Default Is 7-8 years the magic number?

The average American moves to a different address every 7-8 years. People talk about the "7 year itch" in long term relationships. And my track record so far is a major career change every 7-8 years (less when I was younger).

I was wondering if that is like a standard attention span for humans, or am I just trying to draw parellels where there are none?

i don't know, I've never been in a relationship for more than 5 years, never lived in a home for more than 2 years, except of course as a child, but for me, I know i will always be a chef and i will probably always live in the small town that i recently moved back to

^^ It is just so hard to consider leaving the Northwest isn't it? When you hear about hurricanes, and floods, and earthquakes and tornados and blizzards and extreme heat, this part of the world seems like paradise with a lot of rain.

I move around a lot, too. I've lived in my current house for over 3 years now and that is probably the longest I've lived in one place since 1985!

It is funny how when I stay in one place for a while how the junk around me starts to accumulate! Maybe time for a garage sale.

I dunno. I've moved 19 times in 28 years.... had 22 jobs in 10 years.... I look at 7-8 years as eons. LOL.

I can't imagine being in a relationship for 7 or 8 years though it would be nice to find someone I'm that compatible with.

I have a three year itch. Every major job I have had for three years. Every major relationship lasts three years. I dont know why that number though.

Where I used to work some people had been there 25 years. I just couldnt imagine working anywhere that long. I would get bored.

Maybe that is it. I only have a three year attention span. lol

For the longest time I would relate to things in four-year cycles (just like high school, college, the Olympics, World Cup, etc). I'd planned on coming back to the States after my current contract period expires next year (I'll have been in England five years, with my company for ten, and I'd be 35 years old), but I recently decided to re-up another two years.

So in the end, this would actually be my longest period in one place with one job in my adult life (seven years).

And there are 7 days in a week!

::thinks about it:: Hm, that doesn' apply to me, though. I've always moved around the 10 year mark... Well, or the 6 month mark Maybe it's just an average?

yeah, definately garage sale time!! i tool all the crap that I accumulated while i was in Portland and plan on having a yard sale as soon as i get my house finished and can move in!

I'll probably stay in the house I'm in for a few years, then move to something bigger, but still in the area.

I may do some traveling, Boston was always a place I'd really like to live, but its so expensive, plus, this is where I grew up, i have a 5 year old boy who will be in kindergarten in the fall and I know that this is a safe place to live, like Paris said with the fact that there's no hurricanes and what not, plus, crime is EXTREMELY low around here.

I was talking with someone a while back about cycles. And we were figuring the length of relationships may be biologically tied to the time it'd take to have a child and rear it and then when it is more dependent - or when the mother is not so dependent on having that mate, the relationship fizzles.

Don't know if that is so true now days. But I have fun thinking about that sort of thing.

I'm hesitant about having children for that very reason. If half the population has a seven year cycle and the other half has a three year cycle then your kid would be left holding the bag without one parent. Plenty of marriages don't make the five year mark. Maybe we're not designed for long term relationships afterall.

The seven year itch is actually 3 years, according to studies.

Edit: BWAHAHA, I posted this before I read others.
