    Default Ripping Headaches

Ive always suffered from severe migraines. They run in my family.

Lately they have been getting a little more frequent, stronger in intensity, and longer in duration. Today I have had one so bad that I called out of work, something I havent done even once since starting the job last Fall.

What do any of you migraine sufferers do when its this bad? Most over the counter pain killers dont seem to work for me anymore.

    <--ouch.

I've tried smoking crack. Didnt work so well.

Actually, lying still and drifting off to sleep used to work. I would wake up with it significantly reduced. Now when I do that I wake up and its still as bad as ever.

Cold or hot towels, never worked for me in the first place.

Do you drink a lot of caffeine, Prester_John? I had a friend who had splitting migraines and constantly complained to her doctor until he yelled at her (literally, I was there, LOL) "CUT CAFFEINE FROM YOUR DIET!!!" She drank about 4 of those HUGE mugs of caffeinated coffee a day and then about 5 cans of Mountain Dew (that didn't stop it COMPLETELY, but cut the severity of them--and frequency of them--down).

You may not be that bad, but maybe cut all caffeine from your diet. Take a nice hot bath with steam and turn the lights off, candles on and just relax. When I get really bad headaches, that helps me. But, I don't get migraines, so I may not be much help.

Ummm...here are some sites that talk about natural migraine remedies (Seraya, read it extremely carefully!!! Being preggers, you will not be able to take some of the stuff).

I used to get the migraines from hell.. still do but not nearly as often. What helped me was keeping a diary of what I ate every day and how I felt. Eventually I figured out what was triggering them. I have an 'allergy' to nuts and grapes. Also for some people dairy products can trigger them. Now its just my period that triggers one. Cut back on caffeine for sure as thats a major trigger. Also it can be change in air pressure etc... if it becomes to frequent and too severe you may need to consult a doctor as frequent migraines can mean other things. A lot of people dont really think much of them(then again I see a lot of people call a nasty headache a migraine) I wouldnt wish a migraine on my worst enemy The only thing to help calm it is laying in the dark with a heated towel over your eyes and make sure your in complete silence. Also Advil Migraine helps a bit... other then that the only good shit is gonna be from the doctor.

I get bad sinus headaches, so a temporary (very) solution is Tiger Balm, rubbed on my forehead. I get it from the drug or health store. I also do acupressure massage around my eyes, & back of neck. It sounds as if you may possibly need to get a prescription from a doctor. Good luck.

Peppermint oil is a great natural headache reliever, get some and rub it on your forehead, temples, back of your neck, wherever the pain is radiating from. Just keep it away from your eyes. That won't get rid of my migraines completely, but if I use that I can usually get rid of my migraines with some excedrin migraine. If they're especially bad, I'll do the peppermint oil, some excedrin, and go to sleep.

Have you looked into acupressure? I know most "alternative remedies" aren't as good as the drugs, but occasionally they do work. My parents were on a cruise with a woman whose seasickness was so bad she spent the first two days throwing up in her cabin, despite trying every medication they had. Finally they tried these acupressure bracelets and they worked so well she had a wonderful time eating and dancing the rest of the trip. I've heard of similar acupressure techniques working on migraine headaches... check the Yellow Pages, maybe, and see if there's someone who can help you?

On that note, consider acupuncture (yes, the tiny needles)/Chinese medicine. A friend just pointed me in that direction Re: alternative medicine.

Thanks for chiming in everyone. I appreciate it.

VG - My sleep patterns and rythems have been shot to hell from years of wacky bartending hours. Caffeine is a part of my day . Actually, I find I get bad headaches sometimes when I havent drank any caffiene in a while. I have been actually seeing about trying to cut it out entirely.

As for steam baths with candles, I dont think I would take the time to do all of that, unless there was someone else with me.

B - I think thats it. I miss the Left Elbow, and it hurts

    Peppermint oil, hmm...

As for accupuncture, I have always been leary of such holistic methods, being the great and natural skeptic I am. Has it worked for you guys on a regular basis?

I wish I knew the actual, physiological cause of them. I had a cat scan of my head a few years ago, and everything seemed normal. They scanned my head and found nothing .

My aunt has migraines & uses acupressure. My referral for acu-puncture has to do with an internal problem.
Were you ever in an accident where your neck was injured?....It could be that your headaches are from nerve damage.
See, I'll refrain from New Jersey jokes..(I love Jersey! LOL) but many people here in central CA have bad health problems from our polluted air. Asthma, headaches, sinus problems...do you live in a polluted area...?

Prester John, there's a big difference between acupuncture and acupressure. You'd probably have more success with the latter. I haven't heard of acupuncture producing anything but broken skin.

