    Default Buying A Mattress

Okay... So I'm getting a mattress for my new apartment cuz the twin size at my parents house just ain't gonna cut it. (No laughing at me! ) I contacted a few people on craigslist cuz I'm going to get it a used one (to save money). But, I don't know the first thing about mattresses! I know that I really like the one I have and I hate the one my bf has... I think it's because mine's softer. But, I don't know how soft it really is compared to other mattresses. It's a posturepedic... are those expensive? Do all brands make their mattresses the same? What's a good brand? ANY info would be great because I have NONE. Help!!!

While I'm all for frugality, I don't think I could bring myself to buy a used mattress. It might be a bit expensive but think of the purchase of a new mattress as an investment in yourself.

I honestly wouldn't buy a used one myself. But, I'm freaky like that.

My Husband works in the RTO (Rent To Own) Business.. I just asked him what good ones there are..

Serta (These are what he has in his store. Memory foam is the best)
    Simmons
    Therapeutic

If you have a RTO (Rent-A-Center, RentWay, Aarons, etc..) place around you, I highly recommend that you stop in (or call) and ask them if you have any previously rented mattress for purchase. By law, they have to clean and disinfect mattresses before renting them back out or selling them. So that's probably the best route. You can also get them fairly cheap through them. Don't rent through them (you'll end up paying 4 1/2-5 times more than retail when it's paid off)---Buy it.

That option is better than just buying used from a person. Chances are they won't clean them, disinfect them, any of that good stuff, before selling it to you.

    Good luck!

Are you kidding? People actually rent mattresses and then return them?

Keep the twin until you can afford to buy new! This is a very personal and important purchase. When you have the funds, go to a mattress store and take lots of time lying on the different beds. This is something you will have for years to come, plus with the physical demands of our job, we need the best mattress possible.

^ That's what people have been telling me. I can afford it... I'm just cheap. I figured I could still get a good one.

Novafoam from Costco. It's just like Tempurpedic, and the queen only set me back 600 vs 1200 for the tempurpedic.

Do NOT get a used mattress. Trust me - this is something that is worth buying new. If you absolutely MUST get it used (and don't - but if you must), ensure it is no more than 1 year old. I have this on mine:
    http://www.costco.ca/en-CA/Browse/Pr...rPath=93*4257*
It took me days to get used to it, but now I love it. Crawling onto it after a night at work feels good - seriously. I make special crawling trips just because it feels so nice on my knees.

I would buy a new mattress. I wouldn't want to pay money for something people have spent nights farting into and seeping god knows what through the sheets.

Sometimes you can get away with a cheaper mattress and then buy a foam thingie over the top of it and then put your sheets on it. It is kinda like a comforter but for the mattress - not you.

Maybe you could use you bf matress instead. you should just put a lotta squishy mattress pads on top of it to make it softer. Thats what i do with mine. They are relatively cheap at walmart or target.

dont get a used one!!! you should not sleep in other ppl germs.. blah!

Buying a matress is like buying shoes. You've got to try it on to see if it fits, and there's a lot of options out there. And yes, buy new. Sleeping on a someone else's used mattress is like wearing someone else's used underwear. You can probably get a decent new set for under $500 rail frame included.

My parents (who run a furniture store) buy their matresses wholesale out of a low-profile place in Omaha, Nebraska that specializes in making bedding for luxury hotels like Four Seasons. I'll have to see what the brand name(s) they sell under.

Be aware that doing IT doggie style can ruin some mattresses pretty fast from all that knee compression. LOL
I loved going to strip clubs; I actually made some friends there. Now things are different for the clubs and for me. As a result I am not as happy.

Customers are not entitled to grope, disrespect, or rob strippers. This is their job, not their hobby, and they all need income. Clubs are not just some erotic show for guys to view while drinking.

We have a Simmons Beautyrest Pillowtop with Visco Foam. It cost a lot of money, but we've not slept better in 4 years. It's got the firmness of the visco foam (like tempurpedic) that Joe loves, but the soft pillow top for me. Highly recommended. A lot of places let you finance the mattress, so if you can put a chunk down and finance part of it (most places like Wickes have a no interest/finance charges for 15 month deals) that would help you as well.

I just have to say...never get a used mattress...you don't know what kind of diseases or bodily fluids leaked onto that mattress...ick.

Don't go cheap on a mattress. Get a good one that you really like. It's vital to your sleeping...and spending a few hundred on a sucky mattress to save money will end up costing you more if you have to go buy a newer one fairly soon afterwards.

This is the mattress that I have, along with the topper made by the same company. LOVE IT. Softness of a pillowtop that I love, but with enough firmness and support for my bad back.

^^ My topper and mattress is the same as Jenny's mattress pad that she talks about above. Besides, you cannot beat Costco's return policy (although mattress returns depend on your state so ask your local Costco or call Costco online).

Best thing I ever did for my back.

Hm... My bf got one of those foam toppers at costco a while ago... It got pretty groady after a year or so, though... started turning yellow and kind of started to deteriorate. Okay, I'm so buying a new mattress... I guess you just need to shop around. Think I can get a good full sized one for 300 or less?

Maybe you could buy a floor model?

I know a bed store in my town that always sells matresses cheap when you get a mismatched set (box spring and mattress). I think it's just to get rid of some overstocked items.

The reviews of specific mattresses are locked up for subscribers only, but here's some general advice at Consumer Reports.

It might be worth seeking out the June 2005 issue at the library.

I wouldn't buy a used matteress. To me it's the same as buying used undies.

I went to a small furiture store and looked around for mine. I couldnt afford anything in the place. I blantly told the sales woman my dilema. She told me about what they call remnant matress. Remnants left over fabric that isnt enough to make another mattress. Remnant mattresses are patch worked together. They cost alot less than the orginal.

I paid $200 for a queen size mattress and box springs with a metal frame. I was shocked when they delivered it though. It looked just like a normal mattress to me and it had a pillow top. I got really lucky.
