Angry Ann Coulter needs to be slapped.

    This is absolutely disrespectful.

    Coulter calls 9/11 widows "witches"

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Conservative author Ann Coulter sparked a storm on Wednesday after describing a group of September 11 widows who backed the Democratic Party as millionaire "witches" reveling in their status as celebrities.

"I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much," Coulter writes in her book "Godless: The Church of Liberalism," published on Tuesday, referring to four women who headed a campaign that resulted in the creation of the September 11 Commission that investigated the hijacked plane attacks.

Coulter wrote that the women were millionaires as a result of compensation settlements and were "reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief-arazzis."

The four, Kristen Breitweiser, Patty Casazza, Mindy Kleinberg and Lorie Van Auken, declined to discuss the book in detail but issued a statement saying they had been slandered.

"There was no joy in watching men that we loved burn alive. There was no happiness in telling our children that their fathers were never coming home again," said the statement signed by the four, along with a fifth woman, Monica Gabrielle.

The four women, who live in or around East Brunswick, New Jersey, became friends after September 11 and formed a group that agitated for the investigation. "Our only motivation ever was to make our nation safer," they said.

Coulter, whose books include the bestseller "How to talk to a Liberal (If You Must)," argues in the new book the women she dubs "the Witches of East Brunswick" wanted to blame
President George W. Bush for not preventing the attacks.

She criticized them for making a campaign advertisement for Democratic presidential candidate Sen.
John Kerry in 2004, and added: "By the way, how do we know their husbands weren't planning to divorce these harpies? Now that their shelf life is dwindling, they'd better hurry up and appear in Playboy."

    PERSONAL ATTACKS

Asked by Reuters why she made such personal comments, Coulter said by email: "I am tired of victims being used as billboards for untenable liberal political beliefs."

"A lot of Americans have been seething over the inanities of these professional victims for some time," she added.

The New York Post, owned by Rupert Murdoch's News. Corp., on Wednesday slammed the comments in an article headlined "Righty writer Coulter hurls nasty gibes at 9/11 gals."

Coulter, a regular television commentator and figurehead for some conservatives, was challenged on NBC's "Today" show on Tuesday over what host Matt Lauer called "dramatic" remarks, prompting her to say "You are getting testy with me."

Coulter is known for a combative column after September 11 saying: "We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity." In one book, she wrote: "Even Islamic terrorists don't hate America like liberals do."

Her latest comments were quoted on radio stations in New York on Wednesday and the book was the subject of debate on Web sites such as www.salon.com. The Daily News newspaper's front-page headline was "Coulter the Cruel."

The controversy appeared to be doing no harm to sales of Coulter's latest book, which was listed as the fourth best seller of the day at online retailer Amazon.com on Wednesday.

I was reading the transcript of last night's Hannity and Colmes which AC was on. She's certifiably nuts.

Who knows, maybe she's trying the Westboro Baptist Church approach to selling books and keeping her name in the press. I'm sure her sheep (as well as some of her detractors) will buy her propaganda as always.

    And the response:

Statement of September 11th Advocates Response to “Godless”

    Statement of September 11th Advocates
    Response to "Godless"

We did not choose to become widowed on September 11, 2001. The attack, which tore our families apart and destroyed our former lives, caused us to ask some serious questions regarding the systems that our country has in place to protect its citizens. Through our constant research, we came to learn how the protocols were supposed to have worked. Thus, we asked for an independent commission to investigate the loopholes which obviously existed and allowed us to be so utterly vulnerable to terrorists. Our only motivation ever was to make our Nation safer. Could we learn from this tragedy so that it would not be repeated?

We are forced to respond to Ms. Coulter’s accusations to set the record straight because we have been slandered.

Contrary to Ms. Coulter’s statements, there was no joy in watching men that we loved burn alive. There was no happiness in telling our children that their fathers were never coming home again. We adored these men and miss them every day.

It is in their honor and memory, that we will once again refocus the Nation’s attention to the real issues at hand: our lack of security, leadership and progress in the five years since 9/11.

We are continuously reminded that we are still a nation at risk. Therefore, the following is a partial list of areas still desperately in need of attention and public outcry. We should continuously be holding the feet of our elected officials to the fire to fix these shortcomings.

    1. Homeland Security Funding based on risk. Inattention to this area causes police officers, firefighters and other emergency/first responder personnel to be ill equipped in emergencies. Fixing this will save lives on the day of the next attack.

    2. Intelligence Community Oversight. Without proper oversight, there exists no one joint, bicameral intelligence panel with power to both authorize and appropriate funding for intelligence activities. Without such funding we are unable to capitalize on all intelligence community resources and abilities to thwart potential terrorist attacks. Fixing this will save lives on the day of the next attack.

