    Default Computer help...

I need to install a wireless modem on a new computer. It installs fine, but when I go to do the final reboot, the computer freezes up. Would this be a problem with the MHz??

I'm getting aggravated!! ARRRRGH...oh, and how would I find out how many MHz a computer has??

I don't think the speed(MHz) of the modem or computer is important. Probably messed up the installing or if really old modem or operating system incompatible.

what type or model of modem? what type of computer (laptop or desktop, windows xp??)?
there are plenty of hardware forums if you're really interested.

    VenusGoddess,

Drop us some details along the lines of

    Operating System
    Computer Brand (if any)
    Model Number (if any)
    CPU Speed
    How much RAM

What type of ADSL Modem/Router are you using?

    Is it internal or External?

If it is external and USB try unpluging it until the system starts up, then once everything is fine plug it back in.

I have an extra USB card in one of my systems and if anything is plugged into it Windows 2k will not startup. I unplug it before starting and all is well.

-There are a few good tech support forums out there, and they will ask you just about the same as I have.

You could also put this to a google search using a string similar to:

adsl modem model232323 stalls windows xp startup.

I'll be back very late Melbourne time.

Let us know how you go.

Also, is it freezing on the reboot, or before the reboot. Ie when windows goes to shut down, or after shutdown and restart occurs? There are be a few different soultions depending on that factor. I know if it is during shutdown, something did not get completly installed or quite properly.

    Operating System - Windows XP
Computer Brand (if any) - A friend made the computer
Model Number (if any) - Unknown
CPU Speed - 751 Mhz (is this what CPU speed means?)
How much RAM - 256 MB

What type of ADSL Modem/Router are you using? My main Router is a NetGear...the modem that I was "assured" to install is a Linksys Wireless - G PCI Adapter modem (wireless)

Is it internal or External? Well, internal in the sense that I need to hook it up into an internal computer slot.

adsl modem model232323 stalls windows xp startup. - I'll try this, thanks!

Everything from the disk installs and then it says to shut down the computer and insert the PCI card into the proper slot (there's only one slot in this computer where it will fit). I put it in and restarted the computer...it gets to the window start up screen and then freezes (You know, the black screen that says "windows xp" and then has that bar that has a moving line through it.

I had to turn it off by unplugging it (couldn't do it any other way) and then restart it, it did the same thing. I finally went and pulled the actual modem card out and restarted it and it started fine...so it's got something to do with the card, I think.

If it's a pci card, I assume you had to open your computer's case and install it. If that's the case you have to make sure that the card is seated all the way into the slot. You may have to press down firmly on it until you hear it snap into place. If it's not all the way in, it may cause the lockups.

Yes, an unseated card will make the computer freeze during boot.

Yes, you'll need to replace the MHz with a new one.

Thanks for the added info. Just a quickie here. I'm at a friends place and bored.

I'd check the card is seated ok, but I doubt it. I've seen a lot of stalls at this point in the boot up, caused by hardware conflicts. Sometimes a PCI slot uses a particular IRQ, and the card wants a different one.

Plug and play is not for real.... plug and pray is.

When I have a momment's peace tonight I'll do some harder looking for you and explain the PCE swap-er-roo.

PC specs should be more than sufficient for this operation. I really think it is hardware confilict

If you are familar with event viewer, you can have a look there. I'd take you through it now, but I'm on a korean computer and it is a pain in the a** to translate it back into english witout help. Especially when my Korean is limited.

    VG

What I have often found when installing some new hardware into a computer that has very few slots left, is that the resources are not shared as well.

From what you’ve told me you only have 1 slot left. So either you’re using a small form factor (shoebox) computer or like me you have lots of stuff. As a friend built your computer I would not doubt that there is lots of stuff in there.

Anyway, given the speed and thereby relative age of the system, I’m fairly certain that I’m on the right track. I know this has happened to me before.

Often the slot on your computer is keyed to a particular set of resources. This can stuff you up if the card does not support the resources available to it.

At this point if you want to get someone hands on I can understand. Let me know if you need any details.

What I would do on my computer is the following:

Get it back to normal (I’m sure you’ve done this)

Turn it off. Take out any other pci card and put it in the slot you wanted to use for the new card. I usually just take the one directly above it and put it down one slot. Once you have that done, reboot the PC and make sure everything is fine. If all is well you know the slot is ok, and that you can go to the next step.

If all is not well you make sure the card is in right. If the card is seated properly, then you have a bad slot. This happens sometimes and there is little you can do about it. Could also be a bad card.

Assuming the computer went well, shut it down, and put the new card into the slot that is now free.

Fire up your system, cross your fingers, and all should be well.

I’ve looked on google a little, but most of the issues I encountered were with firmware or when the system was operational but not responding. Hopefully you’ve found better.

At this point I don’t think event viewer will do much good for you, so update and we can go from there.

    Good Luck!

Ok...I've done everything but put a meat cleaver into the PCI card.

Now, it's my mom's computer, and I had installed a DSL modem into her computer before. She's now switching to a wireless router (to run through our wireless system) so I took out the DSL modem card and replaced it with the wireless modem card.

Works fine, so far. I haven't finished putting it all together, so I'll update when I have more. Thanks for the info...it's greatly appreciated.

Sounds good, if you need a meat cleaver +10, or a shotgun, let me know. I might fix these Bas***** but that does not mean I havent threttened to throw them into the nearest body for water.

If both cards work, but only one at a time = card conflict. Usually you can get cards work together, but I have heard where they will not. There is no rhyme or reson I have ever seen, other than resouce grabbing.

I'll dig up my computers getting blown up video if you want.

Hoping I helped a bit. I needed something to thing about the other day... 7 non english speakers going on in their language and me being a tree for three little kids requires a bit of distraction when you've been up 19+ hours.

    Oh well more sleep.
