    Default Cancelling AOL

Oh man - I simply closed the credit card accout when I had it. When they whined I told em I was going to sue em. They left me alone after that.

Here is another guy's experience on the phone. Awesome.

It's like pulling teeth to get them to cancel someone. I attemped to cancel my account for about 2 years. Their answer? They'd just keep giving me more and more free months (2 or 3 at a time). I'd repeat the process when it was going to run out, because I didn't want it, and I wasn't going to continue to pay for it.

They finally cancelled my account when I switched phone numbers (I was using that billing method). Since they couldn't access it anymore, they couldn't bill me. Heh.

Oh, god, been there, done that. I signed up for AOL because I had to have internet service immediately and so I got the free month. I basically had to curse the damn guy out on the phone to get him to cancel it. I just told him the service sucked and nothing he could say would keep me from canceling and to CANCEL IT! It was awful.

Heh my mom and I had AOL for a month... trying to cancle it was nearly impossible. It took us cancling the credit card to get rid of it then they kept harassing us... ugh AOL sucks.

You know what's funny? When I bought my computer, I got 6 months of free AOL with it. I continued to use AOL after the free 6 months for about a year, and then I decided to cancel it. I had absolutely no problems cancelling-the lady on the phone didn't give me a hard time about it at all. I must've gotten one of the rare nice AOL customer service reps, because I've heard many horror stories from different people that it was almost impossible to cancel AOL when they called. The phone call Deogol posted was just horrible. That AOL rep should've gotten fired. What a douchebag.

^ The reason you had so little trouble is that AOL suffered a class action lawsuit because of their deceptive cancellation procedures.

Yep AOL sucks big time! I had 'em for a few months, and have been trying to cancel ever since. It's been about a year now. Always excuses or some other bs.

Like Rhiannon said above, I had free internet service through AOL for like four years because they kept giving me free trial months. I did it on purpose though; I called each time it was about to run out and said I wanted to cancel but I knew they were going to extend my free trial.

I've never dealt with them myself. I got enough bad feedback on them to know that I wouldn't touch them with a 10 foot pole.

Their product *sucks*! They try so hard to avoid cancellations, simply because they have nothing to offer and when it comes down to it, everyone would leave if they let them!

    Fuck those asshats!!

I carry an AOL disc with me on the road to use when I get stuck at a hotel with no high speed Internet (rare, but it still happens). I sign up, use the service for however long I need it and when I get home I call and cancel it. I've done this about half a dozen times over the last couple of years.

I've never been able to pull it of without having to resort to cursing and yelling at the AOL phone rep but hey, I don't have a problem with that.

When I tried to leave AOL they found me at the movie theater with another girl and beat her up, keyed my car, egged my house, burnt "Bastard" into my front lawn, and threw all my junk in the dumpster. Embarassing.

Did you know that the AOL execs offered to provide all those who tried to leave 6 free months post cancellation as a form of settlement? It's out there. I nearly busted a gut. They do however HAVE TO REFUND up to 6 months of your usage to your card unless they can prove you logged in via dialup/tcp-ip.

Yes I still have clients that have OC-12 connections in their companies yet still prefer to run AOL.

Oooomg! I would have fucking FLIPPED!!! "CANCEL MY FUCKING ACCOUNT. LET ME TALK TO YOUR SUPERVISOR. IM GONNA FUCKING SUE!" Omg! The best part was when he told him that he would understand "some day". OMG and THEN he gave him attitude!

AOL sucks so bad! It's like, the pretend internet that everyone gets before they get fed up with how bad they suck and give them the boot.

agreed. they make it nearly impossible to cancel!

i tried to do it online but after messing up my five "secret questions" or whatever they MAKE you answer in addition to your password and remember six months later they "locked my account for 24 hours" so i had to wait a day to try again.

then, months later when i tried to cancel by phone the robot lady through touch tone found my account easily, but when i got a real person on the line soon after he ''couldn't find it".

i was sucessful by calling my credit card company who was very helpful and practically GLEEFULLY reversed the charges for six months back and told me to call her again if they continued to charge me. they didnt : )

Im glad I got rid of them about 2 years ago. Those bastards outsourced all their jobs. It takes forever to get through and then youre talking to some guy who doesnt give a shit halfway across the world. BOO AOL!!! I already pay to use the internet...we all dont need an inter-internet. They can take all their flashy icons and dohickies and shove it.

I don't know what is worse, the fact that he was clearly baiting the $7 an hour CS rep or the fact that you guys rally behind it as if it were real.

@Mast - I thought the Netflix settlement that the attorneys accepted and the judge had to throw out was more amusing. Gotta love those class action lawyers.

Ah - how was he baiting him? He repeatedly said he wanted to cancel - and the dude wasn't letting him cancel.

Everyone here knows you hate the man, you couldn't drive that point across any further. I've cancelled half a dozen AOL accounts and never had a problem aside from the wait. I also didn't act like an asshole on the phone cal, didn't give false answers to simple questions, and then cuss the guy out when he was trying to give me correct information about my account.

The CS service guy is trying to do his job, it involves reading a script of questions and inputing answers, if you act like a prick repeating the same thing over and over, instead of just letting him do his job, what do you expect 'the dude' only making $7 an hour to do, hug and kiss you?

Well hey, if you are willing to put up with bad customer service where they spend half an hour asking you questions for something that should take five minutes - I am surprised you have such trouble with my posts, Lunchbox.
