Default Stripping: the general public's view

Am I right in thinking that when the SC is part of your daily life, it's easy to build a wall to cocoon yourself away from the general public's naive views of your work? I am thinking about getting into stripping, but thought I'd do a little market research into how it would affect the way people see me first (I'm the OP in this thread). The responses were incredibly mixed and there are some utter wankers posting. Thought you guys might find this interesting...

Wow, that actually didn't sound too bad. I mean there have been threads here from askmen.com where the guys are the ones condeming the strippers. There have been other discusions where other forums have been cited with house wives saying horrible things about strippers and not stuff like "those poor stripper women" either. I mean really caustic nasty stuff.

Negative stuff that has happened to me because I am a stripper:
    1. Gynocogist was rude with me and INSISTED I be tested for full round of STDs as well as HIV/AIDS. This was a woman gyno, too! Nasty bitch.
    2. Refused rental on apartments and motel rooms.
    3. Refused service at mall jewelry store.
    4. Refused service at a salon
    5. Refused service by cab company (we won't pick up at that place).
    6. Mortgage lender refused to work with me (too bad for her, as I am working on my next house now, and really getting into real estate investing).
    7. Cursed at by picketers in front of my club
    8. Police rolling their eyeballs at me when I needed help at a bachelor party that turned into a HUGE Brawl. I was in no danger, but I wanted my stereo equipment back, and couldn't get to it until the fight broke up. I think the cops blamed my presence on the fight in the first place.
    9. Bank tellers giving me a hard time about large cash deposits.
    10. If I'm venting about having a bad day, I will frequently get a response of "well that's what you get" from people who don't work in the business, or even from people who do, and still look down on the strippers.
    11. Car salesman who prequalified me as not being credit worthy because of my occupation. Luckily I had cash to buy my brand new car, from another salesman working at the dealership.

I'd say the general public detests strippers about equally with drug dealers and phone solictors.

I loved the quote from Jenna Jameson "I think just about everybody likes adult entertainment" to a news crew. She is living in a dream world.

Promote yourself and earn more money! This is a business that is owned by strippers for strippers. Let's make that money!

I have had a few of the same issues Paris has:

    1. Gynocogist was rude with me and INSISTED I be tested for full round of STDs as well as HIV/AIDS.

    6. Mortgage lender refused to work with me

I also get "You're job not that hard, why are you so tired?" I wanna see other people wear 7 inch heals and work an eight hour shift and dance almost every song of those hours. (I work in a very busy club) I mean its total cardio from the time you step on the floor. If thats not hard work I don't know what is.

I have also been the object of 'profiling' in days past, with my creditworthiness (mortgage lenders, margin brokers) being the primary negative assumption. These financially related problems are indeed 'fixable' with large wads of cash plus a steady string of tax returns and bank account balances. However, the 'social profiling' is nearly impossible to remedy, usually requiring a long-term relationship with doctors, neighbors, organizations to disprove the preconcieved negative notions by contrary example.

The prejudice hasn't fazed me much since I started out so low in life (poor, dark, from wrong side of tracks, bounced out of high school, no money for college, wah wah wah.) People already treated me like a persona non grata, why not revel in being an outsider? + I was born looking like this. HAH!

Don't worry about these idiots. During the periods when I was NOT dancing, I got flack for the jobs I was doing then, too. LIke this:

Sales Manager: Didn't I know salesmen are the scum of the earth? And Radio Shack Salesmen the scum of salesmen? And radio shack managers even worse than that?

Emergency room technician/pre-med student: How awful to make money off other peoples misery. As for the gallows humor that got us through the day--oh, my. How could I? Oh, and docotrs are evil, too, did you know? They don't really want to help people get better, they just want to keep you sick so they can make more money.

Teacher: Teachers never do enough. Apparently, parents are not responsible for thier kids and teenagers are not responsible for thier own behavior. Teachers are responsible for both teaching kids morals, respect, manners, etc--AND making sure they use what they are taught, 24 hours a day. When one of our kids fucks up, it is all our fault.

Soldier: How unamerican of me to want to know how to use a rifle and shoot people. Very un-PC. In fact, I have been out for more than 10 years, and I am still getting shit for it.

My point is, no matter what you choose to do for a living, some knucklehead is going to take exception to it. Follow your bliss and make the best choices for yourself. It will turn out OK.

From the link the OP provided:

"So on one hand, a stripper may be seen as a normal everyday woman who has the same anatomy as everybody else but has slacker morals and less dignity. She doesn't mind dancing naked for strangers because she is paid handsomely for it. She is putting out the message to men everywhere that every woman has a price, and the loosest ones can be bought in your local strip club for a tenner a pop."

On the other hand, a stripper may be seen as a normal everyday woman who has spotted a loophole in society by which she can rake in hundreds of pounds an hour. Men are predators, women are prey. Men chase women, women fend them off. Evolved from this is the fact that it's socially unacceptable for a woman to act as if she likes being sexually attractive and advanced upon. Exploiting this niche in the market has proved profitable beyond belief for many sexy ladies. Men supposedly run the world but if a woman can reduce him to a dribbling puppy simply by shaking what her mama gave her, she DOES have the real power. As someone wise - I think it was Eleanor Roosevelt - once said, "Women control the world because women control men." Whatever morals society wants to impose upon whether or not it's right to flaunt your body, this question of who has the power in the situation cannot possibly be argued."

This is a false dichotomy. The range of possible experiences and influences is much wider than this. It isn't either/or, nor is it stuck on a range between only these two interpretations. She's being a bit fundamentalist.

And it's true that in some ways stripping as work has become somewhat normalized; but there are still more than enough stigmas against it. It's one thing to tell somebody, "I used to to be a used car salesman," and another to say, "I used to be a stripper." The prejudices against your being the kind of person who would ever do such a thing are stronger against former strippers than against former used car salesmen, which should give you some sense of how people PRESENTLY engaged in stripping are often viewed.

I know I try to generally stay away from the negative/narrow views of stripping in my real life. I generally am not that up-front about it with strangers even people in positions of trust like doctors. I generally only go to the doctor when I need my depo shot otherwise I stay the hell out of doctor's office.

All the people I surround myself with are generally open-minded enough to realise I'm a businesswoman first and foremost ... not that I am a stripper. I do enjoy my work yet at the same time I do treat it as a business... forever trying to promote myself therefore increase my business etc.

i remember being about 13 years old when a girl who rode at my barn told me that she was an exotic dancer. i was stunned. she was so sweet. normal. not the least bit trashy.

that was a pivitol moment in my life, though it took time for the full effect to sink in. i am very fortunate to have learned at such a young age and in a such a judgemental society that the things we perceive as true rarely are.

now, 11 years later, i myself am a dancer and i do often forget that people harbor negative stereotypes about us. the girls i work with are, for the most part, sweet and bright young women. they work hard. they lead good lives. it makes it easy to build that cacoon.

the thing is though, i don't think the stigma will ever really change. people enjoying judging others too well and they are too lazy/indifferent to educate themselves about reality.

it's ashame because life is so much better when you appreciate the good in people, rather than painting them with falsified negativity.
