    Default Another Step Toward Unrest?

I just got wind of this now, as I've been away from the Toronto Star website this weekend:

    http://www.thestar.com/NASApp/cs/Con...l=968793972154

    *Snip*

Toronto police Chief Bill Blair called on Muslims and non-Muslims alike to let cooler heads prevail Sunday after 17 people were arrested in connection with what authorities say was a plan to stage a massive terrorist attack. The 17 suspects who were arrested Friday, men and youths alike, were allegedly “motivated by an ideology based on politics, hatred and terrorism, and not on faith,”

    *Snip*

Police allege the 17 were involved in a plot to stage a massive terrorist attack by fashioning explosives out of three tonnes of ammonium nitrate fertilizer — three times the quantity used in the Oklahoma City bombing that killed 168 people in 1995.

    ============================

This sort of thing has gotten everyone on edge, even here. A mosque was attacked as a result of this, among other things.

At the initial court hearings on Friday, we had police helicopters and snipers on building roofs, among other things!

    Got me kinda' jumpy...

Not to get political, but the US gov't has been trying to tip off the RCMP/NCIS about this sort of s#!t for several years now. Considering that I live just downwind from nuke plants on the US side of lake ontario, it's reassuring to see that Stephen Harper and the conservatives are finally taking this seriously and making some actual arrests of Canadian (arab descent) citizens who are knee-deep into the jihad.

I have to agree with Melonie on this one!

I will try my best not to turn this into anything too political. Let's just say that our previous govt. was... inept?

What was pointed out is that these folks have been here for *some time*. They're not just 'off the boat'. Why does someone, who is not directly involved, nor threatened (other than typical thuggery type stuff) need to get us involved?

I know that we are all involved, like it or not. I am just using this to make a point.

I didn't even know any of this was going on, until just before I posted the original article, and I live here FFS! Too much SC'ing for me this past week, I guess!

You know, it wasn't too long ago that I sat in a car with some so-called friends, having a cig on a freezing winters day... these guys lapsed into Arabic and started saying that Toronto really needs a suicide bomber.

In retrospect I think they were quite serious, and since getting back to Toronto I've been giving a lot of thought to turning their names over to someone. I just don't really know who. Maybe throught 222-tips website?

Is it true they were hatching a plan to bomb the Parliament buildings and like, behead the prime minister while on tour there? Curious not just because I live basically next door to Parliament, but the whole thing seemed kind of ridiculous. Like hi, what did we do? Our green copper roofs and mildewy libraries so very offensive to you folks, who have grown up here? The whole thing just seems so reminiscent of Zadie Smith's satire on homegrown Londoner Islamic terrorists in her "White Teeth" book. These guys are bored and just really wanna feel important it seems. Honestly, what could possibly be so offensive about peacekeeping in Kandahar?

Non-Muslims on Muslim/Arab lands are anathema to Islamic Fundimentalists. The long term presence of US troops in Saudi Arabia and other places in the Middle East after the 1991 Gulf War was one of the reasons (but not the only one) that inspired Osama Bin Laden to carry out the 9/11 attacks.

242, if you think you should turn in some names, then do. If there's a website where you can do it anonymously, go to an internet cafe and do so.

Yep rediculous but not funny. As bumbling as they were, they had the ability to explode something 3X as big as Oklahoma City.

And don't forget the story of the "Millenium Bomber", who was initially thought to be as bumbling and full of bravado as these kids were... well he got caught on his way to LAX at the British Columbia border with a trunk full of explosives.

Conditions are really bad in a lost of places these kids have ties to. They think that Canada is complacent or contributes to the victimization of Muslims world-wide. Of course they don't learn the true Islamic positon on all these things, they get corrupted by fenatical preachers.

Based on what I know now myself, although it is not an entirely peaceful religion, it is not necessairily homocidal either. The radicals have more influence than their numbers, however, and that complicates things.
