    Default photo question..are you serious

Ok...I am new to this site and basically joined to do some research. I am a semi-pro photographer from the Toronto area. I am not a GWC. I have been shooting for a long time. My wife was a model in her teen years and I kind of got hooked on photography after I went with her to some for her shoots. I enjoy what I do and certainly do not shy away from taking images of beautiful women. I have been searching this site for a bit now to try and find what kind of images dancers/models have in their portfolios, what they are after. What I have found are a lot of images that have very bad lighting, are blurry and look to be shot with a cheap digital or even a web camera. Now my question. In the world of dancing, like modelling, isn't a good solid portfolio of images worth it's weight in gold?? I don't think I would get very much work if I showed a potential customer images with bad lighting or not clear and in focus. I admit that I am not the best photographer around but I am also not a perv just trying to photograph naked women. I was just hoping to find some truly classic images that were on this site and have found very few. I would be very interested in hearing comments from dancers, models or other photographers on the importance of your images. A couple of recent shots of mine are below. Thanks.

    Cheers,

    Per

This is a site for strippers, not porn. All of my shots look that they were taken by a cheap digital camera because they were. I see a photo thread and find some goofy shot of myself on my camera, or get my camera, set the timer, and go pose. No lighting, no hair and makeup, just what I look like lounging around at home (maybe minus my shirt). Hehehe My photo shoots are not going on the internet. Besides they were several years and several pounds ago and are not an accurate reflection of what I look like now.
Also, If you are looking for us to volunteer to be photographed, I would like to think most of us here are not dumb enough to go to a photo shoot with someone we don't even know, who is not even a member of this sight.

Most of our pictures on here are for fun-that's it. The ones who have actual portfolios have nice photos, like Darcy, but I believe most of her great portfolio pics dont reside here, maybe Im wrong. Id think the portfolio worthy shots would reside on a modelling site, not a stripper site.

why would a dancer need a portfolio? Stripperweb is a network for dancers to communicate with other dancers. There are some that do modeling too, but that's not dancing.

And I'm not a photography expert, but I'm not especially impressed with your examples either. In the first one, the girl's face is really dark. The second is just not that flattering to the model.

Thanks for the feedback so far...exactly what I am looking for. I stress again taht I am not trying to promote my business (I doubt there are very many here from the Toronto area) or try to get TFP shoots here...just looking for honest feedback. I stated that I am not the best photographer around and am always learning as I go...so no need to get nasty. But if you take your own images, post them here then they are on the internet and if they are not flattering in any way why post them for all to see? As far as porn...I do not nor have I ever shot that kind of stuff. Not really interested. I found this site by accident and find it very interesting. I have read several threads about guys going into strip clubs and they claim they are all "photographers". That would be the last place and thing I would do if I ever went into one. Again...not interested. I just like to photograph things...be it a tree...an old house or people. Just wanting your perspective & views and experiences....thanks again.

    Cheers,

    Have you even LOOKED?

Being a flattering picture is subjective. We are also a very "family" like environment and feel comfortable posting whatever the hell we want I could also ask you why you posted those 2 "unflattering" pictures of that woman. They aren't doing anything for her either.

First and foremost., we aren't here to impress anyone. We all ( including myself. ) postphotos on here to compare..boob jobs... hair extentions.. makeup and our pets for fucks sake.

No one claims to be pro on the photography bit.

No one here goes around with a fucking portfolio at work to customers! have you ever been in a strip club?

I doubt they need a goddamn photo when we are standing there half naked in the flesh.

    Give me a break.

If any of us need pro shots for anything be it websites, ( that we run. ) contests or for work we know to get a pro photographer and not use our 100 dollar camera and webcam.

I know I know... a group of strippers that are women ... we must not have any common sense I mean what are we thinking posting candid photos we took of ourselves .

PS., there are a LOT of dancers from Toronto on this site.

wow..ask a simple question and the claws come out. Some things to clear up. I never said I was a pro photographer....I do make some money at it but not my living. I also stated that I am not the best nor pretend to be. I am still working towards getting better. I never bragged about my work..I posted 2 random images. Cally calls me a creep ...for what? When I do line up shoots I do provide references from recent people that I have worked with and never mislead people as to what the shoot is about or what the images are going to be used for. Chaperones are always welcome....and it is very rare that I shoot nudes. I just dropped a question and everyone is getting nasty and defensive. I don't think I have offended anyone and if I have I am very sorry...not my intention in the least. Oh and Cally..if you are looking for a Toronto based photographer go to and do a search. There are some very talented ones listed.

