Default Healthy Food that doesn't go bad!

Ok, so for those of you that didn't know, I just moved into my own apartment. Which means, I have absolutely NO food. (except for some protein powder) It also means my bills just went up by 1k a month. So, I need some healthy, cheap, ideas for food to buy that don't go bad super quick (as I'm the only one eating it).

And, since I have no food currently, I can't be tempted by bad stuff in my kitchen!

There's always canned tuna. High in protein, low in fat, cheap, and doesn't go bad. I practically lived on it when I wasn't dancing.

I would also eat canned beans for the same reason. I like jalapeno pinto beans.

My staple has always been pasta. Fry up some garlic and mushrooms and melt some cheese on top of some pasta (alternate whole wheat and white, if you're price-conscious) and it's a decent balanced meal. And cheap. Also you can add whatever vegetables you have on hand, just throw them in the frying pan with the mushrooms. If you want to minimize dishes, you can melt the cheese in the pan over the pasta with the lid closed, after draining. Half pepper jack and half white cheddar is really good.

(Mind you it's somewhat fatty, varying based on how much cheese you throw in, but I actually seem to do well with a certain amount of fatty food. It keeps me from getting snackish all the time!)

More good stuff: Rice cakes with almond butter.

Or, make some brown rice and stir in a bit of miso and a bit of tahini paste, then cook up whatever vegetables you have on hand (I recommend onions) and toss them in. Very simple cheap healthy risotto.

Let's see. I also bake really yummy "pina colada chocolate chip" cookies out of mostly oats and banana. PM me if you want the recipe; these are good enough that I'm hoping to sell or publish the recipe somehow.

    Buy your staples online.

Like say brown rice pasta and almond butter- stuff that costs a mint at health food stores, but is like $1/unit in bulk online.

Veggies. Buy a whole bunch at the beginning of the week, chop them all up and put hem in a big tupperware container. Then add them to everything. Pasta? Fry them up and add them to the sauce. Omelette, stir fry...

Peppers, bean sprouts, carrots, onions, celery, leeks, and cabbage all last at least a week, usually more.

I hard boil all my eggs at once, and keep them in the fridge. They're very filling...a chopped egg on a mixed green salad can fill me for a couple of hours, and I'm a pig.

Oatmeal. Buy bulk quick oats and add your own sugar, raisins, cinnamon, syrup or whatever. WAY cheaper than the single serve packs.

^Awesome advice. I'm totally doing this from now on. It also will save cleanup in the kitchen, which I have absolutely no patience for.

    that's a great idea!

when i was living on my own, i used to go and buy a whole heap of veggies, some hokkien noodles, some pre-cut stir-fry meat (usually either chicken or beef), and a jar of stir-fry sauce. i had a huge wok, so i'd cook up a massive stir-fry then divide it into single serves and put it into tupperwear containers that i could then put in the freezer and reheat when i wanted to eat it! you can do the same thing with curries, rice, etc.

it's good cos that way you always have a nutritous, healthy meal on hand without having to cook every night, and it works out pretty cheap.

Peanut butter, popcorn ( NO BUTTER, but I cheat at times. )

Meat that you have to cut up yourself. Like say whole chickens. Leftover parts can be boiled down into stock, frozen and put away for later use. Like egg drop soup or chicken and dumplings.

Pre-processed stuff is always more expensive.

In the asile that you find canned tuna they have these new packets with tuna or salmon that are so easy to heat up(55 sec) and suprisingly tasty. My favorite is lemon cracked pepper tuna filets by Starkist. It always good to have some frozen veggies around too. Canned soups with a light broth(no creamy ones) are fillling and low fat.

Frozen veggies, definitely. You can add them to everything.

Also, just go to the store more often - twice a week or so - and that way things don't go bad as quickly. Just buy a little at a time of the things that spoil, like milk and fruit. Soy milk doesn't go bad as quickly as regular milk, and the vanilla kind tastes just as good.

well, what do you available? do you have a stove, oven, microwave, fridge, hotplate, or what? and how do you feel about actually cooking?

if you don't mind putting work into your food, and you have an oven, you can eat for obscenely cheap.

I have a microwave, oven, fridge, stove. I hate spending tons of time cooking, but I don't mind cooking once in awhile if I can eat for a few days off of it. Problem is, if I'm starving and stuff takes a long time to make, I won't eat it, I'll go out.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, Scarlett I'm gonna try cutting up the veggies when i buy them like you suggested, maybe that'll help me use them quicker!