    3. Transportation Security. There has been no concerted effort to harden mass transportation security. Our planes, buses, subways, and railways remain under-protected and highly vulnerable. These are all identifiable soft targets of potential terrorist attack. The terror attacks in Spain and London attest to this fact. Fixing our transportation systems may save lives on the day of the next attack.

    4. Information Sharing among Intelligence Agencies. Information sharing among intelligence agencies has not improved since 9/11. The attacks on 9/11 could have been prevented had information been shared among intelligence agencies. On the day of the next attack, more lives may be saved if our intelligence agencies work together.

    5. Loose Nukes. A concerted effort has not been made to secure the thousands of loose nukes scattered around the world – particularly in the former Soviet Union. Securing these loose nukes could make it less likely for a terrorist group to use this method in an attack, thereby saving lives.

    6. Security at Chemical Plants, Nuclear Plants, Ports. We must, as a nation, secure these known and identifiable soft targets of Terrorism. Doing so will save many lives.

    7. Border Security. We continue to have porous borders and INS and Customs systems in shambles. We need a concerted effort to integrate our border security into the larger national security apparatus.

    8. Civil Liberties Oversight Board. Given the President’s NSA Surveillance Program and the re-instatement of the Patriot Act, this Nation is in dire need of a Civil Liberties Oversight Board to insure that a proper balance is found between national security versus the protection of our constitutional rights.

Good God, the misery these women have suffered. Imagine: Your man, your ROCK, being burned alive on international television. You get pissy (justifiably so) and want to find out why the greatest nation on the planet is so incompetent as to allow probably the most valuable set of buildings in our country be attacked by planes, and YOU'RE the witch?!?!?

That psycho bitch hasn't the SLIGHTEST idea of the shit they've been through. NONE of us do.

Actually she should have at least somewhat of an idea. AC had a good friend named Barbara Olsen who was on the plane which hit the Pentagon. In fact that was what sparked her now infamous "nvade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity" tirade.

Which if you think about it makes her castigation of these housewives for being publicity whores a wee bit ironic. I guess aggrandizing oneself (not to mention making lots of money) off 9/11 is okay as long as you're pointing fingers of blame at the right people (or perhaps more correctly the "left" people).

Yeah, and the "everyone who's not an ultra conservative right wing nutty ass bitch like me is doomed to hell" bit is getting old. I refuse to watch her or listen to her or buy her shit. I never understood why people buy the writings of/watch a person they KNOW they don't agree with just so they can get more pissed off (not to mention put more money in this bitch's pockets). It just doesn't make sense to me.

^^^ I totally agree. Some people just want to get mad it seems, sometimes I'm like that. I've read her website and I can't stand her but I would never do anything to put more money in her pocket. If I want to get pissed off so bad I think I'll just take a trip down to the library. I heard that the book is # 2 on the bestseller list. I just hope all those people don't agree with her.

Ann Coulter feels that the more obnoxious and tactless she is the more she outdoes Ross Perot and Michael Savage, the more she'll be the darling of the conservative world, men will want to bone her, and she'll be able to regain her youth She's a sad, pathetic attention-seeking cunt who seeks male validation and approval in the worst way. That's a word that I reserve for very special circumstances and she more than merits it.

To a disabled Vietnam vet on MSNBC, she said this "People like you caused us to lose that war." When that bitch crawls on her belly in a jungle, gets hit by a mortar, and loses an limb to the ensuing gangrene, she can talk all she wants, but until then, she should shut up and settle for Michelle Malkin.

Sorry I'm swearing Rhiannon, but I really despise this woman.

This will be the first book from her I won't be buying. Many conservatives are having brain problems as much as the far left does.

We are just trapped and unheard. How come all these loons on both the left and the right can be heard but are people who are not lock step with the fringes unheard? How come these people are frigging being presented as speaking for us? I mean both Ann and Al Franken! On some issues I am on the left and on others I am on the right. But it is like one has to be all one way or all the other way.

    Oh. my. god.

I'm speechless. It further confirms my belief that Republicans are just plain mean.
And that the ultra-conservatives are a bunch of dangerous psychotics who have drunk their own Kool-Aid if they believe that average Americans want to hear this kind of absurd and vile propaganda.

I know how you feel, but my dad, whose politics are a little to the left of...oh...say...Castro'shardly ever reads stuff written by his political allies. He believes it is far more important to find out what the enemy is saying. Though I can't stomach it myself most of the time, I do see his point.

