    Default Changing Hair Color

I've got a hair color question:

My daughter did her hair with Special Effects semi-permanant hair color. We bleached the hair first to make the color as bright and true as possible.

    Here's how it turned out:

Here's my question... It has now a faded shade of orange. If she wants to recolor it with permanant hair color (a gold blonde shade) should I restrip it or can I just dye over what's there?

it depends on the color, if you want to go a natural red just go over it if you do any shade of brown or even black it will have a slight red hue to it for a short time.

Bleaching it again will be very damaging, but probaly give you the best results. A blue based color will neutralize orange, but your results will probaly be a dishwater blonde at best. Using a gold or yellow based color will most likely just make her yellow-orange...

Depending on the condition of the hair now, if it's not too porus or crunchy, I would decolorize with no more than a 20 volume developer, let it do it's thing really slow, then recolor with a golden blonde demi-permanant. Her hair will be so porus by the time you re-bleach it, the demi will sink into her hair like a permanent color. Make sure the blonde color you choose is no lighter than a level 9. Again, since the hair is so porus, anything darker will make the hair look "muddy".

    wow thats bright lol awsome!

i woundnt go blonde at all it will reack her hair so so much and will take alot of bleach to get that colour out .. red grabs on and stays in for ages.. you will find it really hard to get it the colour she wants it,, your best of going darker

How about going dark brown/black over the red with leaving a few chunks of the red? I think it would be cool looking but not overly "punk". I did my hair this way except I have pink chunks over dark brown. I've had very good responses so far! It looks more nouveau "model" rather than freaky-punk.

It's not nearly as bright red anymore and she's set on blonde. I think i'm just going to have her grow it out a bit first and get it re-cut THEN we can worry about color. I swear she's changed the color more times than I can count.

I do appreciate all the feedback though thanks! I kinda figured she'd either have to go darker or suck it up and get it stripped. Thankfully she has hair like mine, it can take amazing chemical abuse and still look ok afterwards so even if she does decide to go the color strip route she should be all right.

Hmmm...I would definitely try that. /\

My mom's friend's daughter did this exact same thing, Sirona. Bleached out her hair and went the red route. She got tired of it and bleached it out and went "blonde". Bad idea. I don't know exactly what she did, but it looked messed up. Looked ashen in some places and greenish in others. Weird. She ended up having to go to a colorist and having them fix it. Her hair looked like straw for months and broke off easily (too much processing). I would say to definitely grow it out a bit, cut and re-do.

OOooo thanks smartcookie, i'll give it a shot.

VenusGoddess yup i've had the whole bad home color thing happen to me in the past. Fortunately like I said it's semi-perm which makes it a lot easier to pull out. I do know red in general is the worst to get out. I did mine perm. color bright orange/copper/red (feel free to laugh at the picture) and when I wanted it out I had to strip my hair. Twice. Did I mention it was down to my ass? LOL, aaaanyhow, ya. She just needs to learn some sort of patience and let it grow out some and cut off as much as she can.

Gratuitous picture for laughing at purposes:

That isn't laughing at material. That's a cute picture. Is your hair naturally blonde? I could see that looking best on you.

And your daughter has really pretty eyes!
