Default HB-1 visas: The Senate immigration bill is being used to cover a big increase.

And a substantial increase at that! This part of the bill really has little, if anything, to do with immigration from the southern border of the U.S. It does indicate, however, just how disingenuous the people in the Senate are re: middle class U.S. citizens

I guess I was nearly asleep this morning. The first link was actually written in 1998. But the current Senate bill re: immigration reform contains a similar provision, unless it has been recently removed. Just goes to show, yet again, how often the U.S. Senate will attempt to screw over the middle class.

But there is a critique that these HB-1 visas are a good thing, but the critique is at least mildly suspect, originating as it does in the U.K. rather than the U.S.

(Raising hand) Victim of H1-B visa replacement. Here is the latest news of "Train your replacement" actions taken by, this time, Bank of America (which had a suicide in the parking lot in a previous "train your replacement" layoff.)

I just read this and the secondary article it links to:

I've been banking with BofA for over 17 years now. I can assure you I will be cancelling all three of my accounts there on Monday.

About four months ago, I went to use my debit card at a restaurant and the food server came back and said it was declined. This was impossible because I knew of the balance in the account. They ran the card again and it came up declined. While I'm on hold with BofA, my wife gives them her debit card (also with BofA) and it's declined too. The reason? BofA lost 20 thousand card numbers in the Las Vegas area. Actually, by "lost" they meant had them stolen by a vendor of theirs. So they cancelled all 20 thousand cards without notifying anyone. Not a peep! I was so close to cancelling my accounts with them back then over that insanity and now THIS! I'm absolutely furious over this and my money will be going to another competing back who I am sure will graciously accept it.

Twice I have been shit canned - once by Tata coming - the other time by Wipro - both Indian "contracting" companies. I know as a contract developer - there is no use to even bother looking for work with the Fortune 1000. Quite a few of my co-workers have left the industry - part of the statistics showing 40% of those with a Masters in CS/Math work outside their degree'd profession. There just are no jobs for american technology people in the Fortune 1000.

Here is another old link(which itself refrences one of the links Deogol provided), from 2000, wherein you can read Senator John McCain's reply to someone who had written a letter regarding concern over the H-1B visas. Quite interesting, if Senator McCain will attempt to receive the Republican primary nomination in 2008. Sadly, it's the usual double-talk which seems to be a primary(pun intended) specialty of politicians.

Don't worry! Technology worker retraining is still being achieved by the government!

The college will use the H1B grant to train individuals in food service industries like restaurants and casinos, Whitehead said.

JCJC will use the pathways grant to train computer technicians and skilled workers for the construction industry. The grants will benefit work force development programs, but not for-credit students, Whitehead said.

From the widely cried slogan "We need math and science workers" to slinging french fries and swinging hammers.

Yes, children, you to can put in the extra hours to learn math and physics while your frat brothers party and fuck so that when you go out into the work world you can be misunderstood by management, paid less than those same frat brothers who do nothing but talk, and fight the rest of society who appreciate ball players more than the people who designed that TV they watch it on.

I tell ya, it's enough to make ya a luddite out of spite.

How can anyone sit there and say this country is not in economic danger just boggles my mind.
