    Default Naval Infection

How the hell did it happen?! I've had my belly ring for FIVE years! I thought it was completely closed up! How does something completely closed up get infected? Ugh, so I took it out last night... No big deal, right? I've taken it out for longer... Well, part of it closed up! Just a fraction of an inch of skin... Ima make a small cut with a knife and push it through... Uughhh... I don't care if it's 830am... Ima take a shot first! Owwie.

Ow!!! Be careful with self reopening like that. Ow ow...

And if it keeps up with the infection, sea salt in a shot glass with hot water. Soak the area a lot with that. Should draw out the infection.

okay, that wasn't so bad, it was all scar tissue... It's all red and angry at me, now. Whatever... it's better than getting it repeirced. THAT hurt!

What was recommended to me, for naval infection, is a liquid soap avail. in drugstore, called Hybaclense. It's in a aqua colored bottle, used by surgeons. Also try Bactene, or Tea tree oil.

Does getting your bellybutton really hurt as horribly as I've heard? I was considering getting mine pierced, but now I'm not so sure...

in the future: never take out an infected piercing. the opening allows the infection to "escape" from the body. taking the jewelry out lets the skin close up and the infection can become trapped in your body (and thusly the bacteria continue to grow). even old healed up piercings can get infected. the usual reason is that, sometimes when you change the jewelry or even move your existing jewelry around (turning it, etc) you can get a small tear or cut in your skin. this can be because the jewelry has a small nick in it (even one you can't see) or because the skin around your piercing is very tight and rips a bit. then, of course, when you touch the jewelry, you transfer whatever germs/dirt you had on your fingers to the jewelry and the "wound", which causes the infection. in the future, when you change your jewlery or mess with your existing one, wash your hands and change the jewelry very slowly. usually the little rings that allow the end of the piercing to screw into the bead or clasp are the culprits that tear your skin. lathering up your piercing a bit with warm soapy water (using a non fragrance mild soap is always best) will help it glide in better and prevent damage.

right now i would use a 50/50 bactine and water mix 2 times a day on the piercing after washing it with the soap i described (regular orange dial works). avoid touching it at other times. you can use other mild cleaners antiseptics rather than the bactine, but don't do whatever you choose more than 2 times a day. too much cleaning can cause damage as well. i wouldnt worry about it too much unless the redness continues for more than a couple days, or gets worse. also, if you have any extreame pain (more than mild discomfort) or start to feel any "heat" surrounding it, you might want to see a doctor. for the most part though, you can clear it up on your own.

once it's healed i recommed using tea tree oil (as someone mentioned) to help get rid of the scar tissue. you can buy little bottles of it at sallys beauty supply, if they have one near you.

Next time it closes up look at which side is still open. Mines partly closed up 5times in the 3yrs i've had it! The trick is to apply a hot compress on it to kind of soak the fragile scar tissue. Normally it will start closing from either the bottom or the top. Just slowly push it through the open side. Normally it doesn't take an auctual repiercining to open it.

Yours hurt to have done? Mine didn't hurt at all, I didn't even know they'd done it lol. I just kept sitting there thinking "geez I wish they'd do it already".

Anyhow, navel pierces are notorious for infection and slow healing. Mine got infected about a year after it was done. I ended up needed a prescription for Keflex after the ususal sea salt soaks and hybiclense (sp?) routine failed.

It's in a place where there is a lot of wear and tear, so to speak.

Sea salt soaks should help. I pierced mine about 12 years ago and have never had a problem except once in the very beginning. Very warm water with the salt a few times a day should make it feel better and help to get all the nasty stuff to come out. Its what I've done with all my piercings when I had them done. It helps the healing process.
