In my own way, absolutely. The deeper you care for others, and kinder you are, the better an aura you develop. Others with positive karma will react to you and you will both care for, protect, and be kind to each other.

I don't know how bad karma works and frankly don't care.

I have never actually looked the word up, its just one of those words that I learned from "context clues". That being said, yes, I do believe in it. I was raised Christian, and still am, so I guess I use the word "karma" sometimes as an easier explanation, for what I really believe when it comes to "paying the piper", or being blessed for good deeds etc.

Karma isn't an eye for an eye type of deal. Karma is about reaping what you sow- in essence, the energy you put out to the world is what you receive in return.

Chances are, if you're an ass, you also don't have the ability to maintain good friends and moral support from others. You put out bad energy, you won't attract good energy. So, it's not about, "she fired someone without a good cause so she's going to get fired soon." People often do attract people that are synergystically similar- hence the nice girl with no self-esteem attracting parasites. People assume because the girl is "nice," she should have good karma. Well, maybe she's able to put out positive energy when finding friends, but not with finding partners. Her karma is then the negativity she puts out based on her low self esteem when she's looking for partners (while her self esteem for one reason or another doesn't affect her much when she's looking for friends). The parasite's karma is the fact that he's unable to appreciate the goodness in people and not build positive relationships with women, although he may be able to bond very well with men. Karma isn't about the nice girl finding her prince charming and the parasite getting his ass beat down in an alley (although if he does, it's certainly part of the bad energy that he puts out). Karma is not simply about "being good" or "being nice." People can act nicely and be putting out bad energy.

Nasty human beings may not look like they suffer, but I have never met a really shitty human being that didn't. Really, they may not suffer in the way *you* want them to,* which has nothing to do with karma, but they do. They have a really hard time with having real and positive relationships. They may have party buddies, or nobody at all... so just because you don't see them suffering, nasty people often suffer from shitty self-esteem, lack of support in private life, loneliness, not being able to appreciate people, and their negative/pathetic mental state exudes and makes them act like shit. I have worked with incredibly successful people that are incredibly cold- and not one of thm, despite their success and wealth, had a great private life, especially when you get to know them and their lives. They may *look* like they're having a blast, but I have not met one that have. also, human beings are individuals- and just because one person is not nice to another does not mean she's a bitch to everyone. Karma works in large and small ways-when you dislike someone for any reason, then you're putting out bad energy towards that person- and chances of them reciprocating with positive energy is little to none. Obviously, if you dislike (and actively pick on) more people than like people (rather than being able to ignore people and remain neutral), the more negative enrgy you put out, which, in the end, cannot benefit you.

The problem is that people are a mix- none of us are wonderful to every person we meet. We all have a grudge or dislike someone that has crossed path in our lives- some for good reason, some for no reason at all. The key is the general energy we put out to the world- not whether we're nice to every person we come across. also, people don't think karma exists, because people aren't "punished" in the way they see fit. Karma doesn't work to please anyone- it's simply receiving what you give out to the world. Whenever I really think about things in that respect, it makes sense, and I do see karma at work. People and religions often start including your past lives into karma, but I like to focus on the karma that I can control- which is the energy I put out, and energy I'm receptive to. You can only receive the result of what you put out.

Hey, if I'm not making sense, it's because this is a late night rambling post for me.

I definitely believe in karma, case in point:

A few months ago my car was in the shop getting fixed, and I had to call a cab to get to work. Cab driver was 45 minutes late, and once he found out where I was going he proceded to make comments like : oooh will you get naked for me? give me a private show? how much money do you make? When I finally made it to the club, I totally was ready to call the cab company and turn his ass in, but I decided not to and tipped him 5 bucks. On my first round on stage I had a guy walk up, drop a hundred bucks in ones on my stage, and walk off.

I use the word colloquially too, but I confess I have not studied it enough to understand its true and original meaning. It's been bandied about so casually, I don't believe many people are investigating the deeper aspects of it.

Oh yes. There is a Karma Fairy, and she is a bitch. She beat the shit out of the tooth fairy when I lied about having lost a tooth and then got one knocked out in a fight the next day. (Yes, I was a little girl who got in fistfights. I told you I'm a closet dyke.)

