    Getting a Lawyer

Maybe I'm paranoid. I don't know. But I think I would sleep better at night knowing that I have a lawyer ready to jump to my rescue in case of a raid or any sort of stripping-related unpleasantness. Is there a list of lawyers who specialize in this field? Should I get two (one for NY and one for NJ)? How much does it cost? Is it a yearly fee?

    Thanks!

I agree. I think it's a great idea especially if there's political 'unrest' in your town, county or state. You don't want to wait until you're in handcuffs because it is a process to find an affordable yet competent attorney.

Call some criminal defense attorneys in your area. Look for length of time practicing in your area. Retain the head of the firm if possible. Ask if they're part of any civic organizations--the more connections, the better. Ask how they would handle a prostitution charge or any other charge. You're looking for an attorney who will patiently, fully explain the charges and their advice to address them. You don't want someone impatient or condescending. You don't want someone who's laissez faire because you'll probably need someone who can get indignant and fight vocally for you--think Bobby on The Practice. No cool or jaded lawyers. You want to ask them what their hours usually are. Look for someone who has later hours like 8-7. My boyfriend got stuck with an attorney who was halfway to retirement and worked 9-2 STRICTLY! He could never get the man on the phone!

You could always find one who is licensed in both states. These days, most lawyers sit for the Multi-State Bar so they can get licensed in one shot in several states. One lawyer, one bill.

I would think they'd just charge you a fee for a consult like maybe $250 for the hour or whatever their hourly rate may be. Then a lot of lawyers have an answering service where they can be reached 24/7 if they do criminal defense. Make sure they have that. Then save some money to give them a retainer should you get arrested.

If you're worried enough to be looking around for a criminal defense attorney to keep on retainer, consider this: unless you (or someone you'll be able to get in touch with 24/7) are capable of posting bond in the full amount, you're probably going to need a bail bond. And, if can't post immediately after being arraigned will be taken back to jail until it's posted and you've been "processed" out, which can take man inordinant amount of time. So, might want to look into making arrangements for that first.

Insofar as lawyers go, very much agree with your inclination to 'do the research' now, whether or not you wind up putting one on retainer - and, at a minimum, at least ID a couple that fit basic 'profile' you're looking for and put their names, numbers, etc. in your purse. Re: basic 'profile' - though you should not take literally, as pretty much all of them do both to varying degrees, criminal defense attorneys are often viewed as either being a 'fixer' or a 'litigator,' and what type of charges you're facing largely determines which type you'll need (and NO, term 'fixer' does NOT derive from use of illegal means, such as paypoffs, etc., to dispose of cases - refers to use of "schmoozing" and connections to either get charges dismissed or, more commonly, reduced to something 'acceptable' insofar as both pleading and sentencing are concerned). And, given the crime(s) you're most likely to be charged with committing, IMHO your best bet is to find an ex-A.D.A. no more than 5 years removed from the office with at least somewhat of a reputation for being a 'fixer,' and let him/her see what he/she can do. Just my $.02, though.

Finally, for what it's worth you pretty much get what you can pay for with attorneys - IOW, there's a very close correlation between skill/ability and price for services. So, if at all possible, don't go cheap! Think of it this way: if you're going to entrust someone with your life (surgeon), your liberty (criminal defense attorney), or your fortune (civil attorney), no matter how much you might have saved on the front end - if he/she f**** up, it'll look like peanuts on the back end.
