    Hypoglycemic?

After months of experiencing some of the symptoms for it I think I need to make an appointment for a doctor. I get numbness in my legs and hands after a few hours if not eating. It has gotten so bad that in some instances that I cant see colors or anything for that matter. My most recent was yesterday after eating some ramen (yes, Im lazy) and getting all dizzy to the point of stumbling around.

What can I expect when I go to the doctor? Im going to a clinic or something since I have no health insurance. Can I get my results while Im there? If you are hypoglycemic how do you deal with it at work?

    http://www.hypoglycemia.org/hypo_test.asp

This has symptoms listed in a fun quiz form.

Don't have ramen! Try to have a non carb or sugary snack, like a block of cheese or an egg so you're not riding the blood sugar roller coaster.

    Eat every 2-3 hours.

Hey thanks for the test. I it gave me a 51 which is to them a 40% chance I am no ok. Anything over 20 is considered a risk to them.
I also called the clinic and they couldnt tell me what they would do to me over the phone. How will they test me for it? They also said they had to order the test.

I use to have this problem as well. You should eat a small meal or snack every 3-4 hours. Preferably, something containing mostly protein and maybe a light carb. For instance, an egg scrambled with a piece of whole wheat toast. Or some tuna on top of a spinach salad. Or total cereal with 1 or 2 percent milk. Also it might not be a bad idea to invest in a blood glucose monitor to check your blood glucose level. These aren't as expensive as they use to be. I think the one I purchased last year was around 30 bucks. Normal blood glucose leves are between 80-120.

Oh my god, I got an 87... that is kinda scary. not suprised, though.
Anyways, your question of what to do at work:
personally, a carby snack only makes things worse for me. I go for straight up protein. Bring a container of peanuts, and have a handfull whenever you need. Good luck....

The doctor will probably give you a glucose tolerance test and do a blood test (I forget the name of it) that gives them an idea of what your blood sugar has been over the last 3 months.

As for what to do... you should definitely get a tester and monitor your blood sugar. You probably need to eat at least 6 times a day, protien or complex carbs. Don't drink soda or alcohol at work, and keep some peanuts on hand. When I was really hypoglycemic I would get dizzy just from being hot and active at work, so I would eat a handful of peanuts every hour or so to stay stable.

There is a book, never read it, but it sounds like it might help, Glycemic Index. I deal w/this by eating, as indicated, every couple of hours, or I'll start getting the shakes. Protein is very important also. I try not to eat wheat, I eat brown rice pasta, & regular brown rice.

    Thanks for all the advice.
So, I went out last night later about 10pm. Earlier that evening I ate a small apple. I was so nauseous after eating it but promised Id see my friend play. I put on a shirt and headed out the door. It keeping getting worse and worse until I arrived at my friends house. I completely threw up the apple that was barely digested.
I was hungry and ate a bananna with some kombucha. I was dizzy during the show and my vision was sorta blurry at times. After we got back I barfed up the bananna. How nice! *sarcasm* Basically, after puking I only ate:
1/2 can of starbucks iced coffee: 50 cal
Wheat toast with eggs: around 400cal
    Daily total: 450 cal
I really wasnt hunrgy all day.
Fuck, I wanted to lose a few pounds but not like this. Do you think this is normal for people who have glycemic problems?

edit: I made an appointment with the doctor for this Monday. I hope all goes well.

TM, I'm severely hypoglycemic and I can't eat apples or bananas at all. To do so causes my blood sugar to rise followed by a major crash complete with dizziness and blurry vision, just like you described.

Follow everyone's advice...when you have those symptoms head straight for the protein. Some nuts (I choose raw almonds) or some cheese should do it for you. Never let more than 4 hours go by without a meal.

Stay away from sugar and simple carbs like rice, pasta, white bread etc.

Good luck. Controlling my sugar feels like a full time job sometimes but the results are stable blood sugar and an added bonus....I don't need anti depressants or Xanax anymore.

I got 102 on the test, I think it's a good wake up call to get tested for hypoglycemia which I feel is more common than people realize.

I agree with Dylan..stabilizing blood sugar can help with anxiety/depression if you suffer from those. A good diet for hypo's IMO is Atkins. You'll stabilize your blood sugar and lose weight at the same time.

I got a 77. I try to eat every few hours but I always forget to bring food with me to work & sometimes get (low blood sugar-panic?) attacks at the end of the night. Has anyone else had those?

So, now I cant keep anything down but water. Besides, throwing up everything I eat Im fine; except I do get sweaty. I wish this was all over. I need to go make money. I'll be trying to get better for a few days. Thank you so much for the advice and see you guys later.
