Default A Giant Flying Cockroach Attacked Me!

I was sitting on my coach at one AM reading when I noticed something attract my cat's attention. I knew it was a vermin of some sort but it was a GIGANTIC FOUR INCH LONG FLYING ROACH!!!!!!!!!

Okay, so you Texas and Florida folks call these things "Palmetto Bugs" but they are not supposed to be in New York City! The damn thing was as fast as a Cheetah and I couldn't kill it before it ran and hid. Now I live in fear that it's going to jump out at me and land in my hair or crawl inside my mouth while I'm sleeping. UGH!
    I'm so skeeved!

Eww I hate bugs. I almost killed my family when I was fourteen because a roach got in our car, and then my hair while we were driving through Florida. I lost my mind and the car spun around because my dad thought i was seizuring. It's half the reason I love winters here. No bugs at all.

I feel for you. My worst nightmares involve insects. Hopefully your cat caught it? Some of them are pretty good bug hunters.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh SC! Now I can't stop itching! I killed many of those fucks in the old apartment we had. I even snapped a picture of one. He was a fighter. Quick as a bullet, darting down the hallway, with me chasing him, spraying him with Raid. I finally cornered him in the bedroom and drowned him with Raid.

I don't think I could sleep if I knew there was one hiding out. LOL

I even posted this pic in the pet thread back then.. Hahaha

The thing was so big and so fast, even the cat wasn't sure what to do.

It must be a regional term. In Vegas we call flying roaches "pigeons."

smartcookie, my family moved from NYC to the 'burbs back in 1975 because of the giant flying roaches. I have a vivid memory of my mother screaming at the top of her lungs in the middle of the night while my dad chased a flying roach around their bedroom. Then, we came home late one night and saw a line of them marching single-file into the building through a drainpipe. I think my Mom started looking for an apartment in Westchester the next day.

We still had roaches in Westchester, but they were much smaller, at least.

Having just taken a kick-ass General Entomology class, I gotta say I'm feeling much friendlier toward bugs these days. I even have one of these giant flying things in my insect collection--found it half-dead in the bathroom of the science building at school, popped it in alcohol to kill it and then pinned it.

It's weird that we hate roaches so much, since they really don't do anything bad to us (don't bite or sting or carry disease or anything). Still, though, they skeeve me more than just about any other crunchy, leggy creature. Though I'm not fond of earwigs. Or cicadas--my cats used to bring those into the house and they'd totally freak me out.

hopefully your cat will pull its weight and take care of the problem.

I still have bad memories of an event that happened over ten years ago. I was laying in some sand. It wasn't even a beach. It was a beach voleyball court that wasn't being used. And I felt something itchy in my shirt but I just let it go. Hours later it was itching again and I reached up my shirt and it was one of those nasty fuckers.

It was just chillin there all that time. UGH!

Although roaches don't carry disease, don't they contribute allergies, asthma and lung problems? Also I read if their droppings get in your food it can cause food poison.

I've lived in Texas. I've lived in Florida. But I will never join the ranks of those who will laugh knowingly and tell you "Oh, that's not a roach! It's a Palmetto Bug", like it's somehow better in some way.

    Bullshit...

They are huge, gigantic, nasty fucking ROACHES!

They must be killed, immediately and mercilessly--if necessary in nasty ways.

I'm the life-loving, gentle sort that will grab a giant dragonfly by the wing and put it outside, even if it tries to bite me in the process. I'll kill a big hornet if I think it might sting me, but there is no viciousness in the process.

With ROACHES, it's different. Any and all roaches that come anywhere near me must DIE. All weapons at my disposal will be used: shoes, rocks, flamethrowers, whatever it takes.

Cats, much as I love them, aren't really much good with them. They want to play with them, and only if they fly. Otherwise they're pretty useless, really.

Give them a pretty bird or a cool little lizard, and Ghengis Khan couldn't be more relentless or less pleasant--but a ROACH, on the other hand, and they're "Hey dad, it's one of those stupid boring bugs you hate so much, I'm going to take a nap now."

Thanks a lot, no KittieCuisine for you tonight, you're eating that dry shit.

I have seen a pretty big roach in Chicago, on the South Side, in the sub-sub-basement of an enormous hospital, taking some stuff down to the incinerator room when I worked there (don't even ask what the job was). Chicago did have some pretty impressive roaches, but Texas and Florida are worse.

OMG, I would kill myself if I saw one of those in my house. I used to freak out when grasshoppers crept in the house.

we just call them roaches in Texas AFAIK.

I thought the smaller ones were called 'german cockroaches'?

They have to die, as well, but it's not quite as serious a matter. The giant ones piss me off--I'll throw furniture aside to get at them, lol...

Myrtle, shmyrtle--they don't have the monsters we have down here, lol...

There's actually a whole website about these fuckers--a girlfriend I had who was going to visit me here went on there one night, to prepare herself.

I forget the address, but it was pretty funny, she read me some classic excerpts on the phone.

yup, it's true. if you see one...there are hundreds more. you just want to be sure not to leave any food..including crumbs out. keep your kitchen drawers clear of crumbs and seal ALL containers tight (especially bread..better keep that in the fridge). also keep your cups/glasses turned upside down so they don't crawl on the inside of them.

when i lived in the south, i remember planting mums around the pine trees..supposedly they hate mums. there are also other flowers/plants you can put in your house to help keep them at bay.. also, keep those roach motels fresh!

damn, i'm sooo glad i live up north now! lol

That's it. I'm moving back to San Francisco, where the worst we had was an occasional small black spider.

Well, if you live in an apartment building, seeing one roach doesn't mean there's 100 in your own apartment. They might be staying with the guy down the hall, and just dropping by to see what's up.

In Florida and Texas, the gigantic flying roaches live outside, and occasionally get in almost by accident--they're not too bright. Which does nothing to stop me from KILLING them.

I don't know if that helps any...

That's why in Okinawa, people encourage geckos to hang around the homes. The first time you see one of those flying roaches when you come in at night and turn on the light, it makes you want to pack a sidearm.