Are you sure it's migraines and not caffeine withdrawl??

I went through this for a whole week when I quit drinking caffeine (when I was working for the lawyers). Boy, was I a joy to be around then. But, my headaches were SOOOOOO bad, that I couldn't take light (my office stayed pretty dark) and I had to wear dark sunglasses on the way to work. It was horrible. But, after that first week, the painful headaches went away and it was just the mild headaches every once in a while. Drinking lots of water helped a bit (since it's a caffeine withdrawl and not an actual migraine).

    Just wondering.

I'm with VG on the caffeine withdrawals. I got myself a serious caffeine addiction on a trip in Spain once, and for weeks after (until I weened myself) I couldn't go a day without loads of caffeine or a nasty friggin headache. If it's caffeine withdawal, there's not much that will stop it other than more caffeine. Best way to get rid of the problem is to get off caffeine. And really, once you get off it, you'll find you really don't need it. Not only do I no longer need it to get through the day, but I do better without it - my energy doesn't go through extreme highs and lows, but is more steady throughout the day. I sleep better, and don't have the headaches.

VG - I wish that were THE answer. It is a factor sometimes, but I sometimes get them even when I am downing the caffiene. I think sometimes it may be caffiene withdrawl. Thats what drives me batty, that I dont think or am not sure its just one factor.

MM - knock on wood I havent had any head trauma or any severe allergies. I actually grew up in the farmlands of South Jersey, where the air is relatively clean, and I got headaches back then.

Yek - accupressure. Thats a new one on me. Never heard of it.

The one factor I am sure of that I get them during long stretches without decent sleep.

This may sound strange, but when was the last time you had an eye exam? I can always tell when it's about time to get my eyes checked again, becuase the headaches get extreme, and fairly frequent. After I get a new prescription, they disappear.

Actually I acupuncture works WONDERS. I used to get it for my migraines and I felt 100% better. I havnt gone in awhile because its just money i cant afford. I got it when I fucked up my neck and lower back... it does do great things for you. I havnt tried acupressure though I know a few people who say it works.

Well, too much caffeine will also give you a killer headache as well. Maybe cut out ALL caffeine for a month and see if the headaches are still bothering you. If you are still getting migraines, then it's got to be something else...but, yeah, definitely cut the caffeine. Too much will give you a headache and none at all will give you a headache...but once you're off of it...they should go away for good.

I've suffered from migraines since I was about 12 or 13. I'm currently taking Imitrex 100 mg tabs and I also have a Rx for the Imitrex injections. I use that if I get a migraine in my sleep and by the time the pain wakes me up the headache is too far along for the tabs. My nuerologist (sp) has also started me on Inderal, one of the beta-blockers, and that seems to be helping. I take that twice a day. You may also want to try a B2 vitamin routine, that's also been shown to work for some people (unfortunatly not for me). I believe you need to take at least 400 mg per day, 200 mg in the morning and 200 mg at night. I've always found a dark, quite room and a cool compress helpful. Don't take too many OTC drugs, they can cause a rebound headache. The narcotic pain killers do too. Good luck.

I just read an interesting article about migraines. I don't know how accurate the info is but it was interesting none the less.

    By JAMES CLOTHIER

PEOPLE who suffer migraines have a higher sex drive, research revealed yesterday.

Those who get the extreme headaches reported levels of sexual desire that were 20 per cent higher than normal, the study found.

Experts think it may mean that migraines are caused by the same brain chemical that controls human sex drive.

Men taking part in the study of 68 people reported levels of sexual desire that were 24 per cent higher than women.

But women with migraines only had a sex drive similar to men with tension headaches.

Timothy Houle, of Wake Forest University Medical School, North Carolina, said: “The results support the idea that migraine, as a syndrome, is associated with other common phenomena.

“Understanding of this link will help us to better understand the nature of migraine and perhaps lead to improved treatment.

“Sexual desire and migraine headaches may be influenced by the same brain chemical.”

UNfortunately sometimes there is not much they can do. I have a small benign tumor on my pineal gland and I get awful headaches. ALl they can do for it is give me percocet and narcotics, which I rarely use because I have to work a lot. Go to a specialist or a headache clinic...they might help. Sorry about your migraines, I can feel your pain..

Are you eating sugar? This may be an individual thing, but when my mother eats any kind of sugar-even fruits- she's completely knocked out with a killer migraine 2 days later.
    Something to try...

I plan on cutting down caffiene and see what happens. I think it is a factor, but not the only one. Cutting it down cant hurt, anyway.

Thanks much VG. You are alright, even though you are a pregnant Snor Lover.