Well I for one didnt find anything wrong with his post. I dont think he was trying to be mean. Not all of the girls here are into modeling. Thats just how it is. Cut and dry. They arent going to be slapping any Maxim style images on here. The girls who ARE into modeling, or the features that actually hang on this board.... that might be another story. It really depends on the girl. What she's doing in her career, how into modeling she honestly is, if she's even been able to work with really A++ photographers yet, etc.... it doesnt help that a lot of really top photographers charge an arm and a leg for some pictures these days. I mean, if I have a couple hundred just lying around that dont need to go to bills, I'd be down in Miami getting some really righteous images done! But sadly, this is not to be. I'm poor LOL. Dude, I understand your curiosity. Thos eof us who really want to network and find good folks to work with and build a good portfolio would be over on OMP and MM and probably are. I know I am. As for your sample images. I think what was done on your end was fine. I think the girls need to put more focus and energy into their poses.

For me the shots look like an everyday shoot. Nothing special really stands out. I do like the bathroom idea but her pose and her posture is much left to be desired. The 1st one her face is just waaay to dark. Im sure you can PS it and try to give the picture better lighting. Also, if her body was a full length body shot it would make her look better as well. My 2cents.

The pics are rather GWC quality... I'm not a big fan of the lighting either... The photos do nothing good for the model unless she's leading into the pr0n industry. Also by saying how very uninterested you are in seeing nude women or anything pr0n-related while posting pictures that seem to target the male-audiance (it's definitely not fashion or art photography), you are sounding much like a creep. Also, why would strippers need such photos? Especially for club work? I've never seen anyone walk around the club with a "portfolio" and I've never had a potential customer ask to see "professional photos" before getting a private dance. -_-"

yea seriously, why would u think that a portfolio is "worth the weight of gold" in the dancing world, as u say? pretty much everything these ladies have said is true.

i also dont appreciate how you dissed the pictures youve seen on this site. we're definitly not members of this board to show off our "modeling portfolios", because like Paige said, all dancers are not into modeling.

i dont see anything wrong with posting your work here and asking for opinions about it, but when you make assumptions, like all dancers need portfolios, and mock the photos we post here for eachother to see saying what terrible photography it is, its gonna offend us.

Doesn't this belong in "Other Work"?

I'll say this yet again: It's not good form to go to where dancers are (on an Internet site or in a club) and assume, because they look good and take their clothes off, that it's a place to try to harvest models for photography. Go through regular channels, or just leave a card with an online portfolio, and see if they call you. They already get far too many creepy guys who want to take their pictures.

I really have to disagree with the images being only worth getting into porn. They're not all that far off from Maxim style, just with lesser quality lighting and models who cant pose.

The 1st picture isnt much more than this one:

    http://www.jessica-alba.cz/foto/maga...m/maxim_79.jpg

Except for a better bunch of lights, better make up artist, and well, Jessica Alba. The pose is boring, and the girls in each arent doing much to help....

The 2nd one is much like this:

    http://www.rodsterino.pwp.blueyonder...0Brook%203.jpg

Similar in pose and attire, but again.. better lighting, better makeup. Nothing porn-ish about any of it.

FYI both images I linked to were in Maxim.

ok....this is getting away from my original question. Let me phrase it another way. When a dancer is looking for work at a new club (same town, different town) do you just have an interview process with management or do you have a "book" to show you in different outfits and poses. If so where do you go to get them done.

I am only here to do a bit of research. I am not a professional photographer but someone with a love of taking pictures. I do make some $$ with my camera so I guess I am a GWC (guy with a camera) and a GWC (guy with cash). I am interested in doing images of dancers/models if they need them done....I don't go chasing potential customers they contact me. I am working on a website to advertise my services...hence the market research. I resent being called a creep but it's the sticks and stones thing. I am not here to solicit work from any members 'cause I have enough to handle as it is.

As far as my first 2 images posted goes the first was shot at 7am at a location, chosen by the model Christina, in Toronto's east end. The only lighting was the early morning sun.

The second image of Kimberley was shot during a recent 4 day conference that I was attending in Edmonton. I had some down time so I arranged a shoot with this local model. It was shot in a bathroom at the Inn where I was staying. The only light was from a small window with north exposure. I did not travel with my lighting equip.

Below are 2 studio shots that are basic in nature, different from the first 2. So for those that have dissed me (for no real reason) you will enjoy watching as I crawl back under my rock..until next time anyway.

I'm a photographer myself, and I've got over fifteen years of experience with studio and outdoor photography and darkroom processing. You need some equipment, mate. If you're going to shoot outside in sunlight (and that doesn't look like early morning to me, more like high noon) then you need a bounce. Any piece of large white styrofoam or paperboard will do - about four feet by four feet should serve your needs just fine. You rig it up or have someone hold it at an angle so that it bounces the sunlight back to the subject and fills in those shadows. Alternately, you could get a fill flash for your camera, but a bounce would be better.

The chair shot is pretty good. The others look amateurish but you'll get better with practice.

As for the hiring process, no, we don't bring a book. When you're going to be dancing and doing your job live, the managers don't care how well you photograph; they care what you look like in person. And they can see that right there in front of them without photos.

You'd be better off pursuing models and actors than dancers. I imagine you have a sizeable number of actors in Toronto, and actors always need headshots.
