    Default Busted Zipper

You would think I would know this after living 36 years on this here earth, but when one busts a zipper in a pair of shorts, is it easily fixable, or should I just chuck the pants?

I know. Im dumb. I readily admit this. LOL One of the travails of being a single guy living alone.

My wife could whip a new one in for ya in a couple of minutes. It is a little bit of a pain though. Most dry cleaners that have tailoring will do it, it's generally under 10 bucks. All depends on how much you like the shorts, I guess.

Ya, what MrChristopher says! Have your tailor throw a new zipper in. You could try to do it yourself, but I'm not sure it's a good starting project.

Yea, most dry cleaners can handle this simple tailoring for under $10.

But, more importantly, share the story on how it broke!

Even if it didn't happen in a club, make up a good story.

Does it entale replacing the zipper entirely?

Its a fairly new pair of shorts. I dig em, so I dont want to chuck em.

Basically yes. Zippers come mounted onto a cloth strip. The strip is stiched to the pants.

So you remove the existing cloth strip and zipper, and stitch in a new one.

Ah. I see. You are wise in the ways of the zipper, says I.

have you ever sewn before? are the pants an unusual color?

what you would need to do is measure the length of the zipper and buy one (preferrably of the same color, so you don't look like a jackass) of the same length at a fabric/sewing/craft store. a zipper cannot be cut to fit, unless you have the tools and knowledge to construct a zipper in the first place- which i'm assuming you don't, since you're asking this question. you then need to remove the original zipper, which will be attached to two fabric strips (remove these as well) and sew the new zipper in place. when you remove the original zipper, be careful to cut only the stitches binding the zipper to the pants, and not the fabric of the pants itself. unless you are very skilled with a sewing machine, it will be much easier to sew it by hand. this translates into a lot of hastle, and you still have to pay a few dollars for the new zipper. so you might as well take it to your tailor. unless, of course, you find this sort of thing fun.

The only result of me using thread and a needle would be much blood and the removal of my fingerprints.

Well, not to confuse the issue, but sure they can! You just cut them off at the top.

Also, don't do it by hand! Hand stitching (unless it's ridiculously fine) isn't strong enough for zippers.

Bring them to a tailor. $10 and you're done.

Looks like spending the dough on a tailor is the way to go. Thanks folks.

Now, finding one 'round here is a different story...

Some "tips" for you: Always wash pants inside out, w/zipper zipped. My way of dealing w/the busted zip. is to wear a shirt that covers the fly, or safety pin it, (on the inside so it's not noticeable, but that's a pain when you hafta pee). I can fix 'em too, but sewng is usually last on my list. Good luck.

whether or not you can cut it at the top depends upon the type of zipper- many have catches at the top to prevent the slide from being pulled completely off. if you cut it at the top, you cut off the catch, and ruin the zipper. also, the teeth alternate, so if you start cutting, you'll end up with an uneven zipper.

and my hand sewing is always ridiculously strong. what do you think i did before i could afford a sewing machine?
