A stylist's color formula is her intellectual property. She/he has every right to with hold that property from someone who no longer wishes to use her/his services. Just because it was created for you does not mean it belongs to you. A stylist has every right to keep her fomulas and techniques to her/hisself.

they should at least have to tell you what's in it if you break out in hives or lesions or something, though! otherwise, how will you know what went wrong?

We're talking about color mixing, not ingredients in the color product. If I had a client who decided to stop using my services because she decided she could do it herself, I have the right to keep my intellectual property.

However, if I had a client who broke out in lesions, I'd be more wooried about a law suit than giving up my color formulations!

Angry Colorists can hold you hostage!!!

Did you guys know that colorists in some states can refuse to give you the formula they create for your hair? I just found out in NJ they had to pass a law to force them to hand over the formula when you leave them for another colorist. Rude!

I actually think that is a legitimate decision. Why should they have to share the creation of their intellect and creativity with their competitors, exactly?

It's like any recipe. Chef's aren't forced to give secret spice mixtures, why should colorists? Then anyone could use their recipe (and hard work) by whipping up the right formula.

I dunno, you gals may be right, but it sounds shitty to me. Reminds me of how you get a contact exam, and they don't wanna give you your prescription!!! I had to get "gangsta" to get my freakin script released to me, so I could order my lenses elsewhere!!!!

I would agree in that context, because the service they are meant to be providing you is to examine your eyes and tell you what is wrong with them, not provide the lenses. There is no development there, you know? But, like I had a friend who made perfume, and it would be completely unfair if she had to give up her "recipes" so that her clients could go elsewhere to get them cheaper or make it themselves. If the colour is her creation (or his) it seems like she ought to have a right to keep it to herself.

if a colorist was so bitchy that after years of taking my money she wouldnt tell me my color formula i wouldnt go back to her anyways.

the colorist is gonna lose either way if the client is leaving, why not be nice about it.

If a client decides to leave because she's found a stylist who will charge less or thinks she can mix and apply her own color, then why would I feel obligated to give her my color recipe? Stylists pay a lot of money and time investing in thier skills and shouldn't have to give someone thier creation just because a client wants to save a buck. I see nothing bitchy about not wanting to give your secrets away to your competition.

Of course, they're always exceptions to the rule. People move and finances can ruin. Bottom line, it is intellectual property and, as with any property, can be given or with held as the owner sees fit. If you think that you may want your color formulation, it's best to ask your stylist if that's something he/she is willing to give to you before you decide to continue getting services from him/her.

I agree that the formula is the stylist property. If a client asks about it because they are afraid of allergies then ask them if they have any. Some people might just use it to try and figure out the formula.

Years ago I told my stylist that I was having trouble coming up with the money to pay for my monthy color touch-ups. She gave me the formula so I could do the touch-ups at home. I still go to her for highlights and a haircut a few times a year, and always make sure to tip her very well!

Instead of paying $50+ every month for root touch-ups, I now only spend $5 each month. So I am VERY thankful that she shared her secret formula with me! Nobody ever guesses that I do my own hair color.