    Warning Long Emotional Uninformed Rant

Thanks for the responses. I reason I ask this question is because something terrible happened to a good friend of mine. He was always their to help anyone out. He was the guy you see stopping to help someone on the side of the road to fix a flat tire even if he is running late. In his spare time he was a youth mentor. I could go on and on about what he has done for other. I never knew anyone that did not like him. He had started to make a good life for himself and is planning to get married in August.

A couple months ago he was in an apt of a teen he mentors he heard screams coming from the parking lot. A man was trying to force a women into his apt, my friend tried to help her out but rec'd a bullet to his head. He is still alive and doing better than anyone would have guessed, but he will probabaly never walk or talk again. This has made me do a lot of thinking. The more I think about it seems more like the best people have the worst things happen to them. When a drunk driver gets in a bad accident it always seems he walks away, but the innocents in the other car get hurt or worse. When someone dies too young it always seem be someone with a lot to offer. I don't know I probably just don't hear too much about the people that die in gang or drug related murders. So I don't know.

I don't know if I really 'believe' in karma, as I don't really believe in anything as a total explanation of events... but anyway, karma, as I understand it, is not as simple as people think... you cant seperate the concept of karma from the concept of reincarnation , your karma may be the result of something you did in some other life... actually since Im a bit of a mystic, I think it's possible it's not even linear timewise, you might be paying for something you haven't even done yet

Im so sorry about what happend to your friend, witt

I have a friend that I stay with out at work and we went to a store to buy her some new work clothes and the girl forgot to ring up one of the items and said it was 14 bucks. My friend went to pay it and I said for all of that and my friend was pissed at me for about 30 min. When we got to work she put in 10 dollars in a slot and won 580.00 then went out to a casino that night and won 3700.00.

Ya, it was this last weekend and she is convinced in karma now... haha

    Witt,
A friend of mine lost her fiancee over 5 bucks in his wallet (the guy shot the fiancee point blank in the head), and they never found the perp. Another friend, a lovely woman, was raped and beaten. I was almost sexually assaulted by a drunk/high stranger. People will find some answer or comfort in the fact that it's karma, and others will be driven nuts by thinking about the concept of karma as it applies to that particular situation. I'm the latter. Horrible things happen all the time, and it happens to people that are trusting and helpful, not just vile people. I don't believe in fate per se- some things are meant to happen, but some things are just really awful coincidences.

I'm an atheist/buddhist- I focus on the philosophical parts of buddhism, but I don't like to dwell on the past, including past lives, because there's nothing you can do to change your past life (if reincarnation exists). You have to focus on the things you can do something about, and keep trooping forward. When horrible things happen to me or my loved ones, I generally just focus on moving forward, doing best to fix/prevent the problem, learn from what happened if possible, etc. I focus on being productive. Sometimes there is no satisfactory answer to the question "why." It's the wretched condition of this floating rock.

I'm sorry about your friend witt.

My final conclusion is that some major events in our lives have to do with our permanent soul, not the person/body we live in in this life. In the past 6 years I have had many bizarre events prove to me that life is much more than what we see in front of us. In a long way, I'm saying "karma" goes along with all the other things that make up existence.

I believe in Karma! A lot of the time, people get what they asked for because they crossed someone who has a lot of friends and allies. We often call this Karma, but strictly speaking that's not Karma.

At any rate, people do often get back what they give out, whether it's intentional (friends sticking up for friends) or accidental (true Karma??).

