Relax--don't try so hard. Give yourself a break, especially if the bruises are bothering you. It's a bigger obstacle in your mind, I can tell, than it really needs to be. You don't want to struggle, you want to relax as much as possible.

I have seen the occasional dancer who can start doing tricks very quickly, but for most there is an awkward period. But the more you relax and think of your movements as being smooth and flowing, rather than trying to hoist yourself, etc., the quicker it will be.

It's also better to get a feel for it by doing simple tricks first.

Get the S-Factor book. Otherwise see if there are some good pole dancers in your club who would be willing to help you with your pole moves.

It's NOT easy. But, with practice you'll be fine.

And, yes...when you learn the pole you'll have more bruises than you can count...get some Arnica. As you do the pole more and more, you won't bruise as easily, so don't worry about that.

definately try to get someone to help you if you can. Also...get a set of 5-10 pound weights and do bicep and tricep excersizes at home. Pole work requires quite a bit of upper body strength.

The pain is part of the process, don't give up. Just push through. Otherwise if you take a break and try it again later, you'll have to go through the entire pain again.

Maybe you can set up a pole at your house to practice? Also, do push-ups, tricep dips and pull-ups. They will help you immensely with building upper body strength, which you will need to do pole work safely.

I'm no expert on the pole..but just taking the time and reading the S-Factor book by Sheila Kelley..It's great book that shows you how to do a lot of things such as floor work, warm ups, and even POLE work! I think you should stop by your local book store (Borders or Barnes & Nobles) and just read the book, maybe try to remember the pictures and just write down the tips.. the book was no more than $15 for me.. it has pretty good pointers.

I'm actually taking classes for $15 on pole dancing every week taught by professionals at this studio near my house.. Definitely look into some studios who could teach you as well as they could be someone to spot you so you won't hurt urself.

I love doing pole tricks, but I can relate, I remember how brused up my legs would get when I first started. That goes away after some time. I have one pole trick where I climb to the top of the pole and flip upside down and make the pole spin real fast, when I first started doing it I would get dizzy, but now I don't I just make people dizzy watching me.

you -need- muscle strength first. i tried so hard to do tricks and failed at first because i lacked the upper arm strength. learn a few simple twirls and build up your arms and legs, gradually add a new trick every couple weeks while your muscles improve

the most important thing i have found to successful pole tricks is to have fun! pick a peice of music that is high energy and that you love and just jump into it. you'll pick the tricks up twice as fast this way!
