Default Ever been an art class/artist's model?

I did this through college and it was a lot of fun, though obviously doesn't pay as much for adult modeling or stripping. But it tends to pay better by the hours than your average minimum wage job and the class is generall very respectful and fun.
Plus you get to be some painter's muse...:-) And $10.00 an hours is not bad for just standing still...or falling asleep in a reclining pose.
I'm getting a job doing this again this summer, looking forward to doing it again.
If you are a college student or live near a college, I definitely reccomend it as a way to earn extra cash.
Anyone else done this? want to share info?

I've been an artists' model for eight years now. It does pay pretty well (around 15 to 20 an hour here). The one thing i have some trouble with is keeping it consistant, unless you live near a city with lots of colleges. Sometimes it sucks (holding long, painful poses; bossy instructors) but it can also be really cool. I really like seeing the finished product when a really good painter uses me as a model (http://static.flickr.com/40/82654576_5a956d394e.jpg)

I have a bit, but more for being a part of art as compared to doing it for the money. Depends on the school, really. Some have more money to spend on hiring models... some are damn broke. It can be QUITE fun and really rewarding to be a) art and b) helping the teaching process.

i did it a few years ago in college during winter breaks.. Yes, i got paid $10 an hour... its actually more difficult than i imagined.... you really can't move and you just sit in one position for a significant ammount of time.... The good news is, a woman in the class painted a pic of me and its hanging in a gallery in my hometown.. The asking price for a painting of me is $1,000... i'm suprised my parents never bought it yet.. hopefully they will.

i did this all last year while i was 17. my figure has always been very slim with curves in all the right places- dubbed as either "very 50s" or "very pre-raphaelite" so i went down a treat. the students- who ranged from people my age and younger to OAPs on daytime courses, always told me i was a refreshing change as they didnt get to paint many people my age. it was so much fun. the pay was £10per hour and i got a lot of breaks. i once got to dress as a butterfly, well when i say dress i mean put on wings and i insisted that for 1.5 hours i could stand with my arms up in the air spread out. i ended up fainting, which was so embarrasing. a few months later i was walking past a local art gallery though and saw a portrait from that particular class, and i bought it as a reminder. i would say do it, its easy money.

I adored figure modeling. I'm exceedingly vain and the pretty-much-greatest thing ever was walking around a room and seeing 20 or 30 creative and varied pictures of ME. It helped that I worked at a fairly prestigious art school-- I wouldn't have been so pleased if the students had been less talented because the portraits wouldn't have been as flattering. I was sad to leave that job, but I moved 50 miles away and the commute wouldn't really have been sensible-- the job didn't pay THAT well. Still, I'd do it again in a heartbeat. If you don't mind holding still and can think of unusual (but comfortable) things to do with your body on short notice it is a very cool job (especially for narcissists like me).

damn. all the models i wind up having to paint or draw in my classes are always old fat men. some of you girls need to model here, lol. of course, i can't do it myself since that would be rather akward.

    *bump*

^ i'm wondering how to get started too.

that seems like the hardest part. does it work to just call up art schools and colleges with art programs and ask them if they are hiring models?

A model whom I know did just that - went to a local art school, just a small one, and kept busy, I think, three days of the week.

I've heard suggestions of photographers/artists who are looking for models to go to an art school or department and post a "model wanted" note, but I've never done it. But I'm wondering if you'd get more referrals for modeling work outside of the school.
