Default Anyone know anything about dairy intolerence?

I was recently advised to cut out dairy as my mums lactose intolerent and seemimgly food intolerence is very commonly hereditory and it was suggested that cutting out dairy might help me with some other alergys I suffer with. Ive switched to soya milk and yogurt and Ive cut out cheese, chocolate and butter but Im not sure if i need to cut out things like biscuits which have been baked using butter. Does anyone know if I need to cut out biscuits and cakes as well? Also, Ive not cut out eggs as my mum has no alergy to these but are eggs classed as dairy or is it just things that are made from milk?

My husband has a dairy intolerance. He can only have enough milk to have a bowl of cereal once a day, can't have ice cream or very many other dairy products. He can have butter, his intolerance is all over the place. You might want to do some research. All intolerances are different

I have an intolerance too but like CorsicaFire said, mine too is all over the place. Sometimes cheese doesn't bother me, sometimes I'm ill for two days after I eat it. Ice cream is a HUGE no-no for me unless I'm eager for some punishment. The best way for you to figure out your tolerance is to sample different dairy products and amounts. You may find you're able to tolerate some products better then others, or certain amounts per day.

I became lactose intolerant for 6 months after food poisoning killed the "good" bacteria in my GI tract that break down lactose.....I was raised on dairy products (dad's in the dairy biz) so it took a while to figure out what happened. I had to eat Lactaid tablets to tolerate milk products. Bear in mind lactose-digestion supplements vary in quality.
Non-soy "milk" options are almond & rice milk.

literally, about 80% of the population is lactose intolerant and doesnt know it. It depends on sooooo many things... i can eat cheese, ice cream, whatever, but i have a drop of milk to take a pill with and im throwing up the rest of the night...

also, theres a diff between a milk ALLERGY and lactose intolerance-- so i'd find out exactly what it is, because lactose intolerance is treatable with lactase enzymes.

Eggs have no lactose, so you shouldn't have to worry about them. As for how much incidental dairy you can handle, that's something you just have to figure out by trying it and seeing if it makes you feel bad. And yes, it's all over the place. My boyfriend can't have milk, but he can have ice cream. My cousin can't have any lactose whatsoever, not even chocolate!

I have to disagree with this. Some lactose intolerance can be treated with enzymes...some cannot. It all depends on the individual. I'm totally lactose intolerant and the enzymes do not help me.

As for the original question, I would say that you could have "some" butter and stuff. But it really depends upon your own body type. I really suggest that you cut out ALL dairy for at least 30 days. No dairy what-so-ever. Then, after 30 days, start slowing incorporating single items, like butter. See how your body reacts (keep a journal). That way you know what you can or cannot have.

Also, eggs are usually not a source of much allergy. However, depending on the allergy you do have, you may want to use egg substitute for a while and then work on reincorporating eggs to see how you feel.
