Default Help! my dog's shaking uncontrollably

So i searched found nothing about this, and im googling but cant find much...

i have a 3 and a half year old shih tzu (avatar) jesse the ewok. he is normally very fiesty and alive, but yesterday i noticed he was shaking pretty badly in his hind legs and stomach area, almost like convulsions. he is having some problems walking and peeing (lifting leg seems difficult). any ideas folks?

the vet emergency room is $100 for just the visit plus whatever they have to do and im trying not to spend a lot since every penny i have is going toward the settlement of my new house... so worried about my baby!

    Love it!

Why don't you have pet insurance? I'm sorry, but a life is more important than a house. Your dog could be having seizures or have a brain tumor. Do you want him to die or are you expecting people on Stripperweb to tell you NOT to take him to the vet and instead hit him over the head with a five-iron?

Sorry, I'm not giving you any slack. Take your animal to the vet. He's in pain, he's in your care and, in owning him, you have assumed all responsibility of his financial needs.

Take him to the vet. Now.

Would you want to be in seizures and nobody to take you to the ER?

Have a pet, accept the responsibility. DON'T POST ON A FORUM FOR ADVICE ONLY A VET IN PERSON CAN GIVE

Yes, I would take him to the vet immediately. Sounds like seizures to me. We can't do anything here about it. The faster you get him to the vet the quicker he can get better.

Or, you know, to have a flesh-eating disease and post about it here rather than going to the hospital?

    I hope Jessie is OK!

please take your pet to the vet as soon as possible. are the convulsions uncontrollable, involuntary wet dog shakes?

Honey, it's a couple hundred bucks. That is not going to make or break your house buying. You can see if there is a non-emergency vet open, but failing that you obviously know that if your dog is in convulsions it needs veterinary attention.

I'm just going to echo everyone else here, and say that you need to get Jesse to a vet. I know you have to settle your house and all, but, seizures are very serious.

I had a 3-year-old Chihuahua some time ago. He was a shelter adoption who had come from an abusive home. About 2 days after we brought him home, he started having MAJOR seizures. Turns out, the damage to his throat was too extensive, and his throat was collapsing. It couldn't be repaired, sadly. But, I honestly cannot tell you how much we spent trying to make him better, because it was THAT much. We had him for about 6 months, with his seizures happening about every 2 days, each one worse than the last. And these seizures were scary to watch: he'd drop to the floor, convulse, pee, foam at the mouth, etc. The Chihuahua rescue was kind enough to take him, and humanely put him down, because we just couldn't do it. I couldn't take him to our vet myself and put him down at only 3 1/2 years old. His life was far too short.

Pet Insurance is something you can look into for the future. But, like health Insurance for people, you'll have a hard time getting him covered with a pre-existing condition. It sucks, but we tried that with Toby, and that's just how it is.

As for the rest of you (except Susan and GIL, Jenny, and even Kikin whose responses were kind)---cut the girl a break. She's obviously got a lot on her plate right now.

Good luck, Chrissy. Give him a big hug for me.

I'm always curious about posts like these. What do you want from us? To say, "oh, dont worry if he's shaking, cant pee and his leg is apparantly paralyzed...I;m sure he'll be fine"?

Of course, if somrthing happened and he died tomorrow...we'd get yelled at for giving bad advice.

You call him your baby, but are delaying taking him to the vet because you dont want to spend $100. That doesn't work for me. if he's your baby, take proper care of him and get him some real medical help.

If your priority is saving money, then you shouldn't own a pet, period. When a creature is your responsibility, you are morally binded to take care of the thing's LIFE before your own material wants. Thats the deal.

Okay we all do silly things sometimes when we are paniced, maybe you posted this thread in panic ?
People here are obviously not going to sugar coat the way they feel and you shouldn't expect them to.

But no matter what you need to get your dog to a vets.

I don't know where you are but in the UK we have an organistaion called the PDSA which is an organistaion that helps pets even if their owners are in financial trouble. http://khttp://www.pdsa.com/
If you are that broke then you should search and see if they have anything similar in the state that you live or whether your vet offers payment plan.

If your dog is okay and I hope he/she is, please be responsible and make a descison -either find a home where they can care for your pet properly or get pet insurance.

shaking can be from anything ranging to anxiety to stroke. we arent vets.

however if you really love him i dont think you would hesitate to take him to the vet.

my dog is my child for a lack of a better word. she gets so much as a cut on her paw and i take her to the vet lol.

Is the house really going to be worth it when you have to sacrifice your dog to get it?

yikes! I just took my kids to the vet yesterday and had their shots and tests and that was three hundred, big deal, you can always make money..
I too am going to echo everyone on here, take the poor kid to the vet.. Obviously you can't find any answers online, all the reasons more not to hesitate.. It could be something serious that will get worse if you delay..
Think how scared the dog must be right now, I'm sure he doesn't understand what is happening to him any more than you do. At least YOU can get some answers and try to fix the problem.

I couldn't go to the hospitals at first. I tried. I called. They wouldn't take me without Australian insurance UNTIL they realized it was a REAL big emergency.

Jesus, people, apparently no one here has ever been insanely ripped off by an emergency vet before. Have you never walked in there and been told you'd instantly be in the hole for $800? Hmph. Ease up, it's not like she's talking about a child. And yes, human children are different from pets, morally and legally. She was concerned and asked a question and all everyone can do is yell at her. Nice.

She did not come on here asking for help, she came on here asking for an excuse not to have to pay for a vet. What would you want us to say? Don't worry, everything is okay? To even have to post about uncontrollable shaking means something is NOT okay. And honestly it IS the same as a child, to me anyway.. Some children can tell you where it hurts, pets don't have that luxury. If you can't afford to take a dog to the vet, you should not have one, it works the same with children.

She may have come to us looking for help, but she didn't come here to get jumped on. You people need to effin relax. She's also not looking for anyone to tell her it's okay---from what I gather, she's asking if anyone has any ideas of what is going on with her furbaby. There is no harm in asking.

You all need to quit jumping on her shit, though. None of you are perfect.

Vets can be very expensive. Sometimes people have to worry about money. I have personally opted to wait 10 hours until my regular vet opened to get surgery for my ferret, rather than go to the emergency, knowing full well it was a risk. Go ahead. Burn me in effigy. As Susan said - emergency vets charge A LOT. Some people need to concern themselves with this. It is easy to give away someone else's money.

I understand completely, but from what she was writing, she can afford to take the dog to the vet, I think it's her concern more about saving every penny for a house that really pissed me off.. If she couldn't afford it, say that, but don't say you will risk the dog's health for a house. That just doesn't sound right.
I always take my dogs to my own vet, but the are open early and keep long hours, so I have been lucky. As for emergency vets, I don't know their cost. Shouldn't she have her own vet that she can call?
