    Smiley Ants Hate Baby Powder!

Heh.. Since it's the Season for ant invasions, our house has been swamped with the teeny little fucks. We don't see many inside the house, luckily, but there are literally millions outside, all around the perimeter of the place! We're planning on getting some pesticide stuff (Don't fret people, we have no pets to worry about harming, and since the Wangstas were evicted from their house during the Winter, I don't have to worry about their Pit Bulls coming into my yard. Everyone else keeps their pets indoors and in their fenced backyards, like it should be.) from Home Depot this weekend, but last night I'd had enough while I was sitting outside. The bastids were everywhere, and a ton were right by my front door.

I'd read a while back that they hate Talcum powder and won't cross it. I only had the plain old Johnson & Johnson Baby Powder (Cornstarch), so I decided to try that out. I took the big honkin thing of Powder and dumped it on the ants I saw, and in the cracks and crevices on the front step, and around the edges of the porch.

The ones that didn't die right away, ran like hell! They really DO hate it! I'm getting more baby powder tonight and I'm sprinkling it around the perimeter of our house tomorrow. They've got a gazillion nests around the house too, so I'll be dumping it on them too. It'll do until we get the good stuff this weekend.

Try it out if you have a problem with ants. You can line your inside doorways and windows with it too. Just a thin line will do. I can guarantee that they will not cross it.

Wanted to add here, that Black Pepper will work as well. But Baby Powder makes everything smell so nice! You can also try Cinnamon, but since that's sweet, it'll draw them in as far as they can go, even if they won't cross it.

I have heard if you draw a line with chalk, ants will not cross it.

try baits. I put out many ant baits and for 1 day there were a stream of ants to each bait and all the ants were gone or very sick in 1 or 2 days.

LOL DW.. I'm alright with it.. It will for real in a couple months anyway.. Why not get a jump on it? LOL

Slowpoke.. I've heard about the chalk too. Sadly, I had to go with what I had on hand, just the Powder. I had thrown away all of Delia's chalk when I cleaned her room last night.

Thanks, Goo. I'll get some baits for the inside, because the stuff we're getting this weekend, you can only use outside. It's kind of like Diazinon, or as close as you can get to it, because they outlawed Diazinon back in '04. That stuff rocked.

I hate bugs, in case no one noticed. In the first place we had here in TN, we had roaches. We demanded that they transfer our lease to a non-roach-infested place which they did after 5 months. So, ants are better than roaches I guess. But, I hate bugs. They can live if they're not near my house. Come to my door step or inside my house, your buggy asses are mine.

Ugh, ants....when winter ended in our old house, I walked out into the kitchen (we lived in a basement suite at the time) and found a fricking army of ants marching up the wall in a line. *shudders* We'd been having ants popping up all through the beginning of spring so when I saw about 50 of them, marching around like they owned the place (hah) I went asswild and sprayed them with Kaboom which is a corrosive spray T-T Now the animal activist in me felt bad, but ugh...........ants??? 50 goddamned ants crawling in a line up the wall by the kitchen counter??? No thanks. It killed those MFs and we moved out shortly after. Hah so if I'd known about baby powder earlier maybe I would feel a bit better about murdering all those ants.

I have no sympathy for bugs near or inside my house, so I get sick pleasure from watching them die or run away. It's a total rush.

Seriously though, if you don't mind your house smelling like a baby's tush, use the powder. It rocks!

I've used cinnamon to good success, but it's good to know this works too! Our first apartment in Australia had an awful ant problem - they were in the cereal, all over the pantry, and all over everywhere. We covered the threshholds and window ledges in cinnamon and we had no more ants. We also took to putting a little bit of sugar outside every few days - they would get the sugar from there and leave us alone. I do try to be a good neighbor.

I just use napalm. Keeps away unwanted bugs, ants, flies, cats, dogs and humans.

Wow, thanks for the advice. In Texas, we have fire ants in addition to ants. You'll have nasty welts for weeks if you step in one of their anthills. My boyfriend sometimes knocks the tops off the hills and pours liquid nitrogen down them, which works like a charm.

As far as the chalk thing goes, it will also run away roaches, water beetles, basically anything with jointed legs. It gets inside of their joints and kills them (the dust does) which may be why the baby powder works so well.

^^ I didn't think the chalk thing worked. I heard about it when I was a little kid and drew a chalk circle around an ant. It walked right across it! Maybe you need to make it really thick?

You have to press REALLY hard so that the chalk line is gritty - it's not the actual chalk that gets them, it's the dust getting into them.

Thanks for the tip Rhi. I was going to use borax powder but baby powder is cheaper. We have fire ants that are RED HOT to be in the house.

borate powder and diatamaceous earth are good, too. they kill all insects, by causing tiny abrasions in their exoskeletons and dehydrating them to death, and are nontoxic to humans and domestic animals (that is, those domestic animals that have internal skeletons, rather than exoskeletons. if you have pet cockroaches, it'll kill them.) you can buy them at hardware stores or gardening stores or at

^ Luckily, we have no more pet cockroaches. The house got fumigated. However, I think the pesticide remnants shaved a couple years off of my life. BLECH!

Yeah.. We're not dealing with Roaches anymore either, since moving to this place last September. Luckily. You know, they still can't rent that apartment because of the problem? It was like a horror movie in that place.. They weren't little roaches either. They were the huge fuckers that could carry a child off in the night.

What is really hard is making the chalk outlines of the ants' bodies for the police after you kill them.

I would guess that would be rather time consuming.

Wait until August, Rhi. Once summer gets going, you'll see some. And then when it starts to get chilly, all the roaches will come into your nice warm house. The kind you described are referred to as "wood roaches" and they are an inevitable fact of life in Memphis. That's one reason I don't live in Memphis anymore. I have a HORRIBLE phobia of them.

My cat ate one once right after they sprayed, and she had to have her stomach pumped. She got really sick from the insecticide and was having seizures. Fortunately she came through it all right... and every time she saw a wood roach after that, she'd come find me and lead me to it so I could kill it for her. THANKS, kitty!

Oh yeah, I remember from last year.. They were way way worse in Midtown though.

We see them here outside. There will occasionally be one on the exterior of the house, just chillin out. As soon as I flip on the light or open the door, they run off. They spray here every month as a precaution, and we haven't seen one in the house, luckily. We got this place in September of last year, and haven't seen even one in the house yet. ::knocks on wood::

Do you know where Zinnie's East in Midtown is? The first apartment we had was directly BEHIND that place. And the dumpster was right next to Delia's bedroom window. Needless to say, she never slept in her room because that is where they hit the hardest. Of course, it didn't help that Zinnie's would use the complex's dumpster when theirs was full. That meant we not only had to deal with the bugs---but the oh-so-pleasant scent of rotting crab legs too. That'll teach us for doing everything over the phone and through the mail when securing an apartment from RI. Ugh. We bitched enough though and they moved us here to Bartlett. That place like I said, was a total horror movie though. I'd kill two that were on the wall, then turn around, there'd be two more on the wall behind me. After 5 months of that, we'd made such a ruckus with the rental company that they finally moved us. They still haven't rented the old apartment because the problem is so bad. The bug guy that sprays here every month quivers in fear when I mention that place.. LOL

I hate bugs with a passion, but cockroaches are the worst! So you're not alone, girl.. LOL Those huge flying fuckers are downright scary.
