What He Does for a Living

This has always been an innocent habit of mine. I never thought of it any other way until one girl I worked with told me that it was rude to ask customers their occupation. She said it was basically a subtle way of asking how much $$$ he has. Which I don't agree with at all.

    1) I think it's a great conversation starter

2)He obviously knows what you do, so why shouldn't you vice versa?

    3) Careers are a huge part of peoples lives...if you don't know what they do, than you don't know much about them at all.

4)Some jobs you make a million, while others with the same job are flat broke...not they would be if they're in a club, but you never now with the crazies these days.

I personally like to learn about people, like how they got started, how they became successful. That's mainly why I ask. I find a lot of peoples stories really inspiring. Sure, my job is fun now...but won't be able to do this forever.
I would never intentionally insult a customer. Actually every time I ask their occupation they don't seem uncomforatable talking about it at all.
So what do you think? Is it rude to ask?

I don't bring up work unless they do first. They come to the club to escape, not to think about work some more.

If they bring up that they have to work on a weekend, or that they just got off work, or whatever, rather than asking what they do, I ask if they enjoy their job. That way they can decide how much they want to say, rather than either saying they aren't comfy telling you or whatever.

I don't particularly enjoy my job, but that doesn't mean it's gonna ruin my good time if someone asks me what I do. It's a normal question to ask someone that you don't know very well.

Besides - better way to tell if he spends his money is ask what he does for fun. Good ones are golf, boating, lacrosse, horseback riding, etc.

    LOL. Just my two cents.

Your co-worker is right. You may not see it that way but the customers do.

I could even go into a rant about how only in the US is it really considered an acceptable conversation starter to ask what someone does for a living - in reality, whether consciously or not, it is a way of sizing people up, of putting them into a category based on something other than their personalities and the way they behave. We draw conclusions about people based on their professions. I dare anyone to claim they don't - think about it and be totally honest. In other cultures it is considered socially rude to ask people that. No matter how you slice it, you may think it's perfectly acceptable to ask someone what they "do", but it is never perfectly innocent.

I see both points. I stopped asking customers period for a while. I've never used it as a "conversation starter". Just casual conversation. The reason I posted this question is because I read the article "How to Own a Customer" in the paragraph "Can't think of anything to talk about?" It's the second sentence. http://www.stripperweb.com/forum/article.php?a=20

That's an OLD article reposted from zbone. Can't take everything those things say to heart. I can't tell you how many guys have said, on this very site, how they DON'T like being asked what they do, because it gives the impression you're trying to see how much money they have - ie, ruins their fantasy. Sure, there will be guys who will WANT to tell you, and it's generally because they're bullshitting but ALWAYS because they want you to look all wide-eyed and tell them how important / smart / etc they must be. Those guys will OFFER the info to you.

So to avoid turning many guys off, and to discern which ones badly need their egos stroked, your best bet is to NOT ask. The needy ones will tell you anyway, and the ones who want to avoid the conversation won't be offended.

I don't like asking guys what they do either. Unless they seem eager to tell me, I don't. Asking them if they enjoy their job, is a good one.

Have you ever gone shopping for an expensive item (like a car) and you were asked what you did? Doesn't it make you feel pressured?

I hate being asked that. it makes me uncomfortable.

I'm no expert in foreign cultures other than French... there it is not considered rude, it is a normal part of casual conversation.

In what cultures is it considered rude?
