    Tanning Bed Virgin

I am well aware of the risks involved with tanning; I've worn suncreen daily since I was around 14 (I'm 27 now).

I use sunless tanners, but I have problems with them wearing off unevenly when I'm working a lot. Since I'm planning to travel again and work, I want to get a real tan so that I won't be fooling with a million creams in a hotel room.

I have no idea what to bring with me, how long to stay in, anything. I have fair olive skin that tans relatively easily.

Any advice? Besides that tanning isn't good for me... If there has been a thread here about this, please point me in that direction, because I couldn't find it in my searching.

    Thanks!

Don't use tingle factor lotion the first time, or the second, unless you want to be Kentucky Fried Sienna. They sell tanning lotions in the salon and they'll be able to reccomend one for you if you tell them pretty much what you wrote about your skin. I tend to like the ones that have bronzers in them. They'll also be able to guide you in terms of time when they see your skin tone in person. If you have fake bottle tan on when you go in, just make sure to tell them that.

Go in for a only a little while. Slowly build up. Don't worry about seeing a tan early on. Once you get a base tan then you can get to the darkness that you want.

Bring (or buy) the little goggles because you should NEVER tan without eye wear.
My place provides towels, I don't know about anywhere else. But I don't even use it much.
I always have something to tie my hair up to keep my color from fading and so my neck doesn't get a line.
Use moisturizing lotion in plenty, because tanning will dry you out more than usual.

If your tanning lotion has a bronzer, use the little towel or some baby wipes to get the excess tanner off from between your fingers. Also, you can ask for more time before they start the bed; this is really useful if you're wearing more clothing or can never find your lotion bottle from the bottom of your bag... Use tanning booth lotions only. Many of the outdoor tanners have ingredients that can leave a film on the beds and mess them up. Lastly, don't over do it. Everyone knows the girl who looks like a baked potato yet insists her tan is fading if she goes a day without tanning.

I have to second the whole "starting slow and building" advice. No matter how well or fast you tan, if you've never been in a bed before, you need to start slow. Different people react differently to the beds and those UV lights can be really intense. Go for 5-7 minutes and see how your skin feels. Do that a few times and then start bumping the times up. Also, if you do the beds, you can go for longer (usually) than doing the stand-ups.

Research this stuff...not everyone who works at a taning salon knows what they are talking about.

Never put the tingle stuff on your face...use lots of lotion when you're done...take your own eye goggles (made for tanning) and be sure to ask them when the last time they changed the bed bulbs were. Drink lots of water and I would suggest you do not go more than 1 or 2 times a week.

Also, I've noticed that it DOES make a difference when you use a lotion as opposed to not using one. My tan develops much more quickly and evenly. However, you should buy the lotion online (tanforless.com is a good place, I've had excellent service from them) because it's about 50-70% of what you would pay in the store. And most lotion can be applied sparingly--you don't need to goop it on.

You may also want to consider using a high-pressure bed. These sessions are much more expensive than the 20-minute beds, but it is very difficult to burn and the tan lasts much longer. 3-4 tans every other day for a week will get you significant color that will last a few weeks at least.

The lotion I've been using is Worship Me by Designer Skin. It does not have a tingle, but it does have a bronzer (not a DHA one, though, or at least I've never noticed any staining) and it has a very pleasant spicy smell.

Thanks everyone for your advice. I ended up using a high-pressure bed for 20 mins. If the place had been open today, I would have returned, but I'll go back tomorrow for another 20 mins.

I did end up buying a shot of lotion, because "those people you see walking around looking like jerky, those are people who don't use lotion" was too convincing a selling line.

The Aussie accelerator is a great lotion for first time, I dont recomend tingle lotions untill you have a good base tan. Also use a good moisturiser after tanning(I recomend Kisses, it smells great and is nice). Also only tan every other day untill you get good colour. Every day will end up frying you and drying your skin out.

No pinkness or burning. No noticable tanning, either. The counter girl said that it was impossible to burn with their particular high-pressure bed, even staying in for 20 mins.

Oh yours must be the 'starter beds'. You wont notice a tan though untill about three or four sessions... and it will be about 5 or 6 untill your a nice result.

A high-pressure bed is 99% UVA only. I've tanned in a HP bed with very little base tan (after not tanning for about 6 weeks) and not burned. That's part of why I like them. The tan also lasts longer, too.

Just be aware that you may still be susceptible to burning even with good color from a high-pressure bed. So watch out when spending extended times outdoors or in regular beds.
