    caffeine/boobie pain

Ok, so I posted about 6 months ago about having what felt like a swollen gland in my boob. It went away shortly afterwards. Now, it's back, and it hurts (well, it hurt before too...but anyway...) I've read some posts on here about caffeine causing breast pain/lumps? Have any of you experience this? I drink ALOT of caffeine, so this could very well be the culprit.

For any of you that had this problem, did you just stop drinking caffeine cold turkey? Or just cut down? Any suggestions would be helpful. My boob and I thank you in advance

Don't quote me, but I think caffeine causes fibroids, which are lumps in the breast, but not painful ones. I have some caffeine-induced lumpiness, and under normal conditions they don't hurt at all. The problem with them is just that they make cancerous lumps harder to detect.

Fibroids are in the uterus. Perhaps you are thinking of fibrocystic changes? And yes, caffeine can make the lumpiness caused by fibrocystic changes worse. Cut your caffeine back gradually or you will get withdrawal headaches. If you drink coffee, start cutting your regular with decaf. If you drink soda, make every other or every third one caffeine free.

Aww, you have fibrocystic breast tissue! Welcome to the club. I do too. I was badly addicted to caffeine my freshman year of college, and my breasts hurt so badly that I'd wake up screaming if I rolled over in my sleep. So I quit the caffeine cold turkey and suffered withdrawals akin to heroin addiction.

It was a nightmare - I was vomiting for days, shaking, soaking in cold sweats, couldn't sleep, migraines, the works. It lasted a couple of weeks. I don't recommend the cold-turkey method, not at all! Caffeine is one of the few drugs that actually produces a physical dependency (as opposed to a psychological one, where you just think you need it).

You don't have to quit caffeine entirely, but cut back if it's causing breast tenderness. All the little cysts in your breasts are filling up with the caffeine residue - I had to have a very large one drained once, yuck! They stuck a long syringe into my tit where there was a cyst almost the size of a golf ball, and drew out tons of this nasty brown sludge.

The only thing you have to really be concerned about is that fibrocystic breast tissue does increase your risk factor of breast cancer, and it makes it harder to identify a lump. So be diligent about doing your breast exams every month (the best time is right after your period). And if anything feels abnormal, hie thee hence to the doctor!

Actually, proliferative fibrocystic breast disease with atypia increases your risk of breast cancer and is very rare. It is different from the common fibrocystic changes and can be differentiated by needle biopsy. As Yekhefah said, frequent breast exams are a must.

You can try Evening primrose oil (1 tbsp at bedtime). In studies, it has been shown to have a slight benefit. Vitamin E, vitamin A and B6 are frequently suggested, but the doses recommended are so high as to be dangerous and studies have shown no benefit.

Here are a couple of articles for more information.

Hmmm my mom had the same thing. When she drinks coffee BAM breast pains/lumps, so she quit back in university.

She is able to drink of pots of tea a day with no problem however, so if you really love caffeine this may work for you.

Good question with great info. My boobs are always tender. I never even thought it had anything to do with caffine. I'm not a big coffee lover, but I take alot of ephedrine with caffine pills . I know I am dependant on the ephedra. That's my only bad habit...and I am not really ready to kick it. But I am glad to know why my boobs are sore alot!

Yekhefah, so did you go to the doctor when it first happened? I know you said you had the big one you had to have drained, but did the others go away? I just want to avoid a trip to the doctor if I can avoid it, cuz I don't have insurance yet. Also, only one breast is painful, is that normal?

Starting tomorrow I am cutting down on caffeine dramatically *if not cold turkey* Yek I had to quit cold turkey once before and it sucked bad, but it's better than my poor boobie hurting! I have upped my caffeine intake alot over the past few months, so hopefully cutting down will help...or I'll cry

If you cut back on caffeine for a couple of weeks and it still hurts, then go to the doctor. But if it doesn't, then you probably don't need to.

^ I quit coffee for quite awhile at one point, cold turkey, and it was relatively painless...I 'fooled' my body by drinking decaf on the same schedule that I normally drank regular coffee...my body must be dumb, because it totally fell for it. I couldn't wake up until I had a cup of decaf even.

(I know decaf has a bit of caffeine, but it's a comparitively small amount, like 2-3%)

Is your breast hot to the touch or red? Are you having any drainage from the nipple? If not, I would wait until you go through a complete menstrual cycle and monitor any changes in your breast regarding the lumpiness, tenderness, etc. It would give you (and your doctor) a better idea if this is just fibrocystic changes that are reacting to your hormonal cycle.

Well, today was my first day with NO caffeine, and other than wanting to kill someone, it seems to be going ok. The lump feels like it isn't as sore as it was, but I could be wrong. I'm gonna keep checking it and keep away from my beloved caffeine

OMG IT'S GONE! Ok, not completely gone, but it's really tiny and doesn't hurt anymore. I thought it would take alot longer than this, but damn. Thanks for your help all, I'm gonna continue with no caffeine for a couple more days, then just make sure I only drink small amounts, so this doesn't happen again. MWAH!

Good job! There are some other things that can help with energy, eg: tyrosine, ginseng etc. I know you didn't ask, but giving up caffeine is such a bitch.
