Default I got a new computer!

I woke up this morning and my computer, which had been working fine the previous night, was kaput. Wouldn't turn on, though the monitor and speakers were on and functioning. Sigh. Well, this computer was over 4 years old and was more than ready for an upgrade, just waiting for the right time or a good deal. So I went online, found a decent package with a 17" LCD monitor and a printer, and picked it up at Best Buy today. I came home and set it up, and here I am, half an hour later, surfing to my heart's content. I love technology!

Things I don't have to deal with anymore:

    1. Not having a legal copy of XP
    2. Having USB 1.1 ports instead of 2.0 (and only having two, in the back, so I had to have a hub)
    3. Not having any Firewire ports
    4. My increasingly flaky and bulky CRT monitor (which was only $15 and lasted 3 years, so I can't complain)
    5. Not having a DVD burner
    6. My aged keyboard and mouse

Now I have all the ports I need, PLUS the OS is Windows Media Center, so I can eventually burn TV shows to my hard drive (like Tivo) and organize all my pictures and MP3s to be much more accessible. And I have a printer again, which is great. I'm totally diggin' it. I did strip out the RAM (which was relatively new) and the hard drives so I could pull the information off them eventually, so in the end I won't lose any information.

I actually already have a laptop. It's currently broken, though. And yes, it would have cost less to fix the laptop than to buy a desktop, but then I wouldn't have had the capability to transfer the information from my old hard drives onto the new hard drive. This way, I can install the large of the old HDs as a slave drive on the new machine and voila--more space and all my info intact. I like to have a laptop and a desktop, and once I have the laptop repaired, I'll have that again.

Depending on what tech you have and the new mobo the ram, may be useful, and you may be able to install all of the HDs if it interest you.

I'd upgrade a computer before buying a new laptop. I just repaired mine and took a crash course in laptop hardware maintaince... phew what a doozy.

Father took it overseas and cracked 2 of the internal support, then my son did the DC adpator in and the DC power jack as well.

    All dollars are Australian.

I just didn't see paying $175 for a diagnosis, and then abou $150/hour for reapirs.

I think it would have ran up to about $600 (maybe more)dollars to repair the notebook. A decent new one was $1200. I spent $160 on parts, 40 of which was spent on 2 basic soidering jobs. Still not 100% (it overheats, and does not boot off of battery) but I'm not going to pay that much for a service I don't value when I can DIY. Being a computer tech I really hate going to another for some work to get done, and they always try to rip you off.

Compared to what I charge for freelance onsite work I am in the wrong end of the busienss. I'm going to have to get a laptop course or two under the belt add some selling techniques, keep my ethics and get that cash.

The RAM is a different speed in the new computer than the existing RAM. No biggie--I actually have a friend who could use the old RAM as an upgrade to his computer, so share and share alike. I can't install all the HDs (I only have two available bays, one external and one internal) but what I'll do is install the one as a slave, move the information I want to the new C drive, then uninstall it and install the other as a slave and keep it there. (One is a 40GB, the other is a 120GB--I'll keep the 120.) Eventually I'll buy an external HD and use it to store my media. That seems to make the most sense in the long run.
