I know some of you own or ride horses. Today I went horseback riding myself on a big, beautiful quarterhouse for a couple of hours. Now the bottom of my boney ass is sore as hell, any suggestions?

LoL nice green!! Your behind will forgive you in a day or so. Take a warm epsom salt bath and sit on cozy soft thingsIm jealous.. its been a year since i've ridden
I hope you had a good time!

awww, I'm jealous! My daughter rides but I can't afford lessons for both of us.![]()
Yeah, it was great and very relaxing. My grandparents have a farm so I use to ride some when I was a kid. First time riding since then, just like hopping on a bike after so many years but very sore. Even though I am sore it was definately worth the experience. They even offered me a job, lol. I wouldn't mind doing it a fews hours a week just for fun.

Sounds like a great job! I'd take it...

Be sure to go to the gym and do some cardio and stretch to get the lactic acid out of your muscles. I ride once a week but it's not enough so that I'm not sore afterwards. Now go put on a pair of seven-inchers and dance!

It'll go away in a few days. If you do it consistently of course you won't get sore anymore. I got on my horse a couple weeks ago (first time in a year), and I literally only rode him around for about 15min b ut I was sore the next day! Good luck and enjoy the horses if you go back. It's an awsome sport.
Just give it few days... if you start riding regualry the pain will go away and your booty will get used to it.

Keep on riding!
I only get on my girl about once a week, but like the others stated, going to the gym and stretchign really helps with the soreness. I never get sore in the butt, it's my inner thighs that bother me.
Also... I'm not sure if you're a new rider, but if you are, you will learn more about what horse people call your 'seat' or learning to 'sit your seat.' Basically we're talking about learning how to ride in a more controlled position without flopping into the saddle seat everytime the horse takes a step. This will only come with time. Also, quarter horses are notorious for being a pretty 'bumpy ride.' Just the nature of the horse.... and not knowing how to sit your seat just compounds that issue. If you have a choice of horses you can always try an Arabian, Tennessee Walker... etc.... just a five gaited horse instead of a three.

^^^but I find Arabs only have smooth canters. They trot like jackhammers. Plus some of them can get a little too hot in that blond Araby way, but we've all got our preferences! I find that draft-crosses make awsome learning horses because they're too big and lazy to be either bouncy or spooky.
We have 11 horses and I rarely have time to ride. My husband has a little more free time than me, but he was just telling me last week that he was sore from riding the day before. Wait it out and keep at it!![]()

I find QH's have the best gaits because they are able to go slower and have more even rythme. I mean I would never want to teach a kid to ride on a Hanovarion.. hell their trot is murder to learn to sit to. Arabs are like jackhammers.. I was training one for a week and my back was dead from that damn trot. QH's IMO are the best horses to learn to ride on, they are smooth and laid back. Thats why my riding school was full of them when I ran it. The only thing you have to watch for is a QH is built downhill... their hind ends are higher then their front end which will make you want to lean forward more.. so sit back untill it feels like your too far back then back a little more and you will be straight in the saddle which will help prevent pain and keep your leg very still just behind the girth(cinch for western) . Once you develope your seat it will become less painful.
Arab pride!
I have 6 Arabs...and maybe I'm just lucky...but they're trots are the easiest things to sit in the world. Two are pretty hot..but the rest are angelic...my stallion actually, is my very best...I've never known a sattlion to be so calm and sweet, but honestly, he is completely trustworthy with children.
I had a Hanovarion stallion like that. I swear he forgot he even had a penis lol. He was the sweetest stallion i've come across. I could stand him next to my mare and he didnt even look at her. The best is he was used for breeding he just knew when he was to do his buisness. I miss that guy.
But yes if you grew up with Arabs you would find them smoother. But when I had a kid whos nervous or even an adult whos been out of the saddle for awhile I would rather have them on my trustworthy QH. I had ONE arab in my riding school and I will never use one again. And he wasnt the only one that soured me away from using them for riding schools. I've come across way too many that are way too flighty and spooky. I swear arabs forget they have brainsDont get me wrong they are wonderful show horses for an experianced rider but I wouldnt want a beginner on one unless it was proven to me it can have a brain.
btw... not ripping apart arabs im just speaking from experiance.
Oh I didnt grow up with them...I grew up with with Appy's and QH's...I still think it depend sont he individual horse..because some Arabs are the most trustworthy and smoothest things...and some GH's can be holy terrors
LMAO my QH was a holy terror and then someShe was the definition of high strung. I also had her super fit for eventing. Like so fit the second you sat on her back she exploded into a hand gallop around the ring and all you could do is go in two point and let her go then bring her back to a trot to warm up. But damn she was a blast to ride
And the best part is... she moved like a warmblood and looked like a TB yet I traced her lines back almost 20 generations and there is nothing but QH there
god I miss that crazy bitch... shes retired and havin lots of sex now.. so I am horseless

Best horse I ever had was an Arabian gelding. That was one loyal, big-hearted little horse. He was gentle with children, spirited with better riders, and well mannered all around. My Arabian filly now is...not so much. I've heard Bey Shah lines are nuts and well, she certainly falls into that category.
Anyway, smoothest trot I ever rode was a Spanish Mustang. He was like glass! Every now and then he got a hankering for the plains though and would bust out of his corral and go wandering. No horse is perfect, I guess.
Happy riding, all!
I ride about 4-5x a week. My TB gelding is very comfy. I alternate between an A/P saddle and my friend's dressage saddle.
I agree with the other poster who said "finding your seat" will help. When I was first learning how to sit the trot, I used to be SOOOO sore I could barely sit! LOL
Western saddles are pretty comfy, although like someone else said, it might be that particular horse's gait. I get on other horses and I feel like they are so uncomfortable! Although I have heard that the better the mover the more uncomfortable the horse - don't know if there is any truth to that but...
I would LOVE to be able to work with horses and get paid for it! If you are really interested in that, I say go for it!!!