Try Almond Butter instead of peanut butter. It's healthier, and still awesome. =)

Buy some shrimp rings if you like seafood and throw them in your freezer. They are 180-220 cals for a whole ring of about 40-55 decent sized shrimp and you can just unthaw them by running hot water over them. Eat them cold with seafood sauce or toss them in some sauce, or add to stir fry. Mmmm here we have them for like $2.50-3.50 a ring.

Diet staples of an amateur body-builder (no steroids for me, thank you):

Egg whites; they come in milk cartons and last for over a month

Various flavors of veggie hamburger; the ground stuff is fairly cheap and doesn't go bad like regular hamburger in the fridge, sprinkle in everything

Parmasean cheese; sprinkle from the can, lasts forever - one of the lowest fat/calorie cheeses

tomatoes and apples; these are very filling and will last for over a month in the fridge, I usually take out a couple apples a day do I don't freeze my teeth

Oatmeal: breakfast of champions - I like it with chocolate or strawberry protein powder

Shreddies: If you are anti-oatmeal, this is the whole-grain cold cereal equivalent, and much better than shredded wheat

Extra-Lean hamburger; when you get it home, wrap up hamburger size portions in saran wrap and freeze, it cooks almost as fast as thawed.

Almonds; only buy a pound at a time to avoid the potato-chip scenario.

Frozen foods: The only frozen foods I indulge in are Michelina's Bowls (less than 400 cal each) and those Bistro Light hotpocket meals.

    That's probably enough...

    Yum.
Trader Joe's house brand of the same kind of thing is about $1.50-$2.00 a box (2 servings).

Potatoes last forever! Buy a couple pounds and leave them in the fridge. I like to microwave mine and split it open, throw on a couple handfuls of spinach and a slice of soy cheese. Microwave it for a few more seconds (to wilt the spinach) and then top with low fat salad dressing. Quick and easy dinner for one!

I think (though not positive) that those are Canadian. They are good, but don't they have sugar in them?

I love the frozen potato shreds. Add in frozen veggies and top with cheese (or vegan shredded equivilent) and salsa. Yummy!

Buy yogurt in the quart size. Add frozen berries and honey for a healthy sweet treat.

Whole wheat pancake mix is also great. I add vanilla protien powder and frozen berries to the mix. Top w/ yogurt treat^^.

Get a pint of fat free sour cream, mix with ranch dressing packet. Use as salad dressing or veggie dip. Much cheaper than the pre-made dips and fat free. Tastes wonderful.

Buy your eggs by the 5 dozen packs. This is about $4 in my area. I hard boil about half of them for "fast food" and use the rest slowly. Eggs last a long time in the fridge.

Low carb tortillas (or whole wheat) freeze nicely as the packages are flat. Just use what you need and return the rest to the freezer. I fill tortillas with just about anything under the sun, from fruit and yogurt, to chicken stir-fry, to PB & J, to eggs or whatever. Great for packing a snack or lunch.

Baby spinach will last longer than other salad greens in the fridge.

I use gardenburgers to replace bread and/or meat products in many recipies (spendy, though).

I love to cook and I get really creative (sometimes my creativity ends up in the disposal ).

Congrats on your new place! I know all about the eating single thing. It is like the store rub your face in the fact that you are cooking for one by packaging everything in mulit serving sizes.

Wheat germ! Add wheat germ to everything, it fills me up a little bit more and adds a bit of protein too.

I second the pancake mix idea. I like the multigrain kind at my store. Make just enough for one or two pancakes and puree canned fruit (no sugar added!!) instead of loading it up with butter and syrup.

Shreddies ARE Canadian I used to bring them back with me when I'd make trips home.

Cottage cheese lasts a long time in the fridge, it tastes GREAT with just a tiny sprinkle of grapefruit flavoured crystal lite in it.

Cooking up batches of chili, stews and soups are not only price conscious but they last a week or two and are very easy to reheat and eat.

Repeating.. eggs! They last quite a while and are so versatile, scrambled, hard boiled, salads, egg fu youngs (add some of that shrimp you have in the freezer to this one), egg drop soup (stir into simmering broth and add a few baby spinach leaves)

Rice is super cheap, I don't eat it because I can't tolerate the high carbs well, but you can add it, or barley to any of your soups, stews etc.
