yourself buying organics; just don't buy heavily processed foods. Stick to whole foods (protein, veggies, fruits, grains) instead of snack foods, prepared meals, etc. That is still far better for you than crap and not as expensive as organics. Also, save your money if you're buying organic milk at the store and go for the local dairy; most organically branded milk, especially Horizon, is a scam.

I totally know; we have the luxury to decide to buy grass-fed, range-raised beef from local farms, local organic produce, etc, and our grocery bills are fucking enormous. It would not be feasible at all for most people to feed their families in that fashion, thanks to the agroindustrial complex.

I eat organic where I can.

But Tombstone Pizza's are sooooo good.

If you are in a house, maybe you can plant a little garden in the back?

Like Susan said, the food that makes ya fat is the heavily processed food. But then again - a lot of them (not all) have the supplements that make ya healthy too.

Kinda half a dozen of one and half a dozen of another.

I don't think it's the organic that is expensive. It's the non-organic that's cheap. But it's at the cost of putting weird chemicals in our bodies. If I'm a farmer and I can produce 2 heads of lettuce with the use of pesticides for the same cost as one head without, of course I'm going to choose the pesticides. But as a consumer, YUCK! I am with Susan that you can eat healthy and inexpensively as long as you are choosing the right foods to begin with. Processed foods are so nutritionally void too that you need to eat more to get what you would out of less processed foods.

I think if you want to buy organic, pick and choose. Obviously anything animal product is going to be better for you if organic (including milk and eggs) because of the god-knows-what the animals are being injected with to produce the most bang for the buck for the farmer.

Yes, this is true. I have produce and staples (milk, bread, buter, and cheese) delivered weekly. The bill ranges form $70 to $90 depending on our products that week. Then I go grocery shopping once a month for the other stuff I need (salad dressing, mac and cheese and other easy dinners, frozen veggies, yogurt, etc) and the cost is unbelievable.

The easiest way to save $$ IMO is to refuse to buy anything that does not meet your nutritional standards. In my house, that was all chips, pop, desserts, white bread, etc. Not all foods you buy need to be organic. Anything that you peel and eat (like bananas) you are almost as well off to buy the regular version. Things like apples and pears, you can wash in a produce cleaner and get most of the crud off. I believe (although I might be wrong here; somebody feel free to correct me) root veggies are not so important to be organic b/c they grow under the ground, protected from pesticides, and you scrub them anyway. Thingys that are really hard to get clean, like broccoli and spinach, you are better off buying organic.

Frozen veggies and fruits are cheaper than fresh, usually, and they have the advantage that they don't go bad easily. Also dried beans and fruits. A box of raisins may seem ungodly expensive, but when you consider how many grapes ther are in that box, it is not so bad.

Consider beans, cheese, and other meat-alternatives. A box of veggie burgers costs about $3.69 here. That is more than the equivalent ground beef, but less than most regular cuts of meat, and who wants to buy and eat ground beef all the time anyway? And the veggie burgers are leaner anyway. Peanut butter is also a good meet substitiute, and faily cheap.

Check out your local farmers markets. The produce is usually fairly reasonable in price, and it also is not treated for long-distance shipping. You can talk to the farmers who grow the stuff and find out what they put on it, then make your decision to buy or not. I do this every summer, buy a ton, and freeze what I can't eat right away.

You might also consider joining a local grocery co=op. You usualy have to pay a membership fee (like Sam's) and/or volunteer some time to the co-op (like sorting and packing peoples orders one month out of the year). It might be worthwhile to you check it out.

thank you guys for your input i just had a frustrating time of it today shopping. I am very into whole grain everything i like kashi crakers and i even whole grain pasta put my hubby hates it so we have to use white pasta but i make up for it with everything else. I saw this show honey were killing the kids on tlc and it was an eye opener i was proud of myself becuse feed my kids the why she wanted kids fed but i was dismayed at how some kids are eating i just don't unerstand i think i good food fondation sets the tone for so much in out lives and i wish the healthy food seemed more mainstream instead of gormet in the stores so more people would eat that way and feed there kids that way. I think they should put limits on what people can buy with food stamps to force familyes in to heathier ways so peopple will live heather and longer lives.

Absolutely! I think it is crazy to go into Aldi and see people buying $200 worth of chips and ice cream with thier food stamps. Stamps are supposed to helpo parents feed thier families, but there is no point if they are going ot buy that crap!

Try weaning hubby into whole grain everything. Start by going half and half, then slowly increase the whole grain portion. Or jsut make a small pan of white pasta for him. Mine succumbed to the guuilt trip when I to9l dhim I had to make a specila pan of pasta just for him.

I agree that it's bullshit that healthy food costs more than junk food. I am doing the Atkins Diet and I am going to make these low carb cream puffs that I saw a recipe for on www.sugarfreesheila.com. I went to the store to buy almond flour and it was $12.49 for a one pound bag of almond flour! Yikes! I used to be able to spend only $25 per week on groceries, but now that I'm doing Atkins, I'm spending more because meat and cheese can be expensive.

Agreed! I am amazed at what people find acceptable to feed children...at my daughters daycare the infant room menu includes...corn dogs, tacos, french toast sticks w/syrup..wtf? we're talking about babies So we send her with her own organic fruit, veggies, pasta etc...yes, more expensive, but I think it's important for her development.

Yikes! My SIL feeds her kids anything. Including Dr. Pepper for the 2 year old. I feel awful about it. but I can't do anything aboput it. OTOH, she freaks out b/c I will not give my kid pop.

I limit my son's sugar and allow him NO caffine other than what is in chocolate and absolutely no meat. I also limit his junk food and especially bakery goods that can contain trans fats and preservatives.

And No, krchab99, you are NOT 5he only one who sees it. But we are few and far between.

those kashi chewy granola bars are the shiznit! The cereal and crackers are definitely boring.

Oh, and Costco has a lot of organics stuff too, if that helps cut costs. I got some organic oatmeal cookies and cheese crackers there. I love Costco.

Well, it doesn't HAVE to be organic... But I did this study a year ago (granted, it was only me and I'm not exactly a licensed researcher... I just know the basics) and found that people with higher incomes had lower levels of obesity.

I have gone to the organic grocery store and spent $30 buying a piece of fish, mushrooms, and a small salad. Think of how many big macs you could get with $30? Unfortunately cheaper food is often bad for you.

Completely beside the point - I am amused when the companies refer to ORGANIC food....as if other foods are not also carbon-based. That aside, yes, Health Food is now a HUGE source of income. Wish I'd gotten in on it when I was a kid. Yanno what? The hippies had the right idea!

One big problem is packaging and distribution. It's actually cheaper to add sugar, salt, bleach out flour, etc., and make huge gigantic batches of it and ship it out in giant shipments, than it is to process and package it while leaving it the hell alone like it should be, in smaller batches, and ship it out in smaller shipments.

OTOH hand the health food craze is a big fad, and tends to be popular with people with higher incomes, so I think there is some arbitrary and unfair inlation going on, as well...

If you REALLY want a good deal.. find your closest farm and actually buy it fresh from the farm.

TASTIEST damn apples I ever had, VERY cheap with a free homemade apple pie.

But if there are no farms. Sadness.

I think it's worth spending a little extra for fruits and veggies that are organic so they're not filled with lots of pesticides. Unfortunately none of the groceries near me sell organic produce so I'll buy the produce that is less likely to have pesticides used on them.
Here's a really informative explaining which produce have the most pesticides used on thhttp://www.foodnews.org/reportcard.phpem:
