    Default Pregnant friend

Not sure if this is in the right section but my best friend just told me shes pregnant and i wanna buy her a book on pregnancy and maybe some maternity wear. Shes only 23 and shes scared shes gonna be stuck in dowdy maternity dresses, does anyone know any god literature and/or clothing lines for young pregnant women??
Also, should you stop colouring your hair when your pregnant or is that a myth??

You can get her "What To Expect When You're Expecting", by Heidi Murkoff, Arlene Eisenberg, & Sandee Hathaway, OR, you can go with "Your Pregnancy Week By Week", by Glade B. Curtis. I have both books, but I honestly like the second one better. It's more detailed because it goes by the week.

If you feel comfortable with shooting me an address, I have a brand new copy of "What To Expect..." that I purchased at the beginning of my pregnancy. I've since found my old copy and I use that. So the new one is just collecting dust. I'll give it to you if you want.

As for clothes, check out Motherhood Maternity. They normally have some good sales.

Honestly though---You can do what I did... Go to thrift stores. Maternity clothes are so damn expensive, and you only need to wear them for a few months. I went to Motherhood a few months ago and got 1 pair of jeans, and 3 shirts. Cost me $60. That weekend, I went to the Goodwill Thrift Store.. Found 1 pair of jeans, 2 pairs of shorts, and 3 shirts. Wanna know how much I spent? A whopping $21 for all of it. They were all in brand-new condition too. Granted, you'll have to sift through the racks since most don't have a Maternity section, but they're there.

Just give them a good washing and they'll be good to go.

As for the coloring your hair, it used to be considered dangerous because of certain chemicals used in the dyes. But, now I believe they're safe. She might want to confirm that with her doctor though. I don't know from personal experience because I've never colored my hair, but my Sister didn't stop coloring hers when she was pregnant.

Let me know about the book. It's yours if you want it.

I agree, what to expect is a good book choice.

I am 8 months pregnant, and I found tons of tops and dresses at forever 21 that fit fine over my belly, just look for things that are longer, with a little give to the material. Maybe also go up a size. The cool thing is I bought them when I barely started showing (like in may) and now that I have a baby belly, they look way cuter. I also spent a lot less than I would have at Motherhood.

For pants and shorts, target is good. Their maternity jeans fit me better than motherhood, target has numerical sizes, motherhood only has small med large ect. and is a bit cheaper.

I also agree that the goodwill is awesome, but you do have to search for what you want. I found tons of very new condition stuff from motherhood and liz lange maternity there, really cheap!

ooh and I colored my hair, but my hair that is naturally a ashy/sandy blonde will not hold chocolaty brown hair color in it for the life of me. I tried twice, and it keeps fading to a muddy mess. My stylist said the extra hormones effect some women like that and after birth, it should balance out enough to take the color fine.

They say not to dye it during the first trimester though, my doctor said it was ok, but I still waited. He warned me of the fumes that may trigger the horrible never ending morning sickness.

Oh oh! And if you want to get her a really good gift... Get her a ! It is the greatest thing ever, no pregnant woman should be without one. It adds time to your regular clothes, so you can wear them longer. It just fits right over the top of the pants, so you don't have to worry about zipping, buttoning, snapping, anything. Holds it all in place and supports the growing belly.

    She'll thank you for it!

With all the babydoll and tunic tops that are en vogue again (god, the 80's and 90's are coming back to haunt me), that cuts down on having to buy maternity shirts.

I love my bella band. Not only does it make your regular clothes last longer, but it also makes it easier to wear maternity clothes a little earlier (makes the fit smooth over the belly).

I had to get a large everything...and most of it is way to big...but my belly usually gets HUGE (well, it did with Makayla...I had everything in Medium and by the end of my pregnancy, I had cut into the elasticized panels and expanded them) so I'm planning on the same thing now. Buy everything big. You won't believe how much a belly can stretch!!

I do the thrift stores too. I spent $600 on maternity clothes for Makayla...wore them for 6 months and then they went into storage (I was back into my regular clothes 10-12 days after I had her). I gave them away a while ago, so this time...I've got a whole new "maternity" wardrobe, but most of it is Thrift store stuff. I've got 5 pairs of pants/jeans, 4 pairs of shorts, 10 blouses/t-shirts, 1 fancy dress, and 1 "lounge" dress, 4 sweaters and 1 coat (baby due in December) and I spent a TOTAL of $89. I have more clothes this time than I did with Makayla. The best thing about Maternity clothes, is that they are usually in mint condition. I mean, people only usually wear them for no more than 6-9 months.

I thought the "What to Expect When You're Expecting" book was good. Just don't follow the "eating guide". It's waaaaaay too much food and if she ate like that everyday, she'd probably be fucking huge. Another book I highly recommend is "Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way" (forgot the authors). It's about giving birth with no drugs, etc...but even if she does have a c-section/epidural, whatever...the book is really detailed about the stages of labor. And, I know for myself...having read and re-read that book, I felt much better knowing what was going to happen. I recommend it more for the labor signs, etc. Very helpful.

That's all I can think of right now.

As previously said,w ith all the empire waist tops and tunics in style, shirts are a breeze. try Ross for cheap clothes...they have name brand clothes, cheap (I.E. Macy's carried DKNY, and they ahd a jacket for $80...Ross had the same jacket for 22/50) and they have a good maternity/bra section as well

I was planning on taking a trip to Barnes & Noble this week so i will definitely be looking out for the the books you ladies mentioned... and i most def need to purchase the bella band they will be a life saver!

Pole kitten Target also have a good range of maternity wear for cheap prices. Like others have said here with the latest fashion trends your friend need not worry about maternity clothes too much... i don't plan on buying maternity clothes unless i get real HUGE and even if i do, maternity clothes are not unflattering and dowdy like they used to be.

    You're very welcome, PK

I'm glad I could help and that it's going to good use. I'd hate to see it wasted just sitting here. I think the post office said 4-9 days, and it'll go out on Monday.

If I can think of anything else to add, I'll post it..

The Bella Band rocks, I wish I would have gotten one right away. I also highly recommed the book Rhi mentioned the Pregnancy Week by Week. I loved looking at it thinking of how big my baby was at that time. And the best maternity clothes I bought were just regular clothes that were longer. I never did buy any official maternity wear - all too expensive and hard to find cute stuff.

As she gets farthur along I also recommend books about labor. She won't be as interested in it probably at the beginning. But I LOVED knowing what my body was doing while I was in labor. It makes it not so scary when you are really educated.

Anyway, it's sweet you're helping her out. I hope she has a great pregnancy. Make sure she does some pampering too!!!! I got my highlites done twice. Once in my second trimester and once right before my due date, because I knew it'd be a while til I had the chance again! I also had a few pregnancy massages and facials. That was great.

LOL Seraya.. You can always shoot me your addy too. I'll keep it handy for after the baby's born. I'll get getting rid of all my Maternity clothes, books, and other various pregnant stuff I have, because the tubes are getting tied when he's born, so we're done! And it'll be nice to know they'll get more use.

I have only about 9 weeks to go until the C-Section (EEK! Time's flying!)

So it won't be long at all til you get a nice big package full of stuff.. LOL

Old Navy also carries a line of maternity wear for reasonable prices. Not all stores have the maternity line, so it's best to call first...or order online.
