working through the pain and other questions

Okay, so I finally set out a very ambitious workout plan for myself. After ONE class (yes I am pathetic) I am completely shakey and in pain. I knew to expect this, but my question is, should I take a couple of tylenol before class so that I can actually participate, or will I end up injuring myself worse that way? And secondly, am I better off doing three days of cardio class and two of muscle training, or vice versa? I would say my issue is flabby abs and back, but I want to get the most effective workout possible and I heard somewhere that repetetive workout schedules are counter-productive. Any help is much appreciated, as I'm a workout newb, and feel like the new kid at school everytime I step in the place

it's more effective to give your muscles rest! When they repair, that's when the magic happens

You can do 2-3 times a week of weight training, but don't work the same muscles more than once a week. If you have flabby abs and back, diet and cardio would be more effective for targeting that problem.

Give L-Carnitine a try. Not only does it help burn fat but, it'll give you the extra energy to really be able to go hard during workouts. To strength your abs and back try pilates or yoga 2 or 3 times a week along with weight training. Also stretching will help ease the muscle pain and tension you're feeling. Remember drink lots of water, dehydration slows your metabolism by more than 3% and keeps you from getting optimum results. Try adding 3 servings of green veggies to your diet along with a serving of almonds , both have been proven to reduce abdominal fat.

Well said. Rest is half of your workout; if you fail to rest, your workouts will become ineffective and you'll be prone to the results of overtraining.

    L-Carnitine is good, too.

    Simple and effective.

I weight train more times per week, but focused more. And only because I think I'm addicted :/ But I like it, it breaks up my day and makes me feel energized. So if frequency is a must, see someone about getting on a plan. Focus on the progress, and the goal will come naturally.

Thanks for the info guys. Unfortunately L-Carnitine is only available in Canada by prescription, and can run up to 140 bucks a bottle! eek!

I did a yoga class today. My GOD did it feel good. I'm still in a lot of pain, but I find that it only effects me when I'm doing everyday stuff like walking down stairs...after I've warmed up my muscles, I'm alright.

So am I working out too much or too little? A friend of mine scoffed today when I said I was 'only' doing 1 hour a day 5 days a week, but you guys are saying rest is key. Am I better off doing more hours a day, and less days a week?

You have to do what is best for your body. And, honestly, people who work out for more than an hour are either working well below their target rate or are completely addicted to working out.

When I was at the top of my game, I still only spent no more than a hour and 15 per session. I was in kick ass shape. But, exercising is only part of the equation. If you're eating for shit, you'll have to spend more time in the gym. If you eat a healthy/controlled diet, you'll have to spend less time in the gym.

In the end, you have to listen to your body and do what is best for it.

What is L-Carnitine? Is it like Tonalin?

I'd be interested to know if anyone who was taking Tonalin a year or two ago is still on it, and what the effects have been...

I have been alternating weight training classes with pilates and yoga. It has really helped to keep me from getting too sore from the strength classes. I do 2-3 days of strength training each week, and 3-4 days of pilates/yoga. I usually do pole work, treadmill, eliptical, or bike for cardio 2-3 times per week as well.

If you are finding you are extremely sore after a class, the next time just lower your weights down a bit. Instead of 5 & 10 pound weights, just use 3 & 5 until you can at least lift your arms the next day. I'm weird, but I love the feeling of not being able to lift yourself off the toilet because your legs/butt are too sore!

I LOVE pilates/yoga, it's really helped to build a strong core, keep my muscles stretched, as well as help me relax. As I'm sure you found, it's also great for building strength in your back as well. I think too many people focus on building strong abs, without realizing their back also needs to be strong as well.
