Default Hair DISASTER: can anyone recommend salon in the midwest? (Indy, Chi, Cincy, L'ville)

Just another one of those threads. I'm smart enough not to try to fix it myself, but here's the problem: I got it done at a beauty school. The girl is not bad, I think it was just one of those things. Lightening hair can be a mystery for even pros. You never know how it is going to turn out. But do I go back to her to have it fixed or get thee to an amazing and amazingly expensive salon?

I'm sure her instructors would be the ones to do it. Maybe they'd be just as good as a good colorist...?

God, I feel so awful. I won't be able to work until it's fixed. You guys know how it is.

I would go to a professional, but if you call and tell them how unhappy you are, you might get an instructor to fix it for free. Just remember, you get what you pay for. I'm recovering from a beauty-school botch job myself, but it was just a bad trim. NEVER let unlicensed kids use chemicals on your hair! They have wigs and dummies for that.

Wow, are bad haircuts a summer epidemic? I stupidly got a cheap trim job & now my hair looks awful. The only plus is less hair to wrangle with while I'm busy moving.
This might make you laugh but the best highlight & haircut I ever got was from a woman who apparently had good hairdressing in her genetic makeup- her mom, grandma & auntie were hairstylists.
*I recommend* using word of mouth to find a hairstylist- I was trying to get my sister's stylist but she was so booked I couldn't get in. Now I have SpikyHalo Hair. Waaah.

Ugh. I just woke up. I am so depressed I slept for 15 hours.

    Here's what happened:

I'm a dark, dirty blonde or light brown naturally. I wanted to go lighter, brighter bonde, so about 6 months ago I had some oxidative color highlights put into virgin bra-length hair. The next chick I went to for a touch up used bleach to highlight my hair, which I did NOT want. Finally, I realized that what I wanted was more dramatic than just some highlights. I wanted to go very blonde, but I didn't want to use bleach for fear of drying out and ruining my hair. So on Thursday, the student used a high lift color. When her instructor came over to check out the finished, blown out job she had this awful look on her face. She said, "What did you use?" She told her. Apparently that's what the instructor would have recommended. The instructor goes, "And this is all it lifted to?" The virgin roots were orange. TO complicate matters, I also had her put in some dark brown streaks randomly, to give it a little edge. After one washing those had already faded to red/orange.

By that time I had literally been there for 5 hours and I was feeling sick and just wanted to go home. So I said, "Looks great." and took off.

But my hair is orange. Apparently hair my color needs bleach to go that light. The part of my hair that had been bleached looks pretty much fine. But the roots are all virgin and all ORANGE. I really don't know what to do. TO save money I thought about getting a RUSK (professional) color correcting kit, stripping this color out myself and then going to a reputable salon for color correction.

Thoughts? And thanks for your interest. This is really getting me down and I literally have no one around to help me out right now. I was getting my hair done so I could motivate myself to go back to work after a recent fiasco. Now there is no way I can go. And I Don't have the money to fix my freaking hair because I can't work. Grrrrr...

Don't do anything yourself, go to a salon and explain to them what has been done and what has been used. Did you tell ms. beauty student about the history of your hair? A lot of times that is the biggest problem, the history of what has been used on the hair is not asked by the person working on your hair.

I think "saving more money" is pretty much the last thing you should do after all of that! Go to a real salon, and save the receipt so you can write it off on your taxes next year if that'll make you feel better about the cost.

Yep, babe, you need a colorist. Not just any stylist - you need a colorist, someone who specializes in this sort of thing. Fixing a bad job involving chemicals and bleach is a job for a real pro; anyone else is just going to make it worse (and you risk frying your hair and losing all your length, which you REALLY don't want).

I just got out of cosmetology school and I've never messed up a color service. Yes, you do take a chance when you get any service from a student, but not all of us are hopeless before we get a license.

Well, I go to Trio Salon, they have 3 stores, 2 in shit-cago, 1 in Evanston. triosalon.com. Philip, 1 of the owners, is a master colorist, although anyone there would be good. I have been going there on & off, for over 10 yrs. The stylists there either do color or cuts exclusively. I had been going to a different regular salon for a year, & happened to go on a day when they were "training" someone. She was working alongside of my regular colorist, & for 2 yrs. & over a foot of hair cut off, I'm still not back to where it was completely when they fried it. Trio has done color repair work on my hair b/4 (when another salon messed it up). I mosty go for haircuts now, since I do my own color touch ups

I know a girl here in town and she's very good with color. She is a recent beauty school graduate, but she knows her shit. If you want me to put you in contact with her shoot me a PM and I will give you her info. She's the only person I let touch my hair.
