    Default Not Photogenic

So, yeah, I've wanted to do a bit of modeling, and I have done a few spreads. But honestly I haven't been happy with any pictures that have been taken of me. I'm not unattractive in real life. But the camera turns me into a haggard looking beast. Is it the photographer? The lighting? Or should I give up trying to make myself look good on film when I'm just not gonna?

Aww, I'm not photogenic either (I have a lot of angles on my face & am very short.) Lighting is super-key, sometimes light "washes out" the image a bit in one's favor, and to be honest, be as angular in poses as possible.

Everyone can look good in a photgraph, that is a great photographer's skill (ex., Annie Leibovitz.)

Lighting, angles, and mood. Good light direction and tone and intensity are essential for good portraits. Everyone has their right angles, and good guidance by the photographer will build the right mood. That's one way that Annie gets some of her good shots. Mick Jagger is homely, but she catches him laughing, and it works.

Software can also do well, although it's immediately noticeable when someone's trying too much blurring or smoothing to help out a picture.

If you want high-tone glamour, you might see who's doing what at . If you're interested in B&W portraits, feel free to PM me about your general area. I might know someone.

I actually hear all the time that I'm better looking in person...and I'm never happy with my photos either...but maybe we just see our flaws.

If you have done a few spreads...well a photographer isn't going to waste or ruin his reputation on you...so I have a feeling your just super hard on yourself

Practise in a mirror and see what angles suit you best. I always do a ton of eye stuff...if you look at my photos you'll notice that. You need to find your 'thing' and use it.

    I bet you photograph beautifully!

I'm the same way. I look good in real life, but a good picture of me is incredibly rare. Even my boyfriend, who thinks I'm a goddess, always gets a disappointed look when I'm in a picture. It takes a really good photographer and a lucky shot!

I look awful in most pictures...even the rare 'good' ones don't look like me. It's weird. That's why there are so few pictures of me. I freak when people pull a camera on me as if they pulled out a rifle.

the first photo shoot i did, i was devastated when i saw the results, because they were SO bad. i'd been looking in the mirror before my shoot and i thought i looked hot, so at first i assumed i was just really, really unphotogenic.

it turns out, i'm not unphotogenic at all. the bad results were a combination of me having no experience and not being comfortable, not knowing how to pose properly and just generally having no idea, and it was also because the shoot was rushed, the photographer had never worked with me before and wasn't used to shooting first-timers, etc.

the only way to get good is to just keep doing it. find photographers you can shoot TFP with and get experience, and eventually you'll learn exactly what to do infront of a camera, and suddenly you'll realise you aren't so unphotogenic after all!

    good luck with it!

Thanks everyone for the support and advice. I posted a few pics in the Gallery. Those are some that came out okay. Maybe I'll keep looking and try to find a photographer who capture my good side! Wanna try ProMarket?

It may not be you or the photographer. Are you applying your own makeup or investing in the work of a MUA? Trust me, you need a MUA. I dont' care how well you do your "real life" makeup, it doesn't hold a candle to what a MUA can do for you

A good way to become "photogenic" is to get in front of the camera as much as possible. Get a lot of pictures taken of you. You may even take pics of yourself in front of the mirror to get practice. The idea is to become comfortable in front of the camera as Darcy mentioned above. A very good way to get comfortable like that is to become accustomed to being photographed. Also it will help if you are not self-aware or at least try to not be too self-aware and self-conscious.

Experience is key. Try the TFP/CD route to gain the experience as this is what I have done and continue to do (plus I usually make sure that there is an agreement between the photog and myself that we both can use the photos commercially otherwise generally the photos you receive via a TFP/CD shoot are still copyright the photographer and you can only use them in a portfolio/non-profit manner).

I've never used a make up artist. If you have, what did she charge? I danced with a girl who ended up doing porn and between you and me and the rest of Stripperweb she was a DAWG. But I saw some of the promos they shot with her with serious make up and she passed for human. Maybe they could do the same for me!

It's impossible that a beautiful woman (or almost any woman) can't get good pictures. I've done alot of photos for people who "suck at pictures" and then when they see my images say "I look great!"

It's all about finding the model's style, where she feels comfortable, getting good makeup (makeup for photos is different than makeup for work), etc.

I work mostly with dancers, but almost every client I've had has said the same thing.
