What does that word mean to you?
Do you think the world will end? If so, when?

Everything ends eventually.
I'm Jewish, not Christian, but the Book of Revelation raises my hackles. It looks very similar to what we're going through right now. I don't know how it's going to happen, but I do think that human civilization is breaking down.

Big shrug. Who knows? I know these people of faith - all right, religious wacko nuts - who were convinced that Y2K was the apocalypse. Amazingly enough, they didn't sell all their possessions and quit their jobs and seek a few moments of unblemished peace and prayer in mankind's last year. I mean, faith only goes so far.

Not all that likely, though a lot better than your chances of winning the lottery, but here is a possible apocalypse that has nothing to do with religion:

Actually, it probably isn't big enough to be a total apocalypse, but it would make a damn realistic rehersal drill for the real one.

The Mayan calendar ends at 2012. The Aztec & Purepecha astronomers discerned warnings about the Conquistador's arrival, and yes, many things in Revelation seem to be unfolding......It may be we have many clues about events that will play out over 3-4 hundred years......the end could be happening slowly.
Keep in mind, as Mixtli points out in Gary Jenning's "Aztec"- the world ends for every person when they die........

Life will end and I really couldn't care less. So I die.. that means what exactly? That I'm dead? Whoopie!!! If I'm dead, will I care that I'm dead? Bah.
I'll just live every day like I only have one day left - to the fullest with no regrets.
At least if I die tomorrow in a huge explosion I don't have to pay that girl I owe $30 to. What's she gonna do? Kill me?
Eh, just a 1 in 38,000 chance of it hitting us.Originally Posted by Wwanderer

Don't worry - it is all lies from those "scientists." But fear not, we will get them and their "evolution" out of our society as soon as possible so the good word of goat sacrificing men can be made the law and custom of the land.Originally Posted by francescadubois

On a serious note - floods, plagues, war - just earth doing it's usual thing.
We dont need an apocalypse.. the human race is going to destroy the world on its own.
The world was here long before us and will be here long after. We're not going to destroy the world. However, we are very likely going to destroy ourselves; and if not, something else will get us. The average lifespan of a species is about 400,000 years and then it goes extinct. Scientists estimate that 99% of the species that have ever existed are extinct now. Homo sapiens has been around about 400,000 years, so our number will be up soon. I wonder what will become the dominant species once we are gone?
Actually I believe the humane race will destroy the world... with bombs, nuclear explosives, the fact we keep wiping out forests and rain forests(thats where our clean air supply comes from) plus when you factor in pollution etc... the world has been around longer then the human race but remember it didnt have everything we have now.
We can ALTER the world, yes. But I doubt we'll actually destroy it. It took stronger forces than us to create it, and it would take a hell of a lot more than us to destroy it.
The sun will go supernova in about 10 billion years, then it is game over!
I think if we were all going to blow ourselves up that it would have happened already.
People have been saying that the world will end on this day or that for as long as people have had language. At last check we are still here, tens of thousands of years later. Us humans might not be the most enlightened and peaceful race in the universe, but we certainly have a strong will to live, and have been seeking to avoid death as much as possible.
I almost shit myself when I was in high school and some religious group gained publicity by predicting the exact day and time the world was going to end. I was upset by it because I didn't know that people do this all the time, and I wondered if it could really be true. That day came and went, and here I am 20 years later and still... nothing. How anti-climatic!
For 1000 years people have been pointing to revelations and claiming that "the end is near".
The one thing that is undisputable fact is that our sun will go supernova in roughly 10 billion years. Everything else is just religious bologna.
I'm not saying that if Osama Bin Laden got a nuke that he wouldn't use it, but the rest of the planet will do everything in it's power to stop him from using it.

Oh sure we are! Haven't you heard that astronomers have found a solar system that has the potential of being able to support life on one of the planets? I'd say in a couple of million we should be able to colonize planets that we are currently unable to live on today because we will be able to change our DNA to allow us to live in those enviroments.Originally Posted by Prester_John

Actually Paris, our sun can't go supernova; it's either too big or too small. (It's been awhile since I was at Space Camp, but I was a huge astronomy geek.) Our sun will most likely just gradually fade over time, but our planet will have cooled and become inhospitable long before then.
My bad about the sun going supernova. The bad news is that I was waaaayyy off in my time predictions for the end of the world. And not in our favor!
10 billion years is super optomistic, but it will likely be only 4 billion years until the sun burns out. Don't you just hate it when you think you have more time than you actually do?
PJ, I'll race you to the next planet. I htink I can get it done in under 900,000 years, but I have to get busy now, or I won't hit that deadline!

It's all a matter of perspective. I recently had to listen to a schizoid rant about how there have been many different Phases of Human Civilization on this earth, the world is much older than we realize, and many previous civilizations have experienced their own Apocalypses (the fabled Atlantis, for one..) But there's no way to verify that....
I can legitimately say the civilizations of North & South America were destroyed by the European conquerors...(Mr. Mad Max Himself Mel Gibson made a movie about that, titled "Apocalypto" for release later this year.) The question of the end of the world is too subjective.
If anyone is interested in knowing much more about this subject, I highly recommend Jared Diamond's book Collapse. Actually, I highly recommend anything by Jared Diamond, period.

Nova, not supernova. It'll most likely swell as a red giant past the orbit of Mercury as its hydrogen gets converted to helium. After it has blown off much of its stellar mass, it'll convert down to a white dwarf star.
At least, that's what's projected from the physics involved and looking at the evolutionary stages of others stars the size of our own.
Mr. Eliot had it right. A white dwarf is a whimper of a star.