Deogol, I agree. You may be left where I may be right, and vice versa, but the point is that we're trying to make up our minds based upon some analysis and not what our political philosophy tells us we should believe - which, according to the extremists, is an entirely wrong way to think.

These ultra-right people calling themselves "conservatives" are anything but. Conservatives believe in free speech, slow and measured change, and states rights. The people who are trying to highjack the philosophy believe in the "right" speech, theocratic-style immediate change, and social legislation at the Federal level.

I have neither seen nor heard this Ann Coulter person, but I hear plenty about her. Reportedly, she's now saying that Jesus would approve of her castigation of those with whom she disagrees. Wack job.

On the other hand.... Nicolina, it might surprise you, then, to learn of some people whom you consider nice on this board who are actually Republicans.

I don't paint Democrats as anti-civilization environmentalists, and I don't paint Republicans as religious nuts. It's a mistake, unless the tactic is to demonize, to apply the description of a fringe element to the broad spectrum of a particular philosophy.

Of course, JZ, you know that I'm a pretty fair-minded person who doesn't really believe that anyone who votes Republican is an evil soul. It's more hyperbole based on the fact that I do think that the basic conservative philosophy is kind of mean-spirited: Every man for himself. Survival of the (financially) fittest. The haves deserve what they have cuz they worked for it, dammit, and the have-nots are a bunch of lazy whining brats who wouldn't know hard work if it bit 'em in the ass and will only be made weaker and lazier by free government handouts.

I just don't buy it. Most wealthy Americans (I'm not talking upper middle class but truly wealthy) inherited a good chunk of their wealth. Bill Gates is the exception, not the rule. Most of the people I know who are struggling financially work at least as hard as Mr. Gates and his ilk.

But the basic right-wing philosophy, it seems (at least as it's being implemented by current leadership) is that the best way to keep our country great is to let the rich folks do whatever they damn well please while the poor and middle class can go fuck themselves--sink or swim as they can, but we won't be throwing them any life rafts, that's for damn sure.

    It just isn't....nice.

I have witnessed severely mentally ill people say incredibly cruel & outrageous things. Yes, Annie, there is a chemical imbalance in your head. Maybe time in a Chinese gulag would fix that.

Smartcookie is right about Coulter craving male approval- Ms. Coulter was fawning over Bill Maher when she did a segment on his show a few months ago- he's a self-admitted coochiehound, so I'm sure she was getting off on hoping to imprint his libido. But boy, if Maher won't eat a hotdog, I'm sure he can't fantasize about that Nazi Toxic Stick Coulter.

Here's a link to an interesting essay from a site Daniela sent me a link to (a pretty good one, too).

It is actually more critical of the left-wing and European tendency to be 'anti-American', but the same stages of 'anti-ism' are apparent in some people of different radical political persuasions, as the author points out.

    http://www.the-american-interest.com/cms/joffe.cfm

Blaming the 'big bad meanies' (whoever they might be in your mind) is often a way of escaping your own weaknesses or culpability, or masking other issues which aren't so easily solved.

Ann Coulter is a perfect match for his model of the worst development of this trend.

But her eyes....are so vapid, and listless. It's so easy to just change the channel. I mean.... like you said, Miss Cookie, what's on her resume that allows her to be taken seriously in this matter at all?

I'd like to pop he/she/it dead in her/his/its fucking foul mouth with an elbow.

The problem with Ann Coulter is the same problem with Katrina Vandeheuvel (of The Nation) and other attention whores--their vitriol and demagoguery add absolutely nothing substantive to the debate. Nothing.

Coulter's recent book on Joe McCarthy is a classic example. Her intent was to prove that McCarthy was right and that the results of turning him into a political pariah had national security implications, and there's not much debate in this day as to the validity of McCarthy's assertions (though his actual accusations were misguided, some say deliberately by disinformation propagated by J.E. Hoover) that Russian agents had thoroughly penetrated not only the State Department but significant portions of the American MIC (which the VENOVA transcripts document quite clearly). But no one reading Coulter's book or listening to junkets and talk show promos can get to that part because she's so damn busy trying to villify and demonize people not sharing her view. Her crass and dirty delivery methods detract from any valid points she might otherwise make. There's already too much of this type of political down-dragging in the current environment; we certainly don't need any more, given the general lack of interest and informed opinion in socio-economic and political matters in the nation, courtesy our LCD public education system.

Coulter and her ilk on both ends of the political spectrum (that freak Randi Rhodes is just as bad only with less documentation to boot) strip any intellectual discourse from the debate in favor of scoring points via ad hominem sound bites. More white noise where more clarity is needed.
Idealism is fine, but as it approaches reality, the costs become prohibitive.

    William F. Buckley, Jr.
