    Default Probelm area

I fell out of my workout routine and just got back into it again. I always seem to tone my upper body pretty easily but not so much down below. My thighs never seem to tone up at all. I'm doing 45 minutes of cardio on the treadmill and do weight training. I'm also having trouble getting my waist down, I still have the "muffin top" in some clothes.

Any suggestions for exercise for thighs and waist areas?

I think these are the biggest problems areas for most women. I don't know how much truth there is to this for other women but I noticed when I stop taking the pill I lost almost 2 inches in my thighs instantly. I don't know if you are even on the pill but I just noticed it makes me gain fat in areas where I am typically slim. I think the waist is a never ending battle for just about all of us over 23 or ladies with children. Pilates is great for developing a strong core though. I know I am more shapely and my abs are more cut because of pilates.

I have the same problem. I keep going to the gym and busting my ass and eating right so hopefully it will pay off one day.

Try lowering your sugar and simple carb intake. It works wonders for losing excess body fat (do this in addition to your workouts).

Pilates is the only thing I've found to get rid of my stomach. Also works wonders on the butt/thighs. I do winsor pilates, bought it online. Good stuff.

huh. hardcore cardio is the only thing that does it for me. Mostly the elliptical. And the personal trainer at the gym says that the first twenty minutes burns up your carb stores, and after that it starts digging into the fat. Now, I know some people think that a lot of cardio is bad for you, but honestly, it all depends on you. I do 2-3 hours at a time. If I'm feeling wimpy, I'll do an hour to an hour and a half. This I'll do either every day if I'm on the light end, or every two to three days if I'm on the heavy end. I notice that my love handles from before faded pretty quickly working out this consistently, and this time around I'm just working on my stomach and my legs...and I've noticed a difference, though the scale only says I'm about 5 pounds down.

Don't completely cut out the carbs, you still need a fifty-fifty ratio of carbs to protein, but if you were to, say, do a 40-60 ratio of carbs to protein, that shouldn't be too bad. I tend to go top heavy on the protein whenever possible because I know that I'm not militant about my diet so the carbs will slip in there whenever.

Also, target your caloric intake to about 1100 (typical women need 1600, so 1100 should burn about one pound a week on its own.) But if you're going hardcore exercising, allow yourself more, just be smart about it. And on light days, stick to the 1100 c.

I am a fitness competitor and have a HUGE knowledge base on exercise and diet. Your problem with your lower body is that women hold fat in the hips, thighs, butt areas where men hold it in the abdominal region.

You have to have a clean diet of lean protein, natural carbs, and fruits and veggies. Eat 6 meals a day (ever 2-3 hours). Weight train, but make sure you are using heavy weights. The best exercises for butt, hips, and thighs are Full squats, walking lunges, straight leg deadlifts.

The above link is a great resource on the proper forms of dieting and training. Just go to the "stickies" and read them before you ask questions. The drama on that board is pretty rediculous here lately. HTH!

Due to the major differences as kotah noted, I can't offer much help, however what worked for me dropping from 15%-9% BF was ALL-OUT-CARDIO.

It is true that once your body reaches it's optimum heart rate (on average takes about 15 minutes into most typical cardio routines) that's when it starts to burn off your body's fat storage. But you can't spot reduce fat. As VenusGoddess has mentioned, you need to make sure your body isn't feeding off of itself and is using fat storage. I've read through sources that this can be most effective by matching your diet to HIGHER caloric intake on a more healthy basis (2200 - 2800) while doing ALL-OUT cardio (Sprints) And High Intensity cardio. TO GAIN MUSCLE AND LOSE FAT YOUR DIET HAS TO BE PRECISE

I may be completely wrong being I lack hips, (but damn I'd make a sexy chick) but here's my suggestion. For me to achieve an optimal cardio workout on the things like the eliptical (very popular) bike (hurts teh bunz) or just jogging, I need time I just plainly don't have.

After every work out, weight training whatever, do 5 minutes of ALL-OUT CARDIO. This is achieved by something similar to this example...Do a short 3 minute jog to prepare your body. Then get a stop watch. Stop. then RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN for 30 seconds. Then rest for 30 seconds. Repeat this for 5 minutes.

If you're not into all out cardio (also known as HIIT) then do your standard run routine in the morning before breakfast.

I run on average 15-18 miles when I actually go. It's a 2-3 hour endevour and I love it. But I only do this twice a week now... wednesdays is distance, sundays is fun. When I run, I normally listen to imagination music and throw some agility into my runs to see how far I can go. It's neat, and god bless my superhero imagination. Every run is like a movie to me.

Here are some suggestive alternative links.

Again, male focus, but I think the idea is the same. HIIT cardio did it for me anyways. Still does.

HIIT is great! You don't have to do it daily. 3x/week is all that is really needed.

If you are doing weights and not noticing much change in your thighs, etc it may be because you are not using high enough weights. My clients used to BALK when I told them that they should be able to do a squat with AT LEAST as much weight as they are. If you weigh 120 pounds and are squatting 45 pounds. Don't expect to see much change. This doesn't mean that you should pile 120 pounds on the squat machine and give it a go...but it should be your goal.

For me, I started out squatting 45 pounds...and when I was in top shape, I was squatting 115 pounds on 12 reps. Your leg muscles are some of the strongest muscles in your body...the enable you to motor yourself around...move your bodyweight upstairs, downstairs, to sitting/standing positions...in other words if you want defined thighs (quads/hamstrings) you've got to blast them. No more girly weights.

And, nutrition is so important. If you think you're eating clean now...then keep a journal of every single thing you put in your mouth. Everything. You'd probably be surprised at the little things that are sabotaging your diet.

    you damn sure would!

My trainer told me today I need to do more cardio. I hate cardio. But then I hate going to the gym too which is why I have a trainer. I felt pretty good today after she made me do more cardio. And I've been pretty good about avoiding the cookies (always an evil temptation) at work and eating better.

It's hard to get your body to let go of the places it wants to hold onto the fat.

You said your key areas for toning were your love handles and thighs...

In my yoga class today the instructor had us do side planks to target toning the love handles. It defintely burned!

But I agree, you'll need to up your cardio to see real results. I've been doing pilates 3-4 times a week for the last 2 months and can tell my abs are getting extremely strong. Now I just need to burn off this extra layer of flab to show off my 6-pack in the making!

Walking lunges are great for toning your thighs. I just have to follow my own advice. Now that my abs are getting back in shape, it's time to work on trimming the thighs!
