Default And if you think World Cup Soccer is boring...

Have you seen some of the other fare on ESPN & ESPN2 lately?

Billiards, poker, and obstacle courses for dogs were bad enough, but c'mon, dominoes? Can competitive Scrabble and Monopoly broadcasts be that far off?

Actually, if anything, ESPN is going back to its roots. After all, the initals "ESPN" used to stand for "Entertainment and Sports Network", which by that description would mean it's more than just sporting events. Before their current focus on MLB, NFL, and the NBA, ESPN used to show things like Formula One racing, World's Strongest Man, and my favorite, Australian Rules Football.

^^^Entertainment and Sports Programming Network. You left out a word, but you're right. ESPN's original "charter" was not limited to sports. Nevertheless, the pendulum swing is rather ironic. Back when they started, they were forced to carry lesser sports and non-sporting events because they had no budget and no clout. These days, they're obviously carrying lesser sports and non-sporting events because it's a profitable way to increase their audience base, bring in new advertisers and possibly hit on "the next big thing."

Shoot, if this trend continues, the next thing you know, Sports Illustrated will feature something terribly unsportsworthy, like girls in swimsuits. Speaking of which, how about creating an event called the Stripper Games for ESPN? Would anyone object if the tie to actual sport were rather tenuous?

Thanks for the correction, I used to think the "SP" stood for Sports, not Sports Programming. For a long time ESPN also used to have things like "Bodies In Motion" and "Bodyshaping" (fitness shows), college cheerleading & dance team competitions (the inspiration for the movie Bring It On), and for a couple of years they also broadcast "The Making of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders calendar".