I am also one of those who believes in Karma, although it would be difficult to provide an explanation as to my exact beliefs, which undergo a metamorphosis every several months. One way I sometimes look upon it is from the late Warren Zevon's song, "Prison Grove"

    http://lyrics.duble.com/lyrics/W/warren-zevon-lyrics/warren-zevon-prison-grove-lyrics.htm

wherein my own interpretation of the line, "Looking down on Prison Grove," is "Prison Grove" being Planet Earth, wherein your "soul"(or whatever you wish to call it) is trapped for a time in a physical incarnationI(and also the line, "when they walk me down in a mortal lock"). He wrote this song when he knew he was dying from inoperable lung cancer, so that influences how I personally interpret his lyrics. The last few lines of the song go

" Some folks have to die too hard
Some folks have to cry too hard
Take one last look at the prison yard
    Goodbye Prison Grove
Shine on all these broken lives
    Shine on
    Shine the light on me"

I believe in karma - but it doesn't work like an eye for an eye although sometimes it does. There is a much bigger picture and not everything in life thats good or bad nessesarilly relates to karma but to learning or experiencies whether they be related directly to the person or just others around them or even this lifetime. I hope that makes a bit of sense. Just my 2 cents anyway...
I am really sorry about what happened to your friend! It's truely horrible! I hope he continues to make a good recovery and prooves everyone wrong by walking!

I'm truly sorry about your friend. I know the pain created by this incident is a tough burden not only on him but on all his family and friends. It's deserving of having several good cries over.

Obviously, the answer to this question of spiritual belief is one only you can formulate for yourself. But some people don't look at karma as the informal definition that's frequently used in pop culture, which is "what goes around comes around." For the believers of a more complex construction of karma, it's not seen strictly as a reward for doing good deeds and punishment for bad. That's an oversimplification of the concept. Rather, karma is the process of advancing the development of your soul, or what your soul needs to learn in this lifetime in order to advance. Belief in reincarnation typically accompanies belief in karma. Your friend obviously was willing to put his own life on the line for what he believed in, helping others. That's a lesson he was learning, with all of its consequences, both good and bad. His karma or "reward" is the progress his soul has made learning this lesson, which will manifest itself in his next life.

The way I understand the original meaning of karma, it was sorta like a spiritual cause-and-effect or conservation of energy religious holding.

The way that 95% of the people use the term "karma" is not in keeping with the original meaning, but that's OK, because a lot of other things are like that, too. Here's a line from Wikipedia that sums up the present use of the term "karma":

The idea of karma was popularized in the Western world .....frequently cast it as a sort of luck associated with virtue: if one does good or spiritually valuable acts, one deserves and can expect good luck; conversely, if one does harmful things, one can expect bad luck or unfortunate happenings. In this conception, karma is affiliated with the Neopagan law of return or Threefold Law, the idea that the beneficial or harmful effects one has on the world will return to oneself.

Now, I have known nice people that have been unfortunate, like Witt's friend, and I'm sorry about that - and I have known some real assholes that have gotten along fine in life and one very well indeed. To my way of thinking, the common use of "karma" is a wish for some cosmic justice, that if you don't do right by others, Fate will eventually bite you in the ass for it.

Maybe it's valid. I dunno. To me, it's unproven and unprovable, but that doesn't mean it's wrong, either. Like so many other spiritual and religious concepts, it's a matter of personal belief.

I think the idea of karma runs thru all traditions.

Christianity you reap what you will sow, Hinduism karma is the effect of your deeds thru out many lifetimes, even science has their idea of karma for every action there is an equal and oppesite reaction. It is a way for us to explain what happens in our lives. I belive in karma but I also believe we are put here to learn lessons. Being a good person doesn't save us from evil, but it helps us cope with it.

I am sorry for your friend who has to deal with this. But because he is a good man he has wonderful friends and family, like you, to help him during this diffcult time. He can draw on the well of his goodness to find the strength to over come this. The love that surrounds him will help him to see beyond this. God offers us not just karma but hope, strength, and love.

People that thrive on doing harm to others have none of these things. Their souls are empty. They thrive on anger and hate. It destroys everything around them even their love. They refuse to see anything outside of it. We dont always see the destruction but it is there. They have no joy because they refuse to see what their actions create. In the end they will destroy themselves.

Karma is what we manifest in our lives that gives birth to what our lives become. We can choose to manifest the positive or choose to manifest negative. Both have their consequences.

Your friends karma will bless him during this time and the man that did this to him his karma will destroy him. Justice is there. This is where faith steps into the picture.

    God works in mysterious ways.

I wish you and your friend showers of blessings of love, strength, and peace during this time.
