I found it was the same. I filled out an application, met the owner, inspected the place..... They did the credit check in a day.

I found it was easier actually. I rented a house with no problem, just paid the deposit. But I tried to rent an apt. in a complex and they would NOT rent to me because I'd filed bankruptcy regardless of how much I made or a co signer or anything. I found the last house I rented by searching online but you can also look in the newspaper or check with realtors that do property management.

I'm going to be doing the same thing come November. I've been in this unit for six years by the time November comes around... and prior to that I was in another unit for two years... I just want a place that is tiled (or similiar flooring - only carpet in the bedrooms if possible), has some sort of back/front yard space (so I can have the cats do their "business" out there and only have them use the kitty litter during the night), a dlug (as I have a car and moped motorcycle I need to fit in a garage not to mention extra storage space), unfurnished (as I have my own furniture)... everything else is negotiable (as such).

The end of October is going to be a hectic time for me with Indy, my birthday and then the Melb. cup (first week of November) before wanting to move out (i'm aiming for the second week of November to move out).............. so I wish you the best of luck with it.

DLUG - Double Lock Up Garage (Australian real estate)

In case I wasn't the only one who didn't know what the hell that meant.

And, why "double lock up"? High crime rates?
"He will come in one of the pre-chosen forms. During the rectification of the Vuldrini, the traveler came as a large and moving Torg! Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!"

^^^ "Double" modifies "garage," not "lock-up." As in, it's a double garage, big enough for two cars, and it locks up. Instead of a dlug, some have a slug (single garage). It took me awhile to figure out that stuff when I moved to Australia, too!

As for renting a house, why not buy one instead and build some equity?

You can also drive through neighborhoods in which you'd like to live and find houses that way too.

craigslist, baby! That's how I found my apartment and my friends found their houses for rent. They had no problems renting a house, worked as easy as an APT.

My friends tell me that Craigslist is the way to go. I'm looking for a townhouse/house myself. I've just started out, so I haven't really checked out anything I've seen.

I've got lots of leads though...

It's just terms used over here for garages as all garages lock up basically. Just an Australian-ism

I personally want one +CP investment property "under my belt" before I even consider buying a home. Plus it is still rather easier for me to rent at the moment than to have a mortgage...

I'll give craigslist a go as well... they have one for Brisbane (which basically translates into Queensland).

My man and I rent a house. In most cases, when u rent a house, you have to pay utilities and a lot of apartments cover SOME of the utilities. And also, you have to keep up your yard with a house. But i prefer renting a house over an apartment. don't have to worry about noisy neighbors as much and it's great to have a back yard! We just drove around looking for a house with a fenced-in backyard for our dog and found a great house.

im kinda nervous about renting from a single person rather then a leasing office. im scared of getting some nosy landlord that will like come in my house or something. has that ever happened to 1 of yall? are landlords allowed to come in your house while ur not home?

I think that's it. I'm not sure, I only pay the water and my bf pays the rest.

Oh that has always been on my mind and freaked me out! Landlords do have keys to your house. I always worry that if he knew I was a dancer he might pull some crap like that. Just paranoid. But they ARE supposed go give you notice if they are going to come to your house. Remember that.

oh and about buying a home instead of renting:
i dont think im ready for that type of commitment. i want to have my permanent career before i buy a house, and also me and my boyfriend are planning on waiting to buy a house when BOTH of us are financially ready, because we plan on getting married and everything in the future so we want it 50/50. id rather just rent one for now. thanx for the suggestions ladies, i think im gonna try craiglist!
